Canon Support for Snow Leopard

Canon has posted their support schedule for Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) for their consumer printers.

http://support-au.canon.com.au/contents/AU/EN/8200620400.html

It looks like if your product is a few years old then it is not advisable to purchase 10.6, or be ready to buy a new printer.

As for their business products, such as the imageRUNNER series, none of the current Canon printer drivers work on 10.6. Having been involved with the 10.6 seed testing I found that while the drivers appear to install okay, the creation of a network printer queue fails. This occurred with the following drivers.

CUPS PS v2.11
PS v1.81
UFR2 v1.80
Fax v2.20

So if you feel the need to update, then beware.

If your Canon device supports PostScript, then you can use either the Generic PostScript included with 10.6 or install the Canon PPDs so that you get some finishing options.

If your Canon device only supports a Canon proprietary protocol, such as UFR2, CAPT or GARO, then there is currently no solution for them with Mac OS X 10.6.

Hi Kismawan,

It sounds like you may not have configured the Job Accounting function in the driver. Open an application and select to print. Then change the menu to Special Features and press the Printer Info button. This will communicate with the printer and should activate the Job Accounting feature in the Special Features pane.

Now press the Settings button and enter your ID and password (if needed) in the ID/Password Settings pane. Now press the Verify button. This will confirm if the ID/Password entered is correct. If this doesn't work then something could be stopping the communication, such as the firewall or selecting Uni-directional during the creation of the printer queue.

If the verify ID/Password works, then leave the information in there and press OK. Now try printing.

Dear Pahu,

Thanks again for your prompt advice.
I already set up the Job Accounting, unfortunately cannot verify the ID.
I also checked with the Canon technician about the uni-directional or bi-directional setting on iRC2550i. Apparently it is already bi-directional communication setting.

Additional info, I could now do the printing via "direct printing" through Safari browser (direct communication with the machine), however it can only print PDF files.

According to Canon technician, there possibility some conflict between UFR2 and PS (Post Script) setting on the copier machine. Previously he added the PS onto the machine.
The technician also promised to visit our office this week for checking the machine. Hopefully it will work well, so that I can work more efficiently then. (So far my colleagues here keep using OS 10.5 and do not have intention to upgrade their OS yet).

Thank you so much for your kind advices.

I can't get the Canon MF 4680 to work across the network with Snow Leopard.

I have downloaded the Sept 4 drivers from Canon.
I have installed the drivers.
I have tried to install the printer using the "...more printers" option but, even thought the correct driver appears in the list and everything is ok, when I click the "add" button, the window won't close, like the add button doesn't work.
I have tried to install the printer using LPD. Print jobs submit fine and flash through the Print Manager window, but never actually print.

If you have any clues, I'd love to hear them.

Thanks,

Matt

Same problem for me. The UFR_II driver seems to only support IPv6. What I have learned is whenever apple has a major release, there are issues which make me regret upgrading (Last time (10.5) I had problems with X11). After installing 10.6, and found I could not print, I used time machine and restored to 10.5.x. I then installed 10.6 onto another hard drive, which I am using to vet 10.6.1 and drivers from canon. Once it appears functional there, I will upgrade my internal drive.

Why didn't Apple maintain compatibility with the previous print driver architecture?

Not true. The UFR2 driver supports IPv4. Unlike previous versions of the UFR2 driver, where you would select More Printers > Canon IP (UFRII), this v2.00 driver adds network printers via the Default browser view to connect to Canon IPv4 devices. It is only if you have a Canon device that supports IPv6, such as the iR3245, that you use the More Printers menu.

While Apple did introduce changes with the core printing system, it is not entirely their fault. If vendors like Canon had started to make changes to the drivers much sooner than this September a lot of this trouble could have been avoided. That said, it seems that some sections of the Canon company knew what changes were required, or at least cared about the Mac public. The inkjet devision had new drivers available within a week of Snow Leopards release, which may have actually been on time if Snow was released when it was supposed to. The copier section, who makes the UFR2 driver, seems to be dragging the chain, which is not helping the early adopters.

As you have said, similar issues occurred with the release of Leopard and it took a couple of updates before that version became stable. So it is not surprising it has happened again. Your method of installing on another drive is a good idea if you don't have a spare Mac like I have, and helps you continue using your Mac until this mess is sorted out...

I've been following this thread for the past week or so hoping there might be some help for me with my new Canon Multifunction MF4330d (Satera) printer that I bought here in JAPAN, which seems to be the equivalent of a US ImageClass MF4350d or something like it-- but I'm really not sure what driver to use with Snow Leopard. It's all way too confusing.

Automatically my system chooses a driver called "CARPS2 Printer" from installed drivers (this must have been what came with the device on the install CD); however, this driver is very generic and has several options disabled-- like the double-sided printing and scanning that are supposed to come with the printer. Also the quality of the print seems slightly "off." Good quality but not quite as good as I would expect from a high-quality printer, leading me to expect that there should be a more appropriate driver-- especially because I cannot use any print utilities with this machine either.

I tried downloading the new UFR II_V200_MacOSX_usEN driver posted to the Canon site at the beginning of this month, and I got excited because various features, like double-sided printing, etc., suddenly showed up in the dialogue box, but when I hit "Print," a notification came up that said that this driver was incompatible with my machine, and I was unable to print.

Do I have any options except to just wait for Canon Japan to get with the program and update their drivers appropriately?

I'm happy with a Japanese language driver if needed, though English would be nice. Automatically the print/fax preference pane chooses

The UFR driver is very precise with the models it supports. If your model or series of model is not listed as supported, then it will often give you the error you have witnessed regarding the compatibility. From what I have seen with this driver, this is not uncommon when you use a model for a region with a driver for another region. So I suggest you trash the UFR2 folder on your Mac and download the UFR2 driver for the Europe-Asian region. Looking at the readme for the UK English driver, the MF4320-4350 is listed as a supported model, so hopefully this will work for you.

To trash the current UFR2 driver, open Finder and navigate to HD > Library > Printers > Canon. You will see the UFR2 folder. Trash this and then empty the trash. Now you can run the installer for the UK English version which you can download from here...

http://www.service.canon.com.au/drivers/files/ir/osxufr2v200.zip

Note that when you select to Add the printer you may have two entries for your model, due to the previous US version being installed. make sure you select the one that shows 'Canon MF4320-4350 UFRII LT (UK)'.

Pahu, thanks so much for your very helpful advice-- I was wondering where I could find that UK driver... but alas, I'm afraid it's also incompatible, after uninstalling and reinstalling with the UK driver. The same incompatibility message comes up when I go to print, although the print dialogue box does allow me to put in various preferences-- very frustrating! Because the printer shows up as this protocol called CARPS, I'm guessing it's semi-proprietary for Japan... I guess I'll call Canon support here. Any other suggestions would be most appreciated, since I have to scan three books and make loads of double-sided copies for my students by the beginning of the university semester, and it's not looking good!

A quick update-- thanks for all your help. FYI Canon Japan says they are now testing the software for compatibility with Snow Leopard, but a new driver for the multifunction printer/scanner MF series (Satera) should be out within the next couple months. Meanwhile, I was able to download a driver that was compatible with 10.5.7 that does allow double-sided printing, etc. and some utilities (though not all)-- and that's what I need, so I think I'll be alright!

Hi Pahu --thanks for all the helpful notes. I fear my original post might have appeared a bit too melodramatic as we still haven't given the green light to Snow Leopard to anyone. Unfortunately a lot of our Mac Community here take it upon themselves to upgrade their Macs and such. We're just trying to get our users up and productive as best we can.

C5185 problem:
So for the Fiery/non UFR printers it looks like we're out of luck(unless I missed something) I have been instructing folks to run their apps in 32-bit mode in the interim. I have tried the h1.2 and 2.0 drivers, and of course the UFR2 for our main ir C5185. I didn't know if there was another driver to try (e.g., the earlier post about choosing model ir3080 in lieu of the missing ir2880 worked for us)

I still feel the need to blame Canon for this. SL and it's 64 bit environment has been well known for sometime. I expect a vendor that has a lucrative contract to be pro-active in working ahead to test these types of things out. Their driver page for each model has dozens of various drivers(almost a 100 for the 5185 model in this case) many of which don't apply. They are the only vendor (all Mac OS versions) that requires a tech to install their printer drivers. There is nothing helpful or intuitive about which driver version or type one should choose for their model. There are no posts, faqs or anything regarding driver updates for Snow Leopard or Macs. There are no forums, which is why so many of us are having to talk to a non-canon printer guru like yourself on another companies website to resolve. My vote is to hire you Pahu =) Thanks again.

For those of you having issues getting the imageRunner C1/C2 driven Cannons running, I found the fix.

First, install the imageRunner C1 or C2 driver for Leopard as usual.

Second, in Terminal, do the following:

sudo chown root /usr/libexec/cups/filter/fierycupsfilter

if prompted, type your password.

That's it. When you install the Fiery driver, it the fierycupsfilter file is incorrectly owned by your UID. Snow Leopard refuses to run CUPS filters unless they are owned by root.

Temp Workaround:

Hey guys, I noticed that a temp workaround for a lot of these printer woes wasn't clearly listed in this thread so in case anyone hasn't tried it here's the shortened version I sent to users initially:

The key apps that ship with Snow Leopard are 64-bit however not all of them are and maybe more importantly most third party apps aren't yet. So for example FireFox, Office 2008 are 32-bit apps and should still work with the prior 10.5 drivers. As a workaround for the 64-bit apps, you can have Snow Leopard open the app in 32-bit mode via the app info interface(Command-i) e.g. Safari & Mail

In our case, this is the workaround we're using for our big daddy C5185 H-1 until there is a RIP solution in our case. We did have some reports of folk's local Canon printers still being problematic, however in all but one case, the issue centered around not using the prior 10.5 drivers.

Canon reiterated to us yesterday that they don't expect to have H1 drivers for Snow Leopard until November...

It certainly sounds like the 64-bit issue outlined in the post above since you can print with 32-bit apps & ur problem apps are both 64-bit by default. If you installed Rosetta, I noticed you can enable Rosetta along with 32-bit mode so I would give that try as your printer may be legacy(u should specify).
I would try printing from TextEdit as well as this should utilize the least amount of the print driver's special features of the apps you mentioned & can run in either mode as well.

I managed to install the iR Series UFR II (US) driver on one machine that was connecting to a 3045 and running OS 10.6 and I used the Australian driver pack linked on page 11, but when I tried to install the same set of drivers on a 10.5 computer, it only showed the UFR II (UK) driver for the iR series. When I tried to use this driver on a iR3025, it only prints blank pages. Is the 3025 not supported by this driver? Why on 10.6 did I get the US and UK drivers, but on 10.5 only was able to get the UK driver? Does that even make a difference?
