I installed the invisible shield Front piece only on my 3G. It took 5 minutes, installed flawlessly without any bubbles, and has been solid since 5/19/09 (when I got the 3G.)

I would recommend the front shield to anyone looking to protect the screen. My 3GS should be here today and I would like to get another front just for the piece of mind of not scratching the screen. I am going to check out the new screen surface first to see what it is all about.

I am glad it worked for you spacerobot.

But to the OP,

The front shield is sticky, applies with liquid and is easy to mess up.

The shields at the apple store are reusable and this helps when you don't get it on straight to reposition. Also if you have to exchange the phone, you can swap it. No liquid is involved and it is not sticky. I have the same one on my iphone 3g for a year now.

Save yourself some frustration...

I still think the main question is not being answered - and probably can't yet.

The new 3GS screen has a oleophobic coating which no screen previously had.

Just because your new skin sticks on fine doesn't mean (yet) that it is safe for the screen.
Has anyone removed one yet (the water stick on types)? I fully agree that these types of skins are far superior (I've used one on a Touch for well over a year). I would just like to see a statement by Apple or at least the skin manufacturer that they are safe for the new screens.

Just a personal preference, but I like the ZAGG on the back and the Apple Crystal Clear on the front (which is safe).

The Crystal is much smoother than the ZAGG. I just found the ZAGG too tacky for the front.

Furthermore, the ZAGG went on great on the 2g. The 3g had some initial challenges which I understand they have fixed.

Hope that helps...

As a big believer in the Invisible Shield, I decided to take the challenge and remove mine off the screen. I have to tell you that I've never had one come off so easily and it has cured since Friday so it was well sealed. It is clearly easy to tell that there is some sort of coating on the display because normally it takes a bit to get these off and even though when you get them off they don't leave any residue (because they don't have an adhesive on them regardless of what others have said), this one came off incredibly easy. So, in my opinion you will see no harm to the special coating that comes on these new 3Gs iPhones. I think this one came off so smoothly I can probably reapply it. So that special coating is doing its job.

Lol, you rocks man! I was trying to be gentle with these people here, but you got it right! 🙂

Guys, I am a worst person in matter of patience. But if you really need to get something done neatly, you need to be patient. If you guys having any problem applying zagg to your device, dont be in a hurry. Google youtube videos, how to apply zagg!

I pre-preordered my 3GS and Zagg on 12th June. Since 12th June I watched many youtube videos how to apply zagg (remember, I already applied zagg to my 3G almost a year ago), but I wanted to be more accurate this time. This time it took less than 1 hour for me to complete the application and it came out fantastic.

Now, the so called new coating on 3GS screen, I have no idea what chemeical they used there lol. However, only help that "coating" doing is that minimizing finger prints on the screen. So technically, I dont see any damage zagg could do to the screen coating. Personally, I would accept that damage rather than scratching my iPhone.

Those who are worried about the screen coating, apply zagg/similar body only application and apply static protector on the screen.

Those who keep debating and complaining get your device scratched 🙂

quick question, those of you that are using the Zagg, are you able to use it with the slider case by incase. I got my wife the iskin case that came with a mirrored screen protector, which looks really cool, but it's hard to see through it, especially outside. So I went to bestbuy and picked up the DLO surface shield to replace the mirrored one for my wife and to give me one to use with my Incase slider. However after applying it and placing the slider case back on, it bubbled up on the sides and began to peal off. I saw the Zagg, it was quite a bit more expensive. Will that work with my case.

I agree. I used one of those Zagg shields on my 3G and it was awful. The screen part went on OK, but the back was a disaster. Lots of bubbles that never went away and the corners peeled up and would not stick back down. Also, the screen part had a sort of orange-peel texture and and had a rather unpleasant stickiness so that it made smooth finger swipes difficult..and just looked awful. Total waste of money. Went back to the rubber sleeve and the clear screen protector they sell at the Apple Store. That's what went on my 3GS immediately when I got it.

If the coating on the screen is so delicate then just swiping your fingers across it would wear it off pretty quick. It would need to be chemically bonded to the glass to be worth anything, in which case a screen protector's method of adhesion would not hurt it. None of the screen protectors I ever had had any sort of heavy duty adhesives on them, and some, like the one I have now seem to stick by static force. And besides, since the screen has a protector on it it hardly matters whether or not it has a coating anyhow.

Just wanted to post my experience since you were looking for someone who has removed one from their 3GS...

When I picked mine up on Saturday I grabbed an Invisible Shield...after much frustration and nearly smashing the phone in a fit of nerd rage, I had my wife finish the application for me and it came out nicely (I thought).

I absolutely hated the feeling of the phone in the skin, and the texture of the plastic on the front combined with the tacky, rubbery feel absolutely killed the iphone experience for me...no smooth scrolling and finger swipes.

I peeled it off after 2 days and was wondering about the oleophobic finish, and worried if I had ruined it. On close inspection, the screen looked absolutely fine, and then I "tested" it a bit by rubbing my fingers across the screen quite a bit and holding the phone to various parts of my face simulating a call after which the phone would normally look kinda smudged and require a wipedown. It was functioning just as it had when it came out of the box and I did this same little test...still got a bit smudged which is to be expected, but nothing like the screen on the 2g or 3g did. It also wiped clean with minimal effort and looked perfect afterward.

So, in my VERY unscientific tests and experience, removing the invisible sheild did not appear to damage the oleophobic coating on the new phones. YMMV.
