SMC Update killed my computer!!

I just downloaded and installed the smc update from automatic updates. However, when the computer restarted it remained with a blank screen for 20 minutes. I tried to restart it but now the bottom power light under the track pad lights for a second and nothing happens. The computer seems dead now. I have everything disconnected and tried resetting the SMC, but to no avail.

Please help!

Well, I got off the phone with customer relations a few hours ago. The end result wasn't good... for me anyway. Because I couldn't prove that the SMC update killed my computer, and the repair technician suggested that there was "no way" that it caused my computer to die like it did, that they could not help me out any.

So... £700 flushed down the drain for me. What a waste. I can't say that I wasn't treated with respect and that they people weren't nice, but I really don't think they looked into the problem as much as they could have. I just wish more laptops had the same problem as mine (dying completely), because at least then I could justify that it wasn't just me having the issue. I really feel ripped off, and I wish that I had just bought the stupid Applecare, which always felt like a ripoff anyway. Not anymore I guess. $300 Applecare versus £700 repair bill...

/facepalm

Well, as I've mentioned before I'm one of those. 100% dead. I don't know if that will help you...
I'm starting to believe Apple will try to sweep it under the rug and pretend nothing happened. Even though this is a user forum someone in California is probably reading all this and they probably had a lot of bug reports after the update release.
There are some threads about it but I'd like to see some more public pressure on they on this subject.

In my case the issue turned out to be that the NVidia GPU had failed. I took it to the local Apple Store and they were able to boot off an external drive (still with no display) to run a diagnostic check that determined that the graphics chip was no longer functional. As this is a known problem for the MBPs they are replacing the main board free of charge.

I still find the timing of the failure (within hours of applying the SMC update) suspicious but the failure mode does appear to be in the hardware not the firmware.

I just did an Apple software update and this dialog box came up.

I didn’t know what it was and so I Googled it and came up with some discussion threads on it.

DO NOT INSTALL THIS FIRMWARE UPGRADE.

It has some major issues. See this thread:

I have already downloaded the update but did not see this dialog box until the machine restarted.

I have not clicked the restart button, so it is sitting in my machine awaiting to hear the fix.

After the SMC update, my MBP freezes during sleep mode. The keyboard and trackpad are nonfunctional. Resetting the PMU by pulling the battery with adapter unplugged and pressing the on button did nothing. Any suggested fix for this?

FYI, other updates were done recently and here is the list:

Took it to authorized repair yesterday after waiting for a whole week for Apple to come out. Guess (and hope) they'll replace the board taking it as a consequence of Nvidia problems.
I still think it is absurd for Apple not to take responsibility on this update. It has the same results of a virus to many users. The idea of Apple actually making an extra buck out of this by having people buying new boards or run to applecare because of this update is sick.
