Can't Repair Permissions

When I attempt to repair permissions, I get this message: First Aid failed....Disk Utility stopped repairing permissions on "Macintosh HD"because the following error was encountered: The underlying task reported failure on exit.
When attempting permissions repair using "Macaroni" I get this error message.
"Error detected while verifying/repairing permissions on disk0s2 Macintosh HD: The underlying task reported failure on exit (-9972)
Started verify/repair permissions on disk disk0s2 Macintosh HD
Error -9972: The underlying task reported failure on exit"
I used my Installation Disk to do a disk repair but it reported that
"the disk appears to be O.K"
I ran DiskWarrior but still can't repair permissions. Same error message.
What's up with all this?

I'm sure glad I found this thread. I had the EXACT same problem; permissions check failure and the empty receipts folder. Fortunately, I have a Time Machine backup and found that the disappearance occurred on Aug. 1st and I was able to restore it from the July 31st backup. Thank heaven 10.5.8 came out because I was trying to repair permissions in preparation for installing it. In another month or two the older backup would have been overwritten.

I wish I had some idea of what caused the receipts folder to empty itself...

I have the same problem on my iMac--my old one running OSX 10.5.6. The bar immediately moves about 15% of the way across and says "Less than 1 minute remaining", and then it sits there, never finishing.
When I click "Stop repair" it says "repair complete".
The reason that I am repairing permissions is that I have been having trouble booting up to a new internal drive I just installed, sometimes taking two or three tries before it boots. After it finally boots, everything seems ok.
