Color fades when scrolling in Safari 4

Since upgrading yesterday from Safari 4 beta to Safari 4 proper (and from 10.5.6 to 10.5.7), a strange things happen: when I scroll up or down in Safari, the color fades. It returns if I stop and click outside the app (i.e. on the desktop background), then recurs if I again scroll in Safari. Didn't happen before the upgrade, and it's quite annoying. Any suggestions?

Same problem here.
I think I've the same configuration, MacBook pro early '08 running 10.5.7 and safari 4.0.1, I'm using an external 23" cinema display.
I confirm that the only "workaround" i have found out working is to drag the "corrupted" window to the laptop display...
I hope they will fix this issue sooooon.

PS: last but not least... I've, more or less, the same issue using Aperture!

Same issue here on both my MacBook Pro and Mac Pro. Both have dual monitors, OS 10.5.7.

Issues seem to occur with Safari 4 and Logic Pro.

Color seems to fade gradually as I scroll the browser window or arrangement window (Logic) until it is gray scale.

Seems like the screen saver or display sleep might be linked to the problem which sends me back to the Mac Plus days of black and white screens.

If I open the System Preferences - Displays panel, the problem disappears.

Ken,

Thanks, guess my QA habits are hard to break. I hadn't tried with single monitor (Doh!) went back and checked it out.

Wasn't able to recreate the issue with single monitor using the same steps as with dual monitors: (load page, logout via FUS, log back in)

Although several other folk have also mentioned they're on singles when it happens. Also curious how colorsync may play a hand in this. I didn't try reseting both monitors back to the default colorsync profiles in the display system prefs.

Don't know when I'll have opportunity test that, the laptops back with it's rightful owner, and she's rightfully suspicious of letting me play with it unsupervised. 😉

Anyone else game to try that?

Somebody needs to remark this question as UNANSWERED. I don't see a final fix anywhere. I would think some sort of update should be needed. Here are some screenies of mine. I fix mine by just resizing the window slightly, or another tab and coming back. This is not a fix!

You'll see in the last picture that I've scrolled up part way and it cleaned up the color. Pretty stupid.

ONE: THIS ISN'T ANSWERED.

TWO: If you're going to flag the thread "answered" it would be considerate to flag which flipping post supposedly contains an "answer".

THREE: I've seen this occur on both external monitor and LCD. Usually it's one or the other, if I move the safari window to a different monitor, problem disappears. Does anyone know how to go back to a previous version of Safari? This is shameful. Has Apple even heard of quality control?

This question is NOT answered. A workaround is not a bug fix. This is a bug.
The desaturating on my MacBook happens with an external monitor when a Safari window is scrolled. Reloading restores the original saturation level.
Safari is the only program that I have observed to have this problem. If you are using a dual monitor display and want to verify this problem, do this:
1. Bring up a color image in a new window on the external monitor - or the one that you observe the problem on (here's one: http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=6168326)
2. Scroll the window down ONE mouse click at a time. Do you see progressive desaturation?
3. Resize the window. Do you see the original colors restored? This also happened if I moved the window to the main display.

heluu there,

many suggestions but no real answers, as far as i get...

i just fixed the problem here on my machine, and i though i'd let you know (perhaps someone can reproduce and test a bit more and bring some clarity):

"SOLUTION:

1) exit Safari
2) trash your Safari prefs (a file called 'com.apple.Safari.plist', located in ~/Library/Preferences), but DON'T empty the Trash
3) restart Safari (this will create a new prefs file)
4) exit Safari again, and move back your old prefs file from the trash. you will be prompted to replace an already existing file - just go ahead and say yes.
5) start up Safari again, and voila!"

the above is a copy/paste from another post - if it's a bit thin, more info here: http://anthon.se/zoom/4

Deleting the .plist file only worked until the next time I used fast user switching or my display went to sleep. Not a permanent fix for me.

The OS X 10.5.8 and Safari 4.0.2 updates did nothing. What a joke. I've pretty much given up on Safari since ver 4, and apparently so has Apple. Firefox does everything I need.

I am seeing this as well. I noticed it last week and I thought I was over it after restarting Safari. I am using an external monitor and Spaces. Since I had not see it for several days, I just tried a little experiment.

I had Safari 4.0.2 running (with no problems) and I used Fast user Switching (FUS) to switch to an admin account (my normal account is not an admin). I started Safari 4.0.2 in that account. I switched back to my primary account and Safari was super-saturated with jagged text.

I switched back to the admin account, quit Safari, and logged out of the admin account. I logged into my primary account and Safari was fine again.

My guess is that there is a lock file somewhere when you start Safari and the higher permissions of the admin user prevent my non-admin account from accessing the lock file.
