Comp won't boot after installing Safari 4

After installing the new safari 4 on my Powermac G5, you have to restart the comp. Help... now I only get a grey screen! safe mode didn't work... what to do?

marco, here's what i did, step by step:

+ print or write the command down on a sheet of paper.
+ start the computer while holding both APPLE & S keys to enter "single user mode".
+ on the black screen, wait till there are no more new lines of text.
+ type *sh /etc/rc*, then hit return to continue in "single user mode"
+ again, wait for the commands to finish, then carefully type the command you printed out, no line breaks here, press return when you are finished.
(i had a few problems finding the right keys, on german keyboards the Y and Z keys are swapped, - becomes / and ß becomes - . . . you have to use the international keyboard layout in this mode)
+ when that's done type exit (and return 😉 to start Mac OS X.

groetjes, -f

PS did all of you use the safari beta before, or does the crash occur while replacing safari 3, too?

Same here - MacBook 10.4.11 - waiaaaaiiting for the login screen.
I did boot in verbose mode and first thought it was a problem with start up items.
Could not get in safe boot mode at all, so I disabled some Start up Item from single user mode.
Did a check with applejack too.
Still no login screen.
Did someone file a bug at Apple?? radar.apple.com
I' am an early updater but such thing did not happen in my 11 years with Apple
Will check upon the Quartz hint above and post later about success

I don't even get that far...I get a "Could not open file 'mach_kernel", Error loading kernel 'mach_kernel' 0xe

this is on a 17" MacBook Pro with 4 GB RAM running OS 10.5.7 with all of the updates installed.

It all started when I tried to install Safari 4.0 and was told that my har drive didn't have permission for the install. I repaired permissions, and now the MBP won't boot. Gonna try a system disk this evening, but I'm not holding out any hope.

@Apple Happy

If you deleted Safari you may not have Safari.framework anymore. In such case the command will not work.
Try to see if the file exists, do:
ls /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Safari.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/Quartz Core.framework/Versions/A/QuartzCore
and check if the output lists the file or gives you "No such file or directory".

You may also try running loginwindow app from command line and see what happens.
In my case it gave me such error:
root@mini:root# /System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app/loginwindow
dyld: Library not loaded: /System/Library/Frameworks/QuartzCore.framework/Versions/A/QuartzCore
Referenced from: /System/Library/Frameworks/AppKit.framework/Versions/C/AppKit
Reason: image not found
Trace/BPT trap

And examining AppKit shows that it depends on QuartzCore:
root@mini:root# otool -L /System/Library/Frameworks/AppKit.framework/Versions/C/AppKit | grep QuartzCore
/System/Library/Frameworks/QuartzCore.framework/Versions/A/QuartzCore (compatibility version 1.2.0, current version 1.4.12)

The only thing you may try is to download Safari 4 installer on different machine, extract its contents, and put at least QuartzCore to /System/Library/Frameworks/QuartzCore.framework/Versions/A/.
This could help you start up normally. You could use usb flash drive to move the file from one machine into another, for example starting from bootable dvd, mounting flash drive through disk utility and using terminal to tranfer the file. Remember that when booting from dvd the paths will differ. You will have to precede the path with something like /Volumes/\[name of the main drive\]/ because the main drive will be mounted under /Volumes.

I think I also had this info about FibreChannel etc, but it didn't matter.

Same situation here, but I have specifically installed Safari 4 on 10.4.11 on macintel and boom!
Since then the Macbook doesn't go to the Login window, it claimed some files were incorrect and after fixing these using the info on this page, Mac OS X is stucked and I cannot access my Desktop.

This Safari 4 Update is the root of the problem or accidentally my hard disk decided to play the fool at the same time.

Lost a day of work, now reinstalling 10.4 and losing more hours.
