An iPhone has been detected, but it could not be identified properly

I get the following message whenever I connect my iPhone 3G "An iPhone has been detected, but it could not be identified properly. Please disconnect and reconnect the iPhone, then try again."
I have uninstalled iTunes 8.2 using Add/Remove Programs. I have hot rebooted my iPhone in the cradle with iTunes open.
iTunes seems to function normally otherwise, as does my iPhone.
I'm using the 64 bit version with Vista.

Dell XPS 420, Windows Vista, 16 GB 3G

Hello,

*SOLVED HERE SOLVED HERE SOLVED HERE SOLVED HERE SOLVED HERE SOLVED HERE*

Iphone 3G 3.0
Itunes : 8.2.0 and 8.2.1

I have 3 PCs, 2 PCs having the same message "An iPhone has been detected, but it could not be identified properly", and Itunes starts very slowly.

On third PC, Itunes works perfectly and can synchronized with my Iphone.

By reading this page on Apple support: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2818,
there is this paragraph:

+"Boot to a selective startup (MSConfig)+
+In some cases, third-party services or startup items may cause this issue. You can disable these by booting your computer to a selective startup using MSConfig (Windows XP steps and Windows Vista steps)."+

So I have set to ON/OFF every applications running in background when booting my PCs and I have found the faulty application on 1 PC: it was PWRISOVM.EXE

It is a part of PowerIso. It is used to create virtual CD/DVD Rom drive to mount ISO, BIN, etc image files.

"PWRISOVM.EXE - PowerISO's application for creating a virtual drive for use in the process of ISO file creation and burning."

It has worked on my first PC, so I did the same thing on second one and it is now work on every PCs.

Itunes starts faster than before.

May be you should check if you have a software to manage ISO, BIN, ... image file
on a virtual CD/DVD drive and uninstall or disable it.

Thanks and good luck

To those with this problem...do you have Comcast Cable internet access?

Reason I ask is, I get the message when connected to the internet with Comcast...but if I connect via VPN to my work (which Speakeasy T-1 access) the phone is recognized fine. Same if I turn off WIFI the phone is recognized fine.

It seems to me iTunes is trying to contact Apple when my phone is plugged in, but Comcast blocks it. When there is no internet access it works fine, as well as when I'm connected to the internet via my work's VPN (and thus the Speakeasy IP address).

Just a data point. I downloaded the 8.2.1 today and it didn't help.

I figured out the question of drives and part of it was my mistake but, in the process I did find a solution last weekend only to have it fail tonight. IF, I plugged in device to USB hub and then used windows "Safely Remove Hardware" before removing device when I plugged in iPhone and started iTunes it worked. The first time I had to use a device in both hubs and then until tonight found it would work with only using one. When it worked any combination of disconnection or end program still worked when reconnected or restarted. Every time computer was shutdown I had to play with devices to get iTunes to work. It worked for me this morning and then tonight no combination would work. iPhone plugged in iTunes would freeze and not respond forcing me to use task manager to end task. Why did it work for days and then tonight fail? Why are we finding something that works only to find it temporary? We already have seen 8.2.1 and many of us are still trying to figure this out as Apple cannot seem to help out. The latest I heard from a tech was to check cable for defect, I already replaced a defective cable and it does work with both cables I now own. The problem is iTunes which did work fine for me too when it was 8.1.1. Is there an 8.2.2 on the way?

Hello,

Itunes: 8.2.0 & 8.2.1
Iphone 3G 3.0

Have you tried to disable ALL startup items first with MsConfig ?

If it works, it means there is an item which is the cause of this problem, so you have to enable these items one by one (or more) and reboot to find the wrong one.

That's how I have definitively solved this on 2 PCs (1 XP and 1 Vista).

😉

I disabled all items in MSCONFIG the very next day while on the phone with Apple support back on June 19th. I also tried it myself later following other attempts to resolve but, maybe third time is a charm. I'll try again to see if it makes any difference now. I'll post if I find it does, if not we'll continue looking. You'll note I have a 8GB phone in case there is a connection to the size.

I am beginning to suspect that the 8GB iPhone is incapable of handing the 3.0 firmware upgrade, because of size constraints. It's unfortunate that the iTunes upgrade 8.2 was released at the same time as the firmware upgrade 3.0 for the iPhone, as it has made it unclear as to which one is the culprit....
That's only my humble opinion, as a none technical observer.
PS; Notice the new I phone 3GS is not available in 8G.. !!
