SMC Update killed my computer!!

I just downloaded and installed the smc update from automatic updates. However, when the computer restarted it remained with a blank screen for 20 minutes. I tried to restart it but now the bottom power light under the track pad lights for a second and nothing happens. The computer seems dead now. I have everything disconnected and tried resetting the SMC, but to no avail.

Please help!

I applied the SMC update and I am seeing a problem with my AirPort card. I get to the internet only to some sites. Facebook and twitter are dead to me, I can only get to google via the IP number.

More likely to be a problem with the DNS server on your internet connection, than anything relating to the firmware update. Rebooting as probably caused you to switch to a different DNS server and that is causing you issues. You can try setting to a public DNS server in your network control to see if that resolves the issue. Google "Public DNS" - I think opendns.org is one such service.

I don't think that we can safely say that "this is not a firmware problem", as the "this" doesn't appear to be the same thing for all people.

I'm beginning to suspect that this update is triggering a number ill effects that may be due to errors in the SMC, errors in the updating process, interactions with unaccounted for conditions or computer states, or from secondary effects caused by a combination of the above.

I know that my internal video problems are not based on the os. The machine will boot and work on an external display, no matter which disk or OS version I boot from.

The machine will NOT boot and keep the display working for more than a few seconds when using ONLY the internal display no matter which disk or OS I boot from.

It's almost like the machine is stuck in some weird sudo-clamshell mode, even when there is no external display connected or USB device attached.

It may be that some non-PRAM stored setting got corrupted that controls the video sleep subsystem, or the system that determines whether the lid is closed, etc... My machine was running in dual monitor mode with a mouse attached when the update was applied- perhaps that and some other condition triggered some unforeseen bug, or exacerbated an existing issue...

Or it may be that something about the update process or SMC firmware caused the well known nVidea video hardware bug to manifest by allowing something in the nVideo card to momentarily overheat.

It could be these or a lot of things, or possibly some other issue that just happened to rear it's head at the exact moment the computer rebooted after applying the SMC update.

I have an appointment Thursday at the genius bar- until then I'm on external display mode only. I'll let you all know if I find out anything new...

I found this discussion after my MBP 15" 2.4GHz Santa Rosa died today - on power up the sleep light comes on dimly but with constant brightness, as if frozen part way through the animation, there is a brief click of disk activity then nothing else happens. The screen remains black.

I installed the SMC 1.3 update this morning and although it rebooted ok directly afterwards, the first time I put it to sleep it failed to wake up again. It has been inoperable since.

While I'm glad the update worked for you, there seem to be enough laptops that failed right after applying it to make it extremely unlikely to be a coincidence.

I believe that Apple is now aware of this issue. As I posted earlier, I took my MBP in for repair earlier today. The immediate reaction of the tech was that he was already aware of this issue, and he took the machine in for repair. The repair was free of charge even though my MBP is out of standard warranty and will take 5 to 7 business days.

It seems that there are a wide variety of issues arising from this update. Some have been very severe - completely dead machines - but in most cases the machine still boots but has various issues with the graphics card - typically resulting in a black internal LCD screen. Typical remediation techniques such as resetting the SMC or zapping PRAM have no effect.

I would recommend that where possible everyone take their machine to their local store for repair.

Update to my own issue - I was able to successfully use a different secondary monitor with my system. So the first secondary monitor is either problematic, or this update has decreased external monitor compatibility (the monitor I'm referring to is a Compaq TFT5030 - it's a bit old, and it's the only monitor I've ever encountered that has a "boot screen" of its own).

I did the SMC update on my MacBook Pro 2.4 Santa Rosa mid 2007 and it messed up my battery status and operation!
My MBP no longer access the sleep/hibernate when the battery runs out, it just turns off, suddenly.
Another strange behavior is that now, after I did a full recharge of the battery, the coconutBattery accuses a load of 65336 mAh (!!!), when the maximum load should be 5500 mAh.
The battery has 116 cycles and was 86% of health, never had any problems.

Is there any way to undo the update or something of the sort?

Called both Apple hotline and local technical assistance today. No one knows about it, at least here in Brazil. I guess replacing logic board free of charge, even when the warranty ran out, is the standard procedure for MBP with Nvidia Geforce problems.
Still waiting for Apple to came out and say: "Hey folks, my bad"
I think the best we can do is to fill every bug report, tweet, blog and yell about it.

OK, now my battery does not recharge.

My MBP does not recognize that the battery is discharged – the status shows 100% all the time and the MagSafe light is green.
Thanks, SMC update.
Someone here has the same problem?

DRmbp,
the logic board of my MBP was replaced by 8600GT recall. It happened thus: One day the notebook slept, and woke no more...
I cannot believe that this update will bring me more problems with the logic board, is unacceptable! Regarding the battery, everything is normal with its?
Someone here is having the same problem as me?

I just found other topics on the forum reporting problems similar to this and I realized that in some cases are before the SMC update. Maybe it was just a coincidence in my case.
And there am I in search of another Recall, this time for the battery... Will it work?

*A tip for everybody: in doubt buy AppleCare. Sad but true...

Yeah, I called Apple in the US via Skype and they knew nothing of it, and since my repair was done in Europe I had to call their offices in Cork, Ireland. They knew nothing there either. Or at least weren't admitting it. I didn't really expect them to really.

BUT, they did say they would look into it for me. Which, is all that I can ask at this point.

Also, I would suggest that yelling at the customer service people should get you no where. Polite but firm is almost always the best route.

You're right. When I said "yell about it" I meant to pass on the information about what happened on our blogs, twitters and stuff like that so the pressure and awareness becames bigger and Apple eventually comes out as they did with the Nvidia thing. Not at costumer service.

Anybody had their boards changed after this and now it´s all working fine?
