PowerMac G5 Will Not Sleep

Gah, this is exhausting.

I have my computer set in the Energy Saver preferences to sleep the computer after 10 minutes, the displays after 5. (See screenshots of my current settings here). However, the computer will NOT go to sleep unless I use Finder's >Sleep manually.

I've tried everything here, reset SMU/PRAM/B-B-Q, unplugged all USB devices, erased all sorts of .plist files, and tapped my heels together three times: no dice. Any other ideas?

My insomniac G5 and I thank you very kindly.

I was having the exact same symptoms as DaSwede. My PMG5 Dual 2.0 would not sleep and every few minutes the disk drive would make a noise as if it was trying to load a disk.

Putting in a blank disk into the G5 resolved the issue. Hopefully Apple reads this thread and fixes the issue in the next update. We have obviously pointed out an issue with 10.5.8

DVD in the drive seems to work for me too, though Ive only tried it once so far. The thing is though that my Mac adds a few minutes to the setting ("sleep when idle for 5 mins" becomes "sleep after aprox 10 minutes") and I have the same problems with scheduled sleep - ie even though I set it to go to sleep at 21.00 it might not go to sleep until 21.15 or sometimes not at all. Might be that a dvd in the drive fixes these issues too, Ill try it out.

Otherwise Im thinking of reinstalling my OS at the same time as I get either a bigger external backup-drive or a bigger internal primary drive. I hope that a reinstallation of the system might fix some odd issues Im having sometimes including these sleep issues.

This "fix" is working for me too. I just installed a Samsung and thought it was the optical
drive that was the problem. It seems like the original Sony drive didn't have this issue but I may
have updated to 10.5.8 about the same time as swapping drives. How does one get Apple to take a
look at this issue? That drive spinning every minute along with the hard drive clicking away
is really irritating.

My G5 just developed this issue and would not sleep (just posted my own question on the board) did most of the things on this thread inclusing putting a disc in the DVD drive.

Anyway I changed the TTYSPreventSleep from 1 to 0 and just tested it and it went to sleep instantly no more fans or delay and as you can see woke up again. I was thinking it was a dying DVD drive but hopefully the TTYSPreventSleep was the issue. BTW What does the TTYSPreventSleep do? I also noticed one for "Wake On Clamshell Open" which is weird since this is a desktop, I changed that to 0 as well.

I have a question, if the DVD drive does need replacing in the future, what is a good model to get?
