Logic 9: Intel Mac recommended or required?

Logic 9: Intel Mac recommended or required? Would love to upgrade, but can't yet afford a new Mac - anyone know if it can run on a G5 at all?

G5, Mac OS X (10.5.7)

Thanx Ardenne - my PPC will be happy to hear that. I'm not about to run out and plunk down $$$$ for an Intel Mac just to be able to use the newest Logic - when my PPC G5 works great. Sure it may not be the fastest and newest but old Mac's still churn along quite well. I have probably every generation of old Mac in the spare bedroom including a couple of original 1984 9" Macs. I'll eventually upgrade to Logic 9 as I'm just recording basically guitar (just a hobby also) and it has some cool guitar stuff in it... good news anyway!

Trilobyte-- PPC and Logic 9 works...trust me. I'm running it right now-- and
I've worked on three large projects just today.
Your comment about Mac Minis embarrassing PPC G5s is also completely unfounded. I can tell you this-- my Intel Macbook Pro C2Duo 2.4Ghz absolutely eats dirt when compared to my G5 Quad...no ifs ands or buts about it.

In pure speed tests, crunching numbers...etc, the Mini or an Intel laptop may be a little faster but in real world use the older Mac's have better firewire implementation and generally more robust I/O performance. The Texas Instruments Firewire chipsets on the G5's generally blow away all of the newer Lucent offerings.

that's right pancenter... don't count the "old guys" out. Same is true of old guitar players - I can out RAWK most of the youngsters I jam with 😉 I know there's a whole slew of newer faster Intel Mac's out there - but the finished product is what counts - and my "old" G5 does everything I want.

I jammed with a young man a few days ago that had a $6000 guitar and a $3500 amp. Almost $10,000.00 worth of stuff and he sounded (as everyone said later) just crappy. I was using my "old" beat-up Les Paul and a 5-watt Epi Valve Junior Combo amp ($199) and he was amazed at the sound. I tried to explain to him that "it ain't whatcha got - it's the man behind the fingers..."

Long live the PPC chip - it made Apple who they are.

No problem--

Basically what is happening is that both apps are being installed-- BUT they are sharing plist (aka preference files). This can be good and bad. For example, if you change something in LP9, that change will be manifested in LP8 as well (well, assuming that particular setting is available in LP8).

I've noticed that Audio interface preference does not change. So essentially you could run one interface in LP8 and a different one in LP9 without having to change settings. I am assuming this is because these settings are tied to Audio/Midi settings pertinent to each app.

Hope this helps.

My biggest complaint and why I still keep a powerful PC available, when Apple wants to strong arm it's users into using the latest OSX (even though 10.5.7 ***) and the latest machines, you can bend way over and kiss your wallet goodbye.

I would imagine Logic 9 would run fine on 10.5.5 but that OS is no longer supported so Apple will not include that info or let it be installed. It's guess it's the lack of choices that bothers me.

I am also annoyed by this.

There is really only three different desktop models, yet how many different ipod models are there?

For most people doing audio the imac and macmini don't really make sense because you're very limited in terms of drive space (unless you start the firewire daisy-chain nonsense). So the macpros are the only model that makes sense. Since these models are using the newest and greatest from intel, they are fairly expensive.

The lack of choice is bothering me too.

Ardenne, just a clarification: your signature states you are running Tiger, but I suppose you're on 10.5 since you have Logic 9 running. Is that correct?
It would be very cool not having to upgrade neither my G5 nor my OS, but that might be just a bit too much luck!

Same situation here. Ardenne, please clarify...
And thanks for the already wonderful news !

As much as I acknowledge the ability of Intel, I feel too there is still life left in the G5. When they were new, they were fast and sought-after. People got work done on them. They were workhorses. I used to love keeping up with the latest, etc. but I've since changed my thoughts on that. I still wanted to use some software that was not going to run well or at all on the Intel machines. Right now I didn't want the extra expense that would be required beyond the computer itself. Plus I started getting tired of spending money on new hard/software when the old was still working well. In my life with computers, it's been tens of thousands of dollars for gear that is now discarded. Technology as it marches on.

I was reminded that people made music for years on PPC and did it well. Still do. So after thinking long and hard on all the pros and cons of upgrading, I decided to buy new 1TB drives for my G5 instead. I re-installed everything from scratch, and have a separate new external for my samples on an eSata card. I did not reinstall all the system goodie junk I previously was using or little shareware stuff that was unnecessary. I left plenty of room on each drive. One drive Tiger, one Leopard. All I can say is this computer is now stable and fast. Things launch and operate instantly. It's a beautiful thing. A world of difference, and I'm going to do my best to keep it that way.

It seems with computers, there's a line where installing that "one last thing" tends to take it over the edge and then problems or sluggishness begin. That's one thing forcing one to upgrade, in addition to accommodating software. One day of course I will upgrade, but it's nice to get a little more use out of what I already have. There are those who need the intel so they should have one. But my work, and my work methods/track counts/VIs don't have a problem on the G5. Especially now. 🙂

I'm wondering if L9 seems to drag down the G5? I haven't seen anyone who's using it mention that. Now that I've eliminated the drag I previously was experiencing, I don't want to re-introduce it again, so I'm curious to know.
