Hard drive seems way too hot!

After the day of regular use the cpu fan was making a whining noise that was bugging me while I watched TV.

The room temp was about 80 F.

The whining fan noise is alittle unusual so I pulled the back off and found that the iMac is a hot running machine everywhere inside particularly the HD.

Temp monitor was showing HD at 55C, which is the max rated operating temp.

My question is, does X Resource Graph get the HD temp from the HD itself or from the little sensor stuck on the end of the HD cage?

what response did you get from Apple regarding the heat issue?

i looked at the new iMac G5s and they seem to monitor everything under the sun. i presuming if Apple have added all the additional sensors for various air temperatures, etc then there is a problem with heat on series II iMacs.

i have "enjoyed" a HDD crash within 4 months of purchasing the iMac and i'm pretty sure it's a heat issue. the SATA drives do seem to run hot and not like it...

Dave, I have to admit that is slick. Where did you get the fan? Fantastic solution that drops HD and cpu temps 10F and its non destructive.

Dadof3, aluminum sheds heat like a duck sheds water.

PS I shut the fan off and the HD temp is at 126.5F and climbing.

What was the before/after SMART disk temperature?

Matevz, I down loaded Temperature Monitor and the after smart disk is 46C or 114.8F. I had the fan on so I don't have the before temp but I would expect it to be around 131F or 55C.

Ed, I believe the non operating temp is environmental which ranges from -40F to 160F. Matevz is worried about SMART Temp which in your case exceeds the max 55C-60C depending upon hard drive.

I have Service coming out to locate and repair the whining noise so maybe in this something will change that will lower the temps.

Edward,
Drives are fitted (by securing with screws) into brackets or cages which are then fitted into computers other than the iMac, hence those four holes.

SMART: 23-62.

Mine in comparison:

CPU: ?-83
HD: 22-53.5
SMART: 23-61.5

Bottom line: match well!
