How do I put a movie on my site with iWeb?

(This is reposted here at Alancito's suggestion. Are there some iWeb '08 tricks which will allow me to do this...?)
_______________

I'm trying to have a "before and after movie" on my site. (It's a simple graphic made with AppleWorks Draw, showing the mess before using our service ... and then the solution afterwards.)

I want visitors to my site to see the Before image for about 3 seconds, followed by the After image for another three seconds. And I want this to cycle this way continuously ... and automatically.

I'm using iWeb 1.1.2. (Oh! And the reason I use a Mac is I am averse to technical stuff; I just want it to WORK.)

Alancito helped me with this over at <http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9513268#9513268>, but it seems I may need to upgrade to '08.

Yes? No? Other suggestions?

Okay, through two visits to the local Genius Bar (and compatibility problems among Tiger, iWeb, QuickTime and Apple Works).

<Days pass...>

I just upgraded to iWeb '08.

I published to a folder.

I logged-in to my Registrar/Host's site and accessed their FTP Client "net2ftp" and followed their steps. When I got to "Choosing a file" to Upload, I click the iWeb folder for my site and ...

a) There's an "index.html" file and a folder, "Site_2." (So far, so good....)
b) I select the Index file. The FTP Client provides another field for the next file(s). "Cool."
c) I click the folder "Site_2" and ... there's a 2nd file in that folder called "index.html" (I know I took the Short Bus to school but I'm pretty sure I cannot tell the FTP Client I have TWO index.html files for it to upload.

I'm stumped. What now?

I went ahead and loaded all the files. My site now at least has something on it, but it isn't formatted as it looks on iWeb. (Fonts are not right and the movie covers the text.

Having something ugly is better than "Forbidden You do not have permission to access this server" ... which is what you saw until a few minutes ago.

BTW, my site is WeMeanBusiness.biz if you want to take a look.

You might try the following:

1 - select the movie and use the File->Cut menu.
2 - go to the place in the text box where you'd like the movie to appear, put the cursor in it so you're ready to type and use the File->Paste menu option. You can then select the movie, go to the Inspector/Text/Wrap pane and set either right or left text wrap around the movie. That should get you around the movie over text issue.

Looking at the activity window (use the Window->Activity menu) for you site indicates that there are several files that did not get uploaded to the server, most are java files that control the navbar and widgets.

Check your ftp client and make sure you're uploading ALL of the files for the site.

There is no "Cut" in the File menu. (I'm on iWeb '08.)

The rest of what you suggested made great sense. (I had several Text Boxes which were empty ... from expecting a Text Box to work like PowerPoint, getting frustrated, trying again. I deleted them -- which considerably reduced the number of files to upload.) The wrapping around the movie sure looked great on the iWeb page....

Yes. I uploaded all the files. I checked twice.

The "result" is even worse than two hours ago.

Grrr! I have another app't at the local G Bar tomorrow.

(Did I mention I use a Mac because I just wanna click it and make it happen? This stuff reminds me of "asking someone what time it is ... and being told how to build a watch!")

Progress.... I can't believe I'm still messing with this, but I'm closer than ever.

My dilemma now is ... do I still go with a QT movie ... or do I use some Flash utility?

QT looks great, can run automatically, and runs in a loop. BUT ... most of my Win platform visitors are telling me they see only a black square; no movie. (Only some of them are being prompted to download the QT "thing".)

(Back to the Genius Bar for a Workshop....)
A Creative suggested I use Vimeo for Flash, instead of QT. Done ... but the movie doesn't size quite right and I don't know how to make it Auto & Loop.

Suggestions for ways to clean up Vimeo movie? Or suggest a better Flash utility?

You can try using QT in an iFrame or use Video2SWF to convert it.

You'll see links to more comparisons at the bottom of the above page.

Video2SWF gives you a number of player options or "None"!
Its also easy to set the movie to autoplay and return to the start or loop. You can set a player with no control bar to start with a mouse click too.

I'm having trouble adding a video to my website using iWeb iSight Movie widget.

Here's what I do:
1) click and drag the iSight Movie widget to my page in iWeb
2) record a video
3) save and publish and allow iWeb to complete the upload
4) VIEW CHANGES ON MY WEB SITE.... HERE'S THE PROBLEM...

See my website. Notice the Quicktime logo with a "?" over it.

How do I solve this problem? What am I doing incorrectly?

Thanks,
Troy

Troy ~ Welcome to the discussions, but what you're doing is known as a Threadjack — To wrongly post a dissimilar issue in an existing discussion, distracting from the true focus of the discussion. If your issue has any significant difference from a similar topic, then you're probably better off posting a new topic to focus attention on your particular issue. See here:

You're also posting in the wrong forum — if you're using iWeb iSight Movie widget, you're on iWeb '09 and this is iWeb '08 forum. The iWeb '09 forum is here:

Roddy, your ideas "look" helpful. Thanks.

I am frustrated that so many "solutions" involve buying yet another application. Are there any people who do small -- really small -- projects like this as a service to those of us who'd rather not "build a watch when all we really want to know is the time?"

I'm being told the Vimeo Flash solution I've implemented at this point works for 6 of 7 Win platform friends. It is progress....

Hello Kaptain Karl,

Please correct me if I got it wrong :

You want to show an image for x seconds and then have it replaced with a 2nd image for x seconds and then have it all start over again (loop) ?

If so, have you tried to make an animated GIF ? It's an old format that works on all browsers, is very easy to make and costs nothing (except your time).

Feel free to ask about making an animated GIF when needed.

Kind regards,
Leo

PS: If you like the animated GIF solution... you did not need to upgrade iWeb.
