Strange WiFi problem on iPhone 3G after 3.0 update

Just thought I'd see if anyone else is having the same strange problem with the WiFi on their iPhone after the 3.0 update.

Essentially, WiFi works fine after the phone has been freshly booted (i.e. right after a restart) - however, once it has put itself into standby mode it will no longer download data over a WiFi connection after the phone is turned on again. It remains able to find the WiFi network, but simply refuses to download data over it.

Have tried restarting my phone and changing the WiFi security from WPA to WEP, but to no avail...

Hello Everyone

I have had SUCCESS fixing my iPhone! I am running OS 3.0 on a 3G iPhone. I have not been able to find any WiFi networks on my phone for the last few weeks. I have been reading every post on the subject I could find, and resetting my network settings, restarting my phone, restoring my phone, etc. all have NOT worked.

What finally worked was doing what someone in this list and turning off Push email. I went to settings, Mail, then turned OFF push email and left it at fetch every 15 minutes. I then restarted my phone and have been on my WiFi network with no problems since. I have let my phone go into idle mode and it still has a WiFi connection.

Hope this helps most of you, until Apple has a real fix so we can turn push email back on.

Had 3.0 installed for 3 weeks, then Wifi went out completely. Tried all the resets, even erased the whole phone as stated in the KB articles.... nothing worked. Took it into Apple store and had it replaced in 20 minutes. If you are still under your warranty or Apple Care, just back up your phone and take it into the Apple Store.

My new phone came with 2.2.1 so I'm not upgrading back to 3.0 till this issue is solved. I really don't feel like making weekly Genius appointments and replacing my phone. Also, the phone saw all my routers with out a single issue when I got the replacement. I didn't have to reset or replace my router, mess with passwords etc. It worked just like it should.

Genius appointment lasted 5 mins. He checked for water.. OKAY... gave me a new one... installed with 2.2.1 which I will keep until 3.1.

He mentioned he has been a few with the same problem but would not be pushed on volume nor if this was a 3.0 issue. Saying that two other people behind me in the appointment queue with the same problem. Unfortunately for one girl she failed the phone has been wet test. Both her tags had turned red, tried to deny but the Genius showed her exactly what he was looking at.

Downside is only a 90 day warranty, but that will take me nearly 3 months past manufacturers on my old phone.

Your iPhone does not connect to any WLAN/WIFI networks at all - just some days after updating it to 3.0. You don't like that? Then:

1. Change your WLAN-/WIFI-station to non secured (no password)
2. Try to connect your iPhone - most probably it won't connect
3. Change airplane mode to "On" and wait 10 sec
4. Change airplane mode to "Off" and wait 10 sec
5. Change airplane mode to "On" and wait 10 sec
6. Change WIFI to "Off" and wait 10 sec
7. Change WIFI to "On" and wait 10 sec
8. Try to connect - most probably it will connect!
9. Now change your WLAN-/WIFI-station to secured 128-Bit-WEP and give it a password
10. Change WIFI to "Off" and wait 10 sec
7. Change WIFI to "On" and wait 10 sec
8. Try to connect with your new password - most probably it will connect again!

In my case it now even connects easily to all the other networks again now!

right, that'll work, but only if you also place the phone into the freezer for 5 minutes (between the last airplane mode "on" and the WiFi "off" step) and wrap your WiFI station in aluminum foil for 10 sec just before you turn airplane mode to "on" again. This will connect you, specifically if you did not forget to hold your iphone so that the lower left corner points to true north. Not quite sure why but this worked for me!

Who needs a functioning 3.1. when we can figure things out all by ourselves. Good luck.

I tried this, unfortunately it doesn't work for me. It never detects my network, even after the whole procedure. I followed every step you described, just like all the other solutions on this topic 😉
But even if it would work, the phone function would still be bad and I wouldn't be able to recieve phonecalls or text messages normally

Grrrrrrrrrrrr flippin Apple and their 'we never makes mistakes' attitude.

Like everyone else, my WiFi finally died. Went to Genius bar appointment this morning and nearly had a massive row.

Firstly he told me this was the first time they had seen the problem.

Secondly he said they had no word from Apple of an issue.

Thirdly he said a software update could, in no way, cause the WiFi to fail.

Fourthly (and even though this is a replacement handset from failings on the last software update they did) he said my phone was not under warranty so I will have to pay £139 to get a new one. I asked excitedly if that would be a 3GS as they don't make mine anymore. He soon squashed that by saying they have plenty of 16GB 3G models left for replacements. Double Grrrrr!

Now, as I pay insurance through O2 which I've never used, how about I throw it onto concrete, break the screen, claim on insurance and get a new one?

It's the only option I can see at the moment! HELP!

Yup replacements are only under a 90 day warranty or under your original 1 year Apple warranty you had with the first phone, whichever ends last.

Genius' will never admit to issues as this could bring them into issues with Apple corp.

Insurance seems to be your only option to get a replacement which I assume would be under 90 day warranty.... oops there goes the screen....
