SMC Update killed my computer!!

I just downloaded and installed the smc update from automatic updates. However, when the computer restarted it remained with a blank screen for 20 minutes. I tried to restart it but now the bottom power light under the track pad lights for a second and nothing happens. The computer seems dead now. I have everything disconnected and tried resetting the SMC, but to no avail.

Please help!

Before I got ready to leave work to head to the Apple store today, I ran the updates for the Airport Basestation and QuickTime and after reboot my LCD came back to life! Hoping that it triggered something that corrected the issue I unplugged the external monitor- it kept working!

But, alas, when I closed the lid it would not sleep. I had to shut down to head to the Apple Store, and when I booted up the issue was there again.

The Genius eventually hooked it to a repair drive and ran some tests which he had to read on another computer (the results are saved on the drive) as the screen didn't stay on long enough for him to read.

The GPU test failed so my MBP will get a new board. Unfortunately they're back ordered so I'll be on external monitor mode for awhile. They can fix it at the store but it may take 1-3 days once the parts in and I drop it off.

The genius, who seemed to be quite competent and experience, had never heard of the problem and was as puzzled by the relation to the SMC update and a video failure as we all are. I'm leaning towards some glitch in the update caused an overheating situation for a GPU that was close to failing, which that batch of nVideo cards seem to be prone to do. Who knows...

I have the same problem as Mendes, only the batterie gives 0%.
Most of the time the charger's light is green or out.
The charger can't load.

Well this is my little story about the SMC firmware 1.3 update. I have a late 07 MBP that was running like a swiss clock before the update. After it, the computer would not come out of sleep. I turned it of, try to turn it on, got to the grey screen and that's it! Nothing else. The wheel kept spinning and spinning. After resetting NVRAM/NPRAM, i went to the nearest apple store to have someone take a look at it. He had no clue what was going on and ask to either leave the computer with him for the night or bring it back the next day. When I got home, I booted from an external hard drive that had a copy of OS X, got access to my MBP HDD saved all my files, home folder, system library, user library etc. After formating the drive, I was able to reinstall OS X and manually reinstall all of my files and settings. I still don't know what went wrong with the SMC firmware, but I got my MBP working again. Hope it does helps!

Very interesting and I'll give it a try.
As I wrote before, I could also see the HDD when starting my MBP from the iMac through Firewire connection. And I also thought of formatting the disk and reinstall OSX and everything else. But I thought the problem is not in the disk and that this reformatting will only work in the HDD not in the firmware. So, I haven't done it. I might be wrong as I do not really understand what is the firmware.
It might be good to hear some expert's oppinion in this forum, if this si really a good strategy. Reformatting the HDD and reinstall OSX might reprogram the firmware and bring the computer back to life? Please help.

Dmph:
I am not so sure that reformatting and replace and reinstall will change the Firmware 1.3!
Because my MBP won't go sleeping I used the tip from Vincent, just above in this topic:
http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20090518095106449
and voila: problem disappeared.
My MBP sleeps like a princes.(and awake as a Leopard :<))

What did I do?
Went to settings>network>ethernet and disabeld this function.
Used aply to save this change and restarted the MBP!
Thanks Vincent!

Hello,

Sorry to hear about your problems with this update. Well, over here the update ran very well and no problems etc. etc. However, my battery seems to be behaving oddly. First, coconut battery tells me that I have completed 148 cycles and my current battery capacity is 90%, comes to about 5058 mAh. After the update, spotlight seemed to index faster than before and clicking on the battery icon shows tells me that there's 4 hours and 48 minutes of battery life left, this with Wifi on and the display brightness set to Full. A few seconds later the reported battery life was 3 hours 50 minutes. It then jumps back to 4 hours 40 minutes and so on (all this with the stainless web browser, Mail.app and Quicksilver working. Hibernate etc works fine.

Another gripe with the battery is that since I pulled the cord out after the update, I coconutBattery informs me that my current battery capacity reduced from 90% to 87%. All this in the last 5 - 6 minutes ? Anyone else noticed this behavior?

I also attempted to enable 4 finger gesture support for my penryn MBP using this technique: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=701959 . The first time I restarted nothing happened and I remember restarting afterwards as well but nothing happened then (trackpad was fine but 4 finger gesture wouldn't work). After this update I notice that 4 finger gestures do work on my MBP. Something to do with the update or pure coincidence?

Thanks,
Shriphani Palakodety

Enough of all the fuss here. Here is simple solution:

1. Get hold of Leopard installation disk.
2. Do Archive and Restore installation

Having said that please note the following:

1. SMC update can be easily reverted back
2. I am using old SMC firmware now 1.18f4

My system was also killed by the latest SMC firmware udate.
