Do not want attachments embedded - how do I fix this problem?!?!?!

I frequently have to send attachments in my mail messages (jpegs, tiffs, eps). However, every time I send attachments in jpeg, eps and tiff formats the recipient cannot download them. They are either invisible or embedded in the message - which I do NOT want. The only attachments that my clients seem to NOT have problems with are pdf's. How do I fix this problem? For now, whenever I have to send attachments in those formats, I have to switch over to Entourage. It does not make sense that this is a problem, since most designers use macs and have to deal with graphics on a daily basis, I am stunned that Mac is having this issue. I cringe that I have to switch to a Microsoft product in order to send certain e-mails. HELP!!!

iMac G5, Mac OS X (10.5.5), Mac Mail; stop embedding attachments

Welcome to the Discussions.

This solution should work every time. Do you have a Signature, and if so is that in plain text?

Do you also use Windows Friendly and place attachment last in the message (which probably should be required, but only a safe guard.

If you want to send my a sample message, I can analyze for what may be problematic. My address can be found by clicking on my name to the left, and looking in the bio line of the resulting Profile.

Here is another possible cause that could be totally incorrect today:

At one time, only one attachment was allowed per e-mail message. If you had more than one, the e-mail program would bunch them together, compress them and send them as a single attachment. This single attachment might get a zip, mim or stf suffix. The problem with this system is the recipient did not always have the correct decoder and therefore could not decompress and split the attachment back to the multiple files. Also, some companies' servers would automatically reject "zip" attachments preventing the intended recipient from even receiving the attachment.

If this is still the case, an e-mail program could embed the file instead of attaching it thus allowing it to travel over the internet.

What happens if you try to attach a single document of any format? If it works, then the above explanation might be valid.

I've had this problem for a few days and driving my clients mad, only just changed to Apple Mail (although using my own domain account).

I've been sending JPEGs to accounts which have Outlook and gmail with people having issues. You can save as, but some people dont get that...

Anyway, check if you have a signature. If you allowed Mail to create your signature, chances are its plain text.

If you have formatted it at all (size, bold, font etc), then its no long plain test (I assume its HTML)

a)Send the email to a gmail account with a Plain text message and it appears as an attachement.

b) Send it with some a formated signature OR TEXT and it appears to be embedded (although it doesnt stop a user downloading the image)in the email

I see lots of people complaining this is a Microsoft problem, well it appears to be the same deal with Gmail.

Sounds like more of a bug with Apple to me, if the second you make any text bold, it changes how an attachment is displayed

annoying

I can assure you that Apple is creating the messages correctly. No one can control how the recipient displays messages, however, Plus, it is becoming more common for sending or receiving e-mail servers to unpack e-mail messages, scan for attachments, and put them back together incorrectly.
