Ok so I am having some really weird problems with my internet. I got my macbook pro about one month ago, and couldn't get it to connect to my wireless internet at all. I finally figured out it needed to be WPN instead of WEP. It has worked great for a couple weeks, but now it is painfully slow. I have an old PC that works fine, as well as my girlfriends macbook pro. I have run speed test on all three computers wirelessly and though the ethernet cable. The other two computers are running around 10,000 kbps, and my computer is running between 200 and 2000. I have tried doing open DNS, and have had no luck that way. I am at a loss. Oh and the computer works fine every were else besides my house. So I have ruled out the cable internet, the router seems to work fine, and if I'm not at my house the computer works fine. Anyone have any suggestions. The people at Apple, Comcast, and Motorola, seem to be know help since each can claim their product is working fine.
Thanks
Well, I did.
And the Geniuses did not have a clue. With their wi-fi line this now useless expensive brick of mine (Macbook Pro Unibody late 2008) performed quite fine. It was a little slow, but working. On my home network the connection is unusable: slow, lose signal... useless. Often it will work for a couple of minutes and then go down. It's difficult to replicate in a crowded shop.
I have 5 other wireless devices connected without problems to the same network, so DEFINITELY it's not a "channel" or network problem. Or a router problem.
I'm at a loss. And very displeased with my purchase.
I searched the forums and none seems to have a solution (disabling IPv6 doesn't work, btw).
Often the MBP doesn't even see the Airport base...
Have you tried to install the latest Java updates from Apple? After those were installed my wireless seemed to work better. I have no idea what the connection between java and wireless could be, but I keep my fingers crossed!
Ezahn: Wireless networking issues are certainly not an area of expertise for me, but it seems clear that if your machine works fine at the store, there's something going on in your home network that isn't right. I don't know what it is, but I have a few questions about it.
Does the problem vary with where in your home your MBP is located? Is it possible that you've been trying to use it very near a source of radio frequency interference that is farther from your other wirelessly networked devices, or to which they are, for whatever reason, more resistant?
Eww: thanks for your help and interest. No, the problem seems to happen in various area of the (not that big) house. Even near my Airport Extreme base sometimes... I have another, older Macbook Pro that work flawlessly sitting right at the side of this one. It's really difficult to understand. At this moment the connection is working perfectly. In 5 minutes it will be most probably gone down again. Maybe this has something to do with the last 10.6.2 patch? The other MBP is running 10.6.1... but in order to try and downgrade I should go waaaaaay back with a whole Time Machine backup, am I right?
GiuseppeNL: I'm trying to install this latest Java patch. I really don't understand in which way that could help but hey, if someone has seen improvements I'll definitely try that. 😉
Ezahn, I was cheering too soon. My connection/signal dropping airport is back again so I don't think it worked right because of, but just after the Java update. Try to harass apple until you have a solution before your warranty is over. Mine is already.
The new "Airport patch" from 8/12 did not improve anything. Way to go, Apple!
I may be the only one, but for sure I'll not shell money for another great connectionless Macbook Pro.
Sorry. I was patient enough.
