Can't send e mails using ntlworld server

Hi all,
I've been having probs with my gmail account on mail, so in an effort to fix this I deleted my accounts and set them up again.
Gmail works fine (though I still have the same issue), but NTL just won't send e mails.
I can receive ok, but it won't send.
I have checked my settings are as per http://www.virginmedia.com/help/email/troubleshooting/cant-send-mac.php

and they are all correct. It worked fine before I deleted everything.

does anyone have any ideas what I may have done wrong?

can someone tell me what authentication and ssl should be for definite?

Thanks for any help

NTL is rubbish. I had trouble with them and put together this;
Description : Virgin Media, (Description of ISP account).
Email address : yourname@ntlworld.com
Full Name : yourname, (as you would want others to see it).

Incoming mail server : pop.ntlworld.com
Username : as per your email address, (less the ntlworld.com).
Password : ???, (the one you set up Virgin Media with).
Port 110
SSL : Off

Outgoing mail server : smtp.ntlworld.com
Password : ???, (the one you set up Virgin Media with).
Port : 25
SSL : Off
Authentication : None

Set the account up ignoring any errors along the way because you can easily go back and edit them afterward to match the info given above. Post back and let us know how it goes. Just in case you have one, NTL mail will not work with those outgoing settings on an iPhone.

Hi Gumsie,
You can say that again!
Thanks, I set it all up, but when doing the outgoing server it was spinning for about 15 mins and has just said the following:
The SMTP server "smtp.ntlworld.com' is not responding, try checking the network connection and that the server name is correct, otherwise the server may be temporarily unavailable, if you continue you might not be able to send messages"

I've stopped at this point lol

Took me ages to figure out NTL. What I do is, after set up go back into the accounts pane of Mail prefs.

Select the account in question, and make sure the Account information tab is to the front. +Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)+ should be written at the bottom.

Click the drop down and choose to +edit server list+. Select your NTL server and make sure that under *Account information* the info there resembles;
+Description: NTL+
+Server Name: smtp.ntlworld.com+

Also check that under Advanced the info there resembles;
+Use Default ports (25 465 587)+
+The SSL box is unchecked+
+Authentication: None+

Seriously NTL mail is flakey. I have resorted to getting another email addy too.

hiya,
I've checked all that and everything is fine..though under accounts and advanced is does have authentication and password in that box, but none when I go into the edit servers list part

when I go to send a message it spins on sending for ages and ages right now it's still trying.

I should have left it alone as it worked fine before, but I remember having a real hassle setting it up.

In Mail Preferences/Accounts/Account Information, click on the arrows beside the name of the SMTP, and choose Edit Server List. Remove all, or all but one any references to the NTL SMTP. Enter anew, or with the remaining server, click on the Advanced Tab there, and choose Use Custom Ports. Then enter the Custom Port to be Port 25, and set the Authentication to None, and have no entries in Username or Password. This assumes the earlier state specs saying the SMTP did not require Authentication.

Also click Use this server only. Now if the NTL SMTP server is online, it should work.

No problem. I just copied all of those settings from my mail account after sending a test mail so they should work.
though under accounts and advanced is does have authentication and password in that box

That'll be next to where it says Port 110 yes? That's the incoming server. What you can do to test that part is log in via webmail and send yourself a message. Immediately logout of webmail and start Mail, it should receive a message.
but none when I go into the edit servers list part

That's because you are now looking at outgoing servers and this is correct, port 25 - SSL off - Authentication none.
when I go to send a message it spins on sending for ages and ages right now it's still trying.

What you could do if you have the time I suppose is start from scratch. Delete the mail account and then delete all NTL related info from your keychain using Keychain Utility found in your Utilities folder. Log out and then in again and give it another go.
I should have left it alone as it worked fine before

You'll beat it don't worry.
but I remember having a real hassle setting it up.

Yup, me too. But persevere and if needs be get an additional email address from a different ISP. I use [Macace|http://macace.net>, it's not free but the service and performance is great.

when i custom the port to 25 it shows as offline and I get this error

aamtaout01-winn.ispmail.ntl.com connection refused from [86.159.209.80]

Select a different outgoing mail server from the list below or click Try Later to leave the message in your Outbox until it can be delivered.

the other error comes when I check default ports (which includes 25)

man this has taken me all day!!

No problem, the first time I set it up took me a while and a lot of messing around. Second time for my mum was not so bad, (that was when I made a note of the settings I gave you), third time for a friend went very smoothly.

I think a fresh start including the suggestion Ernie made of deleting all the unnecessary servers might be worth a try too. It will work in the end.

Can't think why you'd get this unless the port is wrong.

I would start afresh at this point. Delete all the servers, then the NTL accounts, then close Mail. Delete the appropriate keychains, log out and then in again and have another bash.
man this has taken me all day!!

Took me 4 hours to work it all out the first time.
