PowerMac G5 Will Not Sleep

Gah, this is exhausting.

I have my computer set in the Energy Saver preferences to sleep the computer after 10 minutes, the displays after 5. (See screenshots of my current settings here). However, the computer will NOT go to sleep unless I use Finder's >Sleep manually.

I've tried everything here, reset SMU/PRAM/B-B-Q, unplugged all USB devices, erased all sorts of .plist files, and tapped my heels together three times: no dice. Any other ideas?

My insomniac G5 and I thank you very kindly.

I hope you used this version of TechTool. The version that shipped with your Mac can actually hose a 10.5.7 system.

TechTool Deluxe is OK but not robust enough to handle bigger issues.
Try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk and see what it says.
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Utility reports and if DU was able to repair them.

Well, this Archive and Install advice could maybe fix the issue.

I have solved every issue I've ever had, the last ten years, by doing the following;
If Disk Utility can't fix it, you'll need a more robust utility for the repair. I would recommend DiskWarrior. It is the best at directory repairs. It rebuilds then actually replaces your old directory. I feel every Mac owner should have a copy. Make sure you get the disk so you can boot up on it to run repairs. You can also install it on another drive and run it from there to repair this one. DW works faster that way.
I use DW once a month to try and catch errors in my system from getting too far out of hand.
It may not fix this issue for you, but it will fix the next one!

p.s. Here's a rewiew of DiskWarrior 4.

Hi, I think I MAY have solved the issue here some what. Its not perfect but it does what is required more or less. I was running 10.5.7 on a G5 Quad 2.5GB RAM, impossible autosleep, and a few problems with manual sleep occasionally (sometimes would crash, fans very loud). I reinstalled 10.5.6 with the 3 Java updates too. Then altered the powermanagement plist by going

Library>Preferences>SystemConfiguration>com.apple.powermanagement.plist and look for the txt

<key>TTYSPreventSleep</key>
<integer>1</integer>

make sure this integer is set to 0 (disabled) (unless you want TTYS to prevent the system to sleep in which case this will probably not help you - sorry). You will need to change the access permissions of the SystemConfiguration folder and then the com.apple.powermanagement.plist file to allow you to save the change you will make. (Apple + i/get info on file then unlock file and change the admin permissions from read only to read & write), then save. This may be enough to get your system to sleep, although mine sleeps after a few mins after the screen is put to sleep even if the screen and computer are set to sleep at the same time... Better than no autosleep though!

If this does not help fix it I also set the Wake On Clamshell Open integer to 0.

I dont know if this will help you out there and I'm sorry it's so long winded, maybe by the time you've read this apple will have fixed the problem. : )
I recommend experimenting with short intivals before system autosleep (set in System Preferences) and see if it works then extend the time you desire. Also maybe try this before you downgrade to 10.5.6 as there may be no need. Good Luck!

Also I don't recommend altering plist setting unless you feel confident in doing so (the admin access is denied for a reason), please don't blame me if this changes how your system works, I'm only trying to help!

I have the same problem. G5 will not do auto sleep. I was wondering if you solved your sleep problem.

So far I've discovered that a newly create OS 10.5.7 on another HD partition does NOT have the problem. This OS does not have much of my data and applications. Also I have a OS 10.4.11 on another partition which doesn't have the problem. Also a duplicate complete copy of the HD onto another HD DOES have the sleep problem. CONCLUSION: sleep problem is related to software not hardware.

I should add that, when I do a manual sleep it sometimes take four attemps to get the sleep to take. It sleeps then wakes a few seconds later!!

I've done some of these things in effort to fix.
1) turned off file sharing. 2) turned off bluetooth wake. 3) looked at system.log for some helpful message at the time computer is set to sleep. 4) removed all files from HD/library/{LaunchAgents,LaunchDaemons}. 5) Reinstalled OS from original Install disk for Leopard OS 10.5.4 after first trashing ALL of the system folder4 (except bootx). 6) Gone a "Combo" update to 10.5.7.

Next I think I will start trashing application files, on my duplicate system, with hope of discovering something. It's driving me nuts and gone on much too long.

I don't have the solution yet but conclude that there is *bug is OS 10.5.7* which prevents my PowerG5 from doing automatic sleeps.

*Is then someone out there to confirm or deny my conclusion, sleep bug in OS 10.5.7?*

Details: Tested the following systems. Energy saver pane set to defaults then set inactive time to 1 minute before starting tests.

1. OS 10.4.11 installed on a external HD with my applications. Seven successive tests worked OK. No failures.

2. OS 10.5.4 clean install from DVD that came with OS X Leopard. Partition erased before installing. Worked OK 5 time in a row. One failure first time after install?

3. OS 10.5.4 clean install on external HD then updated with Combo OS 10.5.7. None of my software installed. *Failed sleep 5 times in a row*.

I've also done sleep test after unplugging all devices including keyboard and mouse only keeping the monitor plugged in. OS 10.5.7 doesn't sleep.

Scheduled sleeps and power button sleeps do work properly

I agree with CB100. I have a dual 2.7 G5 and after installing 10.5.7 it will not go to sleep. I have tried every solution suggested and I firmly believe it is a problem with 10.5.7. Booting off earlier version works fine. Now display goes to sleep but computer will not sleep automatically. Manual sleep works fine.

Apple, Please fix this problem in your next update.

Here is a update on my sleep problem(s). This may or may not be related. I'm guessing it's unrelated but still a "sleep" problem.

On doing a manual sleep, for the last n months, computer will wake within seconds and I have to manual sleep it again. Sometimes it taks 3-4 times to make sleep it.

So, the other day, I focused on fixing this problem. What I noted.
1) computer woke when I got up from my desk.
2) in morning with computer sleeping all night I sat at my desk and then without touching desk or computer got up from chair and lo and behold the computer woke up!
Same thing after a sleep or several hours it woke up when I sat in chair then got up!
3) My wife got the same results when she got up from chair.
4) it was so bad that I only had to sit in another chair 3-4 feet from all the computer stuff to have the computer wake up.
5) tried removing and changing to other mouse and keyboard. No difference.
6) tried jiggling wires and tapping computer before I got up. Didn't wake on jiggling but did wake when I got up. You figure. What is going on?

WELL; after doing a lot of shuffling of cables plugging into other USB outlets and I don't know what all - the problem went away and I haven't been plauged with it for 3-4 days.

GOOD NEWS: problem went away. BAD NEWS: I don't know why. Can't recreate problem. I can only think that it is a electromagnet problem.

I have the same problem: PowerMac G5 Dual 2.3 10.5.7

After the 10.5.7 combo update (went from 10.5.6) my Mac just will not go to sleep on it's own.... Bah!

Like the original poster, I zapped this, reset that, deleted something else.

I have discovered that if I leave a Data CD Disc in the optical drive, then my Mac sleeps as per normal.

Has anyone else noticed this ?

Hi himac

I find that very interesting to know . I bet thats a bug with the os . It dont sound like a hardware problem but may as well be one too. WOW. Thats very interesting to fine out but a pain in the butt to find the problem with what caused the problem in the first place . Thats very weird to have your cd in the drive and it sleeps fine but take it out and it wont sleep at all . Did you do your update from software update ?.

I hate when something dont work like they intended it to . But you no that its a computer and it can fail for any given reason .Its mechanical in some point of view . DId you consider to do a full restall of the os . You can try to repair permissions with disk utility . I would try that first if not back up your info you need and go from there . You may have to do a full reinstall for the os .Than do the update after that. But I would test you computer after the full install of the os , before the update .

I always do the following:

Manually download the combo update.
Repair permissions.
Verify HDD
Restart
Install OS Update
Restart
Repair Permissions (Just to be sure/safe)

I'm not going to do a full reinstall, because it's a total pain to rebuild everything back to the point where it was before the defecation hit the circulatory oscillator at a great velocity!

I just hope that Apple will sort out what it is about the optical drive being in use that gets my G5 to go nighty night all by it's self!
