After installing the new safari 4 on my Powermac G5, you have to restart the comp. Help... now I only get a grey screen! safe mode didn't work... what to do?

Hi funtoosh,

My iBookG4 won't boot anymore after the safari 4.0 update. I tried the steps you provided for Marco but the computer never lets me write down the command you wrote down. Before I am finished typing it in the screen goes blank. Do you have any other ideas?

My whole iTunes library is on that computer and I would hate to loose it. Thanks goodness everything else is backed up on my new iMac.

Thanks for your help!

Juia

oops, the screen goes blank ... that's weird. i'd try once more?

of course, you can always reinstall OS X -- insert the DVD, boot with the C key held down (C for CD), re-install the system over the existing one with the options for "archive and install" & "keep user settings" checked.

you can also get access to your mp3s by starting the mac with T (for "target mode") held down and then connect your new mac to the old one via firewire. target mode will let you access the mac as if it were an external firewire drive.

hope that helps ,-}

I've tried a few more times. After running through lines of text it stops. Then I start typing the command and before I am done, the screens turns light blue and stays that way. When I reinstall OS X, will that affect applications? Will my iTunes and iPhoto stay the same? I have more than 7000 photos on the computer as well as the mp3s.

Thanks!

We will know when you have done it 🙂
Anyway i would make sure before rebooting after upgrade that the problematic files are in place.

Btw as far as i remember i couldn't revert to safari 3, although i used uninstaller provided by apple. It reverted safari to previous version but my previous one was another 4 beta version. Something was messed up with this betas in my case and maybe it was the reason of all later problems.

Another thing is that if you are going to use the machine on which you manually linked QuartzCore you should do a few more steps there to fully restore QuartzCore.framework, because otherwise other applications complain, for example quicktime.
I did:
cd /System/Library/Frameworks/QuartzCore.framework
ln -s Versions/Current/QuartzCore .
ln -s /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Safari.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/Quartz Core.framework/Versions/A/Resources Versions/A/
ln -s Versions/Current/Resources .

Be careful:
- dots are parts of the commands
- use TAB to complete paths in order to avoid spelling mistakes

your mac really behaves strangely here ...

as for the re-installation: you should be able to keep all your application data, but remember to check both "archive + install" and "keep individual settings" (or sth. in that vein, i re-translated that from german ;~) in your installation options.

hopefully, your safari-related problems will not be kept as well . . .

ʞəʇɹɐq, thanx for keeping us up to date!

i might try and and update my work machine somtime this week-end, but this really does not sound like fun any more. i guess it would be cool by now to get a fix from apple for these problems, wouldn't it?

i think it all started with the update for safari beta 4 which kept coming back in the software updater, although it had already been installed. (this was covered in previous forum discussions.)

i'm just glad i stopped doing mac support jobs ...

Hi, I'm also experiencing this problem, when restarting after installing safari 4 my screen in stuck on the grey screen with the apple. I've tried going into single user mode and putting in the really long comand that was suggested but that didn't do anything. I've also tried to do the other suggestions of what I could understand on this page but none of that worked either. I'm really not a technical person at all so I'm extra bewildered with this problem.

Just wondering if anyone has found other solutions to fix this and i would be grateful if someone could give me advice in plain english 🙂 I have an iMac and its a 10.4 if that makes any difference.

Thanks in advance

Jun 13, 2009 6:26 AM in response to an apple a day...

I've tried all the things in the thread and more but finally after having made a backup of data from another mac using firewire and the T mode, I finally decided to reinstall Mac OS X 10.4 with the 'keep existing users data/settings' option (I don't remember the exact wording).

After reinstalling 10.4.6, downloading all the updates (10.4.11 combo, Quicktime 7.6, Java, etc.), I had to manually reinstall Itunes 8.2, Safari 3.2 and Open Link ODBC (if you need that) and some fonts and now it works as before the Safari 4 update.

I won't touch Safari 4 until I'm sure the problem is found. Bug in the installer ?
Problem with some plugin like Cool Iris, Adobe AIR, Silverlight ??? I have no idea except I have installed Safari 4 alone via Software update when the problem appeared.

So plugins should not be the cause.

I'm at a loss to understand the cause of this problem:
- it doesn't happen on every computer
- it does appear on some 10.4 and 10.5 systems
- some have just the problem with some webcore library missing
- some have problems with the file allocation entries and must repair the disk in console mode
- some have suggested problems with file permissions

In my setup, this path&file exists:

/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Safari.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/QuartzC ore.framework/Versions/A/QuartzCore

However I do not have the path:

/System/Library/Frameworks/QuartzCore.framework/Versions/A/

I have:

/System/Library/Frameworks/Quartz.framework/Versions/A/

so cannot create the link to that. Any advice as what to do?

If your problem is similar to mine you may try to link the whole framework:
/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Safari.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/QuartzC ore.framework to /System/Library/Frameworks/QuartzCore.framework

Command:
ln -s /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Safari.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/Quartz Core.framework /System/Library/Frameworks/

Comp won't boot after installing Safari 4
