uniq0, you are a lifesaver... frustration level rose a touch before I found your post. I was just receiving this error on a brand spanking iPhone 4 upgraded to the latest iOS, brief spat of unhappiness there, argh.
I DID JUST WHAT U SAID DO AND IT WORKED LIKE A CHARM,,I WAS ABOUT TO PAY TO GET HELP FROM THE APPLE HELPLINE,,,MATTER OF FACT THE IPOD SEEMS LIKE IT'S BRAND NEW,,,,THANKS
I just started getting this error message when syncing my iPhone 4, shortly after upgrading to iTunes 10 (not sure if that's the cause or not).
I've tried the following, to no avail:
- Unchecking "Sync Music", syncing, then rechecking it.
- Unchecking "Include music videos"
- Unchecking "Include voice memos"
- Deleting all of my voice memos from iTunes.
- Deleting everything I've added to the iTunes Library in the last week (not a ton, but still got rid of it just in case)
What's sort of odd is that unchecking and rechecking "Sync Music" seems to do
something but it still doesn't work:
Before unchecking it, I get the "unknown error" message right away when I try to sync.
After unchecking, hitting Sync, rechecking and hitting Sync again, it does filter through all 961 songs in my library (and takes a few minutes), giving the impression that it's working.
Ultimately, the same "unknown error" message pops up again... no matter what I do.
I had this exact problem. Removing my music, video, and other things did not work. I was nervous about my profile being corrupt somehow. So, I backed up my recent sync folders. Then, I restored my phone and re-synced from my last back-up. I'm not sure why it wouldn't sync before, but after the restore, everything worked just fine. It's like nothing ever went wrong.
I cannot think of anything that would have caused this sync error because there have obviously been incidents spanning multiple updates that have been reported for over a year. Nevertheless, it was easily fixed. I'm guessing there was a corruption, but I'm hoping it's not an indicator of a bigger problem.
I've had this problem a couple of times, and checking and unchecking things in iTunes as suggested in this Apple knowledge base article and on this discussion board hasn't worked for me, but deleting all the voice memos from my PC worked.
The implementation of voice memo syncing is weird and seems to result in many duplicates being created. Instead of sorting it all out I just made a backup copy of them somewhere else on my computer to go through later, and got rid of them in my iTunes library.* Sync works without error now.
(*I actually dragged them from the folder where they were to a new folder using Explorer. This made iTunes upset because it couldn't find them anymore, so I also had to run the RemoveDeadTracks script to get rid of the associated entries in the iTunes library. But had I deleted them using the iTunes interface I probably wouldn't have had that problem. Interestingly, when you delete them in iTunes, it doesn't give you the option to delete the file from the file system the way it does when you delete a song. So you have to go manually delete or move the files afterward.)
This worked for me.
I tried previous post and same error. I deleted all my voice memos, i should have tried the most recents first, and syncing with no errors now.
Doing the unsync/sync for the music and, separately, voice memos did not work for me. However, since the only things that had changed since my last sync were new podcasts, I did the unsync/sync for podcasts, and it worked.
Maybe it is a general problem with the syncing, affecting different aspects depending on the situation. If you are having problems, consider doing it for the various sync-able parts.
I keep getting this error too. Started happening regularly about 2 updated ago and before that every now and then. I will restore my ipod... and it syncs fine for about 4-5 times... and then i get the error again and im screwed.
soo annoying. Apple has def been lacking in the quality dept lately.
this was the key thing that fixed sync problem for me. had a few voice memos that were 0 sec. left a couple in of various lengths. after removing most vms including the 0 sec long ones, sync'd ok.
