External firewire/usb DVD +/- RW drive

I am thinking of buying the highly rated LG GSA-5163D DVD drive. It is an external +/- RW DVD drive that uses Firewire or USB technology. I am choosing external because I can take it with me on my G4 Laptop or I can hook to my Win XP desktop and use it there.

I am wondering if my Mac will support this drive or should I look at another product?

Hi everybody,

I am also considering buying an external DVD +/- RW drive.

I have two concerns:

1. Although I am french, I am in Canada right now. It seems to me that the LaCie products seem nice, but they are a lot more expensive in Canada than in Europe. I suppose this is because LaCie is mainly a european company. Or maybe I am wrong and just didn't look at the good resellers? What are the good alternatives to LaCie, that are cheap in Northern America?

2. I have an ibook with a not so big harddrive. What is the typical free space that should be left on the the harddrive to burn a DVD (assuming that what I want to burn on the DVD is already on the harddrive)? I'm just asking about cache or related issues, so that everything functions properly.

You responded to a post about the LG GSA-5163D external DVD drive. I bought one, and it plays CD's and DVD's just fine, but I can't burn anything on it. The CD that came with it is incompatible with my ibook G4. Do you have that version? How did you get the software? I'm going NUTS trying to figure this out, and I'm overseas and need to be able to burn CD's.

Thanks!
