External firewire/usb DVD +/- RW drive

Yes, that drive should be fully supported on your mac and pc. I too use an external DVD RW drive for the same reason, and it works well.

I use a LaCie d2 external DVD+/-RW with firewire and USB2. It works well, but I find that USB2 is more reliable and somewhat faster than the iBook's Firewire 400 connection, which I didn't expect.

I picked up the LG-5163D dvd drive and for some reason my ibook isn't recognizing it. My ibook is brand new and so am i to the world of mac. If you had any luck with this drive let me know. If you know how to make my ibook recognize the drive that would be great too. thanks in advance

I have the 12" iBook (6 mths old), and am thinking of buying the LaCie d2 DVD+/-RW (available from Apple Store), but it says that it requires the Power Mac G4. I am also new to the world of Mac and am wondering if this external drive will work with this computer.

The video encoding software requires a G4 processor, so if your iBook has a G4, you are OK.

If you simply paln to make data CDs and DVDs, a G3 or G4 is OK.

Do i need to get toast in order for this drive to work??? Is toast the software that will make any drive work with a mac??

Where did you purchase your drive? What software was included with the drive? Was it offered as being Mac compatible?

Many drives are available, but not all are supported by OS X or even by Toast.

When purchasing a new drive consider Mac compatibility before price. It will prevent headaches and support issues.

The drive i got, i actually picked up at Sam's club. I picked it up for two reasons:

1. There were a few people on these boards that had used the exact model and raved over it's performance.

2. It's reasonable price.

However, the money i think i've saved have been thrown away in wasted time and headaches over this burner. It seems like my options are either buying toast ($75-$100 i think) or buying a burner from the apple store (who knows how much that will run me!

I'm biased of course, since I am from LaCie.

LaCie does have an external drive model that includes Toast Titanium. There are several configurations available at the Apple Store, as well as other internet resellers and the LaCie online store.

since you are from LaCie maybe you would know of this problem that many are having. When burning the dvd using DVD SP a message will appear when formatting that says* formating Failed--Recording device reported the error #6: Power on, reset, or bus device reset occured. If you have any idea how to fix this, I would be thankful.

Did you try making a disc image from DVD SP, and then use Toast to burn?

How about some info on your configuration:
- version of DVD SP?
- version of OS X?
- what type of LaCie drive?
- what type of media?

Do any other burns work?

If a FireWire drive, what other devices are connected?

other burns work through toast. it is just when i try it in dvd sp that it doesn't work. It is a firewire drive and whenever i am burnning i alwasy only have it connected.
