Can't send e mails using ntlworld server

Hi all,
I've been having probs with my gmail account on mail, so in an effort to fix this I deleted my accounts and set them up again.
Gmail works fine (though I still have the same issue), but NTL just won't send e mails.
I can receive ok, but it won't send.
I have checked my settings are as per http://www.virginmedia.com/help/email/troubleshooting/cant-send-mac.php

and they are all correct. It worked fine before I deleted everything.

does anyone have any ideas what I may have done wrong?

can someone tell me what authentication and ssl should be for definite?

Thanks for any help

set everything up again, but same issue.
Ernie, connection doc says the following:

GMAIL connection & login to server succeeded
NTL connection & login to server succeeded
GMAIL connection & login to server succeeded
NTL could not connect to the smtp server. Check your network connection and that you entered the correct information in the account preferences

appreciate u guys trying to help me 🙂

Genmac,

The info from gumsie for Connection Doctor would seem to confirm the SMTP should be presented on Port 25 with no Authentication (None) -- that is what No Login Required tells us -- only Port 25 will allow use without separate Authentication. However, for this to work, you must be connected at your home venue where NTL serves you -- use of such a SMTP requires authentication based upon the IP address on the modem they provide you.

More info, please.

Yes!!!

BT could only now be blocking the use of Port 25 to third party SMTP (something most ISP now do), which this one is, and since the one from NTL cannot be separately Authenticated, it cannot be presented on any other Port.

Major info for me to now realize that NTL is not your ISP! Keep in mind that I have not information as to whether BT will let you use this From address, but some ISPs will.

Without regard to anyone else specifically, when it comes to sending and using SMTPs, the relationship with each provider matters immensely. With every ISP trying to hold down SPAM, the way most of them have decided to do it, is by how they decide who they can trust to send a message over their connection -- they even worry about liability they might have if too open, and not alert to who is using their SMTP. The same goes with WiFi spots. So, it is with cable providers, who traditionally have authenticated (decided who to trust) their SMTP only by either reference to the Incoming server or the IP of the modem, that those customers with portable computers must find other ways to send and communicate by email when remote from home. This is the great attraction of Gmail, MobileMe, Yahoo, etc. Today you simply are not going to be able to use a non-authenticated SMTP when not directly connected to that provider, because almost everybody is blocking Port 25, and the other ports, such as 587 and 465, require the SMTP to be separately authenticated.

so that means I can no longer get my NTL e mail via mail? only on the web?

I understand the reasons, but don't understand that up until today it was working.

If only I hadn't deleted everything to try and solve the Gmail problem I wouldn't have this issue.
This is really disappointing, I need those e mails in my mail.

thanks for the info Ernie

No, you can continue to receive emails so long as NTL allows you. But using the NTL SMTP is not up to them, but to the policies of your new ISP, or anyone providing connection at other venues, such WifI. It is only the sending that suffers from the measure meant curtail SPAM.

It is up to BT whether you can send with the NTL address with the BT SMTP.
