Custom SMS Sounds & Ringtones

Hello,

I am wondering if anyone knows how to make custom SMS sounds for the iPhone 3Gs without Jailbreak? I have watched many videos on youtube that can do it but I don't want to Jailbreak my phone. There is a way to make free Ringtones from your Itunes library (see Link below)so there must be a way to make custom SMS tones WITHOUT jailbreaking. If you know how to do this please let me know.

Thank you.

You don't have to pay $15.00 to make ringtones. Just take a look at this youtube video on how to do it. Please not that you can only make ringtones from music that you have NOT purchased from Itunes. (they are not protected)

Follow the link......its free

How To Convert And Synchronize MP3 Files To iPhone Ring Tones for Free In Microsoft Windows

Hello My Rapidly Rising Number of Rapscallions,

From the days of my first Windows Mobile Smart Phone, I have enjoyed using my own personally created sound files as ring tones, reminders, and notifications. I see no reason why I should not be allowed to do this on the iPhone 3G S for free.

Of course, in its infinite wisdom, Apple disagrees and as a result, wants me to pay for ring tones or some third-party application to make ring tones on my iPhone. To Apple I say, “No Way Baby!!!!!”

To convert your own MP3, WMA, or anything else (Smile), do the following:

NOTE 1:
This document presumes that you are familiar with the basic functions of Apple iTunes 8.x for Windows.

NOTE 2:
This document presumes that you understand basic file management design.

NOTE 3:
In order to be used as a iPhone ring tone, sounds files must be converted to AAC format. This can be done using iTunes.

NOTE 4:
Make sure your Windows Folder Display Options are set to show file extensions for known file types.

1.
From the iTunes Edit Menu, select Preferences.

2.
On the General Tab, Click the Import Settings Button.

3.
From the Import Using Listbox, choose AAC Encoder.

4.
From the Setting Listbox, choose iTunes Plus.

5.
Click “OK” to save your changes.

6.
From the iTunes Files Menu, select Add File To Library. In the resulting Dialog Box, point to and open the file you wish to use as an iPhone ring tone. A file conversion Dialog Box may appear. If so, Click the “Convert” button. A copy of your original file will be imported and converted to the AAC format.

NOTE 5:
If you know the location to which iTunes saves your imported music files, you may skip Step 7.

7.
To determine the file location of the newly created AAC file, while the file is in focus in iTunes, Right-Mouse Click and select Show in Windows Explorer.

8.
Copy this file to another location in preparation for the next step.

NOTE 6:
The following steps apply only to the file created in Step 8.

9.
Change the file extension from .m4a to .m4r. Your Ring tone has now been created.

10.
From the iTunes Files Menu, select Add File To Library. In the resulting Dialog Box, point to and open the newly created .m4r file. From the iTunes Library Tree, select Ring Tones to see your new ring tone.

NOTE 7.
Assuming that your iTunes Sync settings are correct, the next time you sync your iPhone, the newly created ring tones will be available on your device.

Enjoy,

Mark

ringtones are easy, there are guides everywhere.

SMS alerts are simpler, if you have a jailbroken phone. iphone filesystem has "ReceivedMessage.caf" and "sms-received.caf" files which are used in the "iChat" messaging app - sms-received.caf is the standard text alert (there are 6 of the sms-received .cafs) and ReceivedMessage.caf is the chirpy/farty noise when a new message comes in.

To replace these, simply SSH in and swap files.

In its infinite wisdom, though, Apple has locked us endusers out of this capability and kept us stuck on 6 unchangeable alerts. Boo, Apple.

*rolls eyes*

You can use a song that was purchased from iTunes and that was not purchased from iTunes and make a ringtone of it right off of iTunes. Here is how and I found this on Cnet.com.....First select the song you want to make the ringtone on as if you were getting ready to play it. If you have the new trackpad use 2 fingers to pull up a right click(windows users just right click) then select options and then go down and put a check mark in the boxes that show beginning and ending(maximum of 20 seconds) then select that song again(already preselected) and on the tool bar select advanced and chose (create aac version) and this will create a second version of the song with your specified length of any part of the song(max 20 seconds) take that copy and drag it to your desktop and rename the extension to "m4r" and then press enter. Choose the new format of "m4r" then drag that copy over to the library side of itunes and it will appear as a ringtone. Once again this can be used with purchased and none purchased music in iTunes. It works for me every time! If I missed a step then go to Cnet.com and search apple tips then chose create ringtones from iTunes.

Baloney. For music that is available via the iTunes store that is also licensed to be sold and used as a ringtone via the iTunes store is determined and required by those who own the distribution rights for the music, not by Apple. Apple is the distributor. The iTunes store alone is designed and intended to be a break even financially for Apple - with this info made available with their quarterly and annual financial reporting. Apple's profit lies with the hardware that uses iTunes - iPods and iPhones.

Apple made it possible to create free ringtones for the iPhone with the GarageBand applicaton included with each Mac purchase, with the ability to send the completed ringtone direct from GarageBand to your iTunes library as a ringtone for the iPhone without having to do anything extra such as changing the file name, etc. This has been available with a Mac for a long time with Apple including a technical support document here with instructions for how to do so.

There is also a way to create ringtones for the iPhone manually with iTunes for non-DRM protected music on a Mac or PC, with the instructions for doing so having been around for some time.

There are some 3rd party apps that do the manual steps with iTunes for doing so automatically.

If Apple were against this, they could make changes to make the process much more difficult.
