Map not moving & Google Search not working

I am so frustrated. I am trying to add a custom location in iPhoto.

To do this I am using the Google Search in Manage My Places section. The google search just does not work. I type in London and the map greys out and the round timer comes up and then nothing.... It runs like this forever!

In addition, I have tried to grab the map to centre a part of it I am interested in. Grabbing the map just picks up the square of the map I have selected and tries to copy it. If I hold on and take it over the desktop and then release, it copies a square of the map into a file and deposits it on the desktop. I have tried this in all of the parts of the app that let me see a map. They all behave the same.

I have read from the forum that other people have had this kind of problem when their internet connection isn't working but mine is.

I have switched off the firewall. No change

Google works fine on Safari and it can find London....

Help!!!

For those who find that deleting the iPhoto plist "solves" the problems with Places only temporarily, I have posted a workaround here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2030952&tstart=0. Essentially, you have allow the "Welcome to iPhoto '09" window to display every time iPhoto opens (i.e., don't uncheck "Show this window when iPhoto opens"), and do not close iPhoto when in the Places view.

For what it's worth here's the fix that worked for me:;

After deleting the plist and once again being able to zoom and pan Google maps and to "Find on map," I've tried only gradually reconfiguring iPhoto to how it was when the problems arose, hoping to discover the user configurable options that cause them. I was not able to provoke the problem by configuring any option in the preferences. The problems seem related to something iPhoto does to preserve the application state when I quit iPhoto. It seems that, as long as I do not quit in the Places view AND as long as I do not uncheck "Show this window when iPhoto opens" in the Welcome to iPhoto window, I can quit iPhoto, restart it, and the maps are fine. Just not quitting in the Places view is not sufficient. Eventually the problems reoccur. It also seems that, to regain the use of Google maps, it is sufficient to recheck the "Show this window ..." option in Help/Welcome to iPhoto AND to close iPhoto in a view other than Places.

Thanks to Larry for finding that in this topic and posting it further: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=9605093#9605093.

To get that welcome window to come up you'll need to delete iPhoto's preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist. Then follow the instructions above when you launch iPhoto. Weird, yes, but it worked for me.

Don't thank me thank the original poster that Larry came across and brought to a wider audience. It takes a lot of people to peruse all of the posts to find those that will help others in similar situations.

However, I've found that the fix is short lived. I make sure I didn't close iPhoto in the Places mode but had to delete the iPhoto preference file again. It's tenuous at best.
