iPhone activation server temporarily unavailable

I'm trying to install iPhone OS 3.0, it downloaded just fine but when it came time to install the install failed because "The iPhone activation server is temporarily unavailable". I have been retrying the install process constantly but have had no luck, is anyone else experiencing this issue? Any tips on how to accomplish a successful install?

Alright...I never complain about APPLE but here I go. They really screwed up how they rolled out 3.0 today. I got up this morning at 7AM CST and the update was not available. I came home at noon for lunch and the update was not available. Then I come home at 3 and the update is available but now I get the error message "Server is Temporarily Unavailable."

Come on APPLE! They should have made the update available at midnight Eastern time. Then all the late nighters could have updated and installed. Also, each person could have awoken at their chosen time and installed, Thus spreading out the traffic to the server.

Instead they wait till 3PM CST and create a funnel of traffic which overwhelmed the servers. I understand a lot of people are trying to get this update but DANG! APPLE THINK! You could make this sooooo much easier for yourself, your call centers, your servers and especially your CUSTOMERS!

Gosh Dang this crap makes me mad!

Here's the tip......

IMP: If you have downloaded the iPhone 3.0 update (230 MB (241,229,233 bytes)) then this tip would work.

1. Make sure your internet connection is working fine
2. Click on the Update button on the Summary page of the iTunes (8.2.0.23)
3. You should see a window showing Extracting with a progress bar
4. As soon as the progress bar reaches 100% turn off your WiFi/LAN connection
5. iTunes would be able to update the software

Basically after image file extraction, iTunes calls home and when the Activation server is down, it replies bcak to iTunes with an XML file containing string "Status" value "DOWN" - and hence you see that error message.

It appears that iTunes is unable to handle network interface not available (or ignoring it) and as such allows the update process to begin.

Please let me know if this tip worked for you. It worked for 2 of my iPhones.
