I would just like to share my weird experience with the earphones of the 3rd gen shuffle, as we all know the problem of the earphones while working out, so after a few days i tried using again my busted earphones and amazingly it worked ok again, the volume controls was doing fine for at least an hour so i thought it was only a small glitch but then after an hour the problem started, you can increase the volume but can't lower it then after a few minutes the volume decreased by itself. I hope all of our messages are reaching apple and solve this problem as soon as possible!
I actually bought the belkin adapter and now use a different headset with the shuffle 3rd gen. Haven't had an issue since I changed out the headphones. Belkin adapter has the controller near the unit itself, and works just fine. It's $19.99 at Best Buy or online. Good luck!
One other bit of information is that when I run on the treadmill, I attach the shuffle to the treadmill itself ... it is not near my body but it still had the problem after about 45 minutes.
Was it near your body before mounting the treadmill and/or might condensation be running downhill along the headphones to the unit's jack?
I am so glad to hear others are having this problem. I just got my 3rd replacement shuffle in the past month. The last one I had starting going bonkers after 2 days!! I only use the shuffle when I'm working out and that lasts about an hour or hour and a half. Within 35-40 it starts to go nutty listing the song, going through my playlist names and then locking up. I can't believe Apple desgined a product that is used for working out that malfunctions when it gets wet or sweaty. Who was the genius behind this one?
i think we have a new record. I live in australia where it is pretty warm this time fo year (feb) andw ent for a run with my new 3rd gen 2GB shuffle. It lasted all of 18 mins! yep 18 mins of running. Till the pad in the headphones stopped working and it kept repeating "Play List 1" over and over and only playing 5 seconds of a song then repeating again.
thansk apple for some more crap. ill be marching back to the retailer i bought it from and demand a refund as i am not going thru all the trouble of constant replacements. I had an old ipod mini 4GB that could take a beating but this shuffle can't handle walking!
i have to say that i am SOOOO glad that i'm not the only one having trouble with these stupid headphones!!! i lost my 2nd gen ipod shuffle (it never gave me a lick of trouble!!) so my husband bought me this new one & i have nothing but trouble out of since!! i dont have to be working out at all for the headphones to not work... but it usually does happen when i am. i am so frustrated & i cannot believe that Apple cannot do a better job than this!!
What a bunch of w
*krs Apple are... how are we supposed to fix this problem?
i've got exactly the same, only mine lasted only 15 minutes last night before it cut out, went quiet, voiceover started saying cr4p at me etc etc...
went ionline to try and sort it and they want to charge me for replacement headphones !!!
I tell you what, the mood I am in now, I would happily rip out the voice-box of any apple rep and try and use his lungs as earpieces and esophagus as the headphone cord to see if that would work any better !!!!
When I was in the apple store, they didn't tell me I could only use this on dry days of average temperature and humidity and not to break into any kind of sweat otherwise my music enjoyment would be limited to 15 minutes !!
Someone get in touch with me and sort this cr4p out please before your Solihull branch staff get it !!!
This headphones seem to be a common issue. A very frustrating common issue. Is it some sort of firmware problem? The thing has a mind of it's own. Sometimes the headphone controls work, sometimes they don't. And if not being able to withstand a little moisture is an issue, that is a fatal design flaw since people frequently use them when they work out. I've had mine for two months and I wish I never even bought it. Some cheapo mp3 player would have been better than this piece of crap.
I doubt anyone from Apple reads this. It's just for us minions. It basically said in the service agreement registration fine print that they won't actually respond, troubleshoot or try to advise in any way. For me, it's just a way to publicly voice my discontentment with this product.
So congrats to apple to being the biggest successful failures in the industry....well i wouldn't go that far but i am pretty ****** with this so called leading brand of mp3 players pfftt....got me one of those POS 3rd gen shuffles..yea one of those the one with the integrated playback controls or w/e ....worst ******* idea ever ha!!!!!...why not at least make them more reliable or may just stick with the old ones but with your so called "advanced technology" make them slimmer or somewhat smaller...so smart but yet didn't see this "headphone" problem arising huh..well guess what...now you ****** up...and yes im probably breaking the terms by writing all this and yea U will terminate my account and yeai will not buy another iPod but it wont be some new experiment you guys try out with some new feature cuz you guys obviously need to stick with your classic ipods(without the integrated playback controls) im serious you losin a lot of rep for one little thing and im quite ****** my self and im a big fan of your Mac PCs and especially your ipods but this whole shuffle thing is BS ... i just created this account to let u guys know to keep up the ****** work...have a nice day
total crap. In apple's defense......they are so awesome, they have to mess up on something. Unfortunately mine didn't last as long as most of you. More like a few days...
yea seems to be the theme...please email me with an answer!!!!! I"ll contact them I guess.
I get about 2 to 3 workouts out of my CURRENT Shuffle before returning it to the store for a replacement. I'd really like Apple to work on their quality control and engineering design so I can get my normal 5 weekly workouts completed before having to return said "current" unit. I'd like to keep my trips back to the store down to once a week if possible.
the absolute worse deal ever. I was very stoked as a jogger and ipod phan. these headphones are the biggest pile of turd ever. I did devious things to acquire this ipod, upgrading from a ipod video to reduce bouncing and needless size, to be chastised for something your company does not stand by or support since it's inception is a downright injustice. I've been apple since kindergarten and I am floored.

Anybody ever try heat shrink? I receieved my new headphones from Apple today...great service. I use the shuffle for exercise only, so I would like to keep it in operational condition. We have classics, Nanos, and touches, but the compact size of the shuffle is great. I think I will try some heatshrink.
