What's it take to video chat with AIM?

I've tried video chatting using iChat on my end with an AIM user who has the "video chat option" button next to their name, but whenever I do the video chat window never gets past the "waiting to accept."

Exactly what does it take to successfully video chat with an AIM user?

You'll find a lot of tips about things to try in various FAQs and posts in this forum, but I think the truth is that with the current versions of iChat AV and AIM, you may never be able to get it to work.

You'll have to decide whether it's worth it to try. Instead, you might be better off exploring Mac to Mac or PC to PC video connection options, or you might want to just wait for the next version of iChat AV or AIM to see whether things improve.

I'm a PC user as well as a Mac user, and I've virtually stopped using AIM for video conferencing because of Mac to PC connection problems and because of the tiny video window in the current version of AIM.

But most of the frustration pertains to video conferencing and to a lesser extent, audio conferencing.

The only thing that iChat AV and Google Talk have in common is Jabber, which presently doesn't support cross-platform video or audio conferencing.

In the meantime, I think that more users should have at least one Mac and one PC computer. To me, it makes just as much sense (if not more so) than owning two automobiles that are used for different purposes.

With computer prices and miniaturization being what they are today, fewer people can say in good conscience that they can't afford a second computer or that they don't have room for one.

oh, and with pc's, only video works, in min. fps, no audio, dunno why, but aol im to ichatAV, @ least until now, does only video chat, so you can see the other chatter, but you have to write to him... bummer... i hope the jabber/google thing will get things going that all OS's can do A/V chat with a decent framerate(above 20fps) and decent audio(no lag). until now only ichatAV has been good to me, and only mac to mac...

For some of us with certain PCs, only audio works with Mac to PC connections. Video doesn't work at all.

Personally, I think most people are wasting their time with trying to troubleshoot Mac to PC AIM video connections. There are too many variables that Apple and AOL don't have time to deal with as they are more concerned with Mac to Mac and PC to PC video connection issues, respectively.
