Original message text not included in forward or reply

Recently purchased a new MacBook Pro with 10.5.7. I had been using 10.4.11 on an old Powerbook G4. I did use the Migration assistant to move my files.

A problem I had been having for some time was that the original message text was not included in reply or forward (for some messages). It used to be that if I replied to the same message twice the original text would be included (very odd). I was hoping this would go away with 10.5, but the same thing is happening. Worse I can't get the original text to appear when replying (or forwarding). This does not happen with ALL messages, only some. I've tried all the different permutations in the settings under composing/responding and it makes no difference.

I would think that if this were common it would be fixed, because it is VERY inconvenient. However, I would really appreciate it, if anyone has some insight.

No go on the highlighting idea. Has no impact for me, regardless of whether I’m responding or forwarding.

I’ve been having the exact same problems reported here. Until recently, all replies and forwards included the original text. Now, it’s hit and miss. No pattern about who, what computer they’re sending from, which of my email accounts the message came to, email client used by the sender, etc. It’s very scattershot (well, with the exception of the fact it seems to target the messages I most need to function properly...Murphy’s Law...).

This is creating serious problems for me at work. Really hope someone from Apple is watching these threads and is willing to chime in with a solution. Am headed to the MacRumor forums next, where there’s usually much more timely response to urgent Apple-related matters.

Hi Ernie,

I realized that my last note was not clear. Those are the settings now (which I believed were the defaults).

I have tried checking the radio button for 'include selected text ...' as well as other permutations. It makes no difference. This does not occur for all e-mails. I can't tell if it is random or if there is something unique with the 'problem' e-mails.

I just tried checking 'include selected text ...'. Then, selecting all the text in a 'problem' e-mail and hitting reply. This DID include the text. So, I guess I might have a workaround although it would be nice if this worked properly without selecting everything.

If you have any ideas, let me know. Otherwise thanks for responding to my question.

Hi
I'm having the same problem - it seems to be mails from certain people.
One person it's always been fine and now on all his mails I don't seem able to include his original message in my reply - the only way i've figured out to do it is to use redirect but thats also not ideal as you don't get the date and time of the first message.... If I select the text, it does seem to work but I shouldn't have to do that.....
I have another person that this has been happening for a long time.
Could it be their settings?

Any ideas??

Thanks

Nairam,

I'm having the same problems with someone else in my office who uses Mail to send and reply to email. I currently use Entourage 2008 and ANYTIME he reply's to me, the original message never comes. Below his signature it says "On Oct 1, 2009, at 11:04 PM, Ned wrote:" I only noticed this when I started using Entourage. Does anyone know if this could be related to the issues you're having?

Hi, This issue relates to Apple Mail only include text that is highlighted when replying to a message. So if nothing is highlighted everything is included, if something is highlighted only this is included in the reply and if everything is highlighted again everything is included in the reply.

So a get around for the problem emails is to select all by clicking "Command A", this highlights all the text in the body of the email and it will be included in the reply.

I have the same issue with 1 person that emails me and have always just done the above. I have now been asked by a client for a solution, so will keep looking for a fix and reply back if and when I find one.

I'm having same problem... Mail inconsistently sends original text with my replies.

"Quote the text of the original message," & "Increase quote level," boxes are both checked; "Include all of the original message" radio button is on.

If anyone discovers a solution (thanks for work-a-round in meantime, C37), I'd love to know about it. Thanks!

I'm having this problem as well, and it did not go away in SL. Maybe it is related to the very last set of options in the Composing tab in Mail's preferences? Currently I have Mail set to "Include selected text, if any; otherwise include all text" when quoting text in replies or forwards.

(update)
Changing this setting seems to have helped me. Try the "Include all of the original message text" option in the Composing tab of Mail's preferences.

I noticed that often I was experiencing this problem when someone had sent an attachment. In reading the original message, I had clicked on the attachment icon to preview/open/save it, and it remained highlighted after I had completed that task. Subsequently, when replying to the sender, all it included was the filename of the attachment. Which, technically, is what I had told it to do.

Since I'm not upgrading to Snow Leopard until more of the bugs are worked out, and since this worked properly in 10.5.8 until recently, what is the fix for my current version?

If this was a result of a new update, it would be one thing, but this is a case of something having worked for ages, then suddenly numerous users are having the same problem as Mail fails to work with consistency.

Please advise with a solution for 10.5.8. Thanks!

Adding to my earlier email about missing text in replies and forwards, there appears to be yet another new twist. At least once or twice a day, when I click on an inbox (any of the inboxes for the various email accounts I use), none of the messages appear. Just one big, white, empty pane where there should be a list of emails sitting in the account.

Is anyone from Apple following this thread? Seems there are multiple problems with Mail that do not tie to settings, preferences, etc. Still have no intent of moving to Snow Leopard until the kinks are worked out, so please suggestion fixes that apply to 10.5.8.

Thank you!
