Dell Latitude D510, Windows XP
This has been happening to me for a few weeks. Same error. Today after it happened again, I unplugged my lightning cable from one USB port in my computer and put it in a different port.
iTunes opened just fine and went through the backup process flawlessly.
Can't say why this fixed it, but it did.

It's kinda funny that there are many people with the same problem yet there is no awnser from apple for this problem.
My problem started today, after a long time I turned on my iphone 5c, no problem.
I wanted to give this one to my mom so she had a temporary phone because hers was broken.
I wanted to reinstal it to fabric installings, the iphone turned off and turned itself on, iphone disabled.
Had to connect it with itunes but as you can imagine it doesn't work....
How the **** can I get my iphone back to fabric installing and get that disable **** gone??
Thankssss.
If you tried everything in here including a different cable, a different USB port, reloading the master USB driver (assuming it is a windows computer), and a different computer and cleaning the Lightning port then you probably do need to make a Genius Bar appointment at your nearest Apple Store. You either have a damaged Lightning port connector or a bad battery. If a long time means more than 6 months and you did not charge the battery in the 5c then it probably needs to be replaced.
I have had the same error come up today and apart from me wanting to punch something. I read the "Unplug from front usb and put in rear usb" thinking ...Really????? and I don't know why but it worked. I switched phone off first (iphone7) then plugged in the rear and here we are.
Nothing was punched
