Canon Support for Snow Leopard

Canon has posted their support schedule for Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) for their consumer printers.

It looks like if your product is a few years old then it is not advisable to purchase 10.6, or be ready to buy a new printer.

As for their business products, such as the imageRUNNER series, none of the current Canon printer drivers work on 10.6. Having been involved with the 10.6 seed testing I found that while the drivers appear to install okay, the creation of a network printer queue fails. This occurred with the following drivers.

CUPS PS v2.11
PS v1.81
UFR2 v1.80
Fax v2.20

So if you feel the need to update, then beware.

If your Canon device supports PostScript, then you can use either the Generic PostScript included with 10.6 or install the Canon PPDs so that you get some finishing options.

If your Canon device only supports a Canon proprietary protocol, such as UFR2, CAPT or GARO, then there is currently no solution for them with Mac OS X 10.6.

There is no UFR2 driver for the iRC3220. The iR7086 is supported by the UFR2 v2.00 driver, although according to the readme you do need to select 'Canon iR Series UFR II (UK)' in the Print Using menu.

Note that if both models have PostScript support (not sure if it is an option in your region) then you can add a printer queue using the Canon PPDs. This will get you printing and supports most finishing functions.

The only other thing to mention is that both models also have an imagePASS (Fiery) option, the C3220 uses a C2 and the 7086 uses the S2. If you have these controllers then the UFR2 driver cannot be used, neither can the Canon PPDs. In this case, you can use Generic PostScript, although there are some workarounds for the imagePASS drivers.

This week Canon listed a driver on the support page for my IR C 3170U. It is not a UFR II, but a PPD. I don't really know the difference.

Any advice about how to make this work - I tried the installation, but still get the same errors as always. The print job leaves my machine but gets an error at the printer.

I have the Canon Imageclass MF6590. I downloaded the 2.0 driver, and although its now in my list of drivers - when I go to print over the network I get ERROR -50. Does anyone know what that is?

For me, error -50 ALWAYS meant that i had to delete and re add the printer. ymmv

This is a long thread but I found someone else who was able to install an Imagerunner 1023, mine is 1023if. On the instruction sheet that printer is not mentioned as supported but in the manual it is mentioned. You have to follow full instructions. The installer does not launch until you quit ALL applications (as it says you should). It lets you chose your printer and the 1023if is there. It lets you set it up and, for me, important to print wirelessly and duplex.
I might add I was unable to find any mention of these drivers on the Canon website!
I am also quite disappointed that the much heralded "automatic" search by Leopard for things like prinetr drivers just doesn't work.

Hello Mr Donato. I found that the error -50 would occur if I selected the HP Jetdirect-Socket or IPP protocol. If you add the printer queue again, this time selecting LPD and entering a queue name of LP, the error should stop.

PPD stands for PostScript Printer Description. It is a file that describes additional features about a printer and is used for PostScript printer connections.

It would be handy to know what the error was at the copier. It could be related to a wrong protocol being used, a lack of PostScript support or due to the Department ID function (which the PPD does not support).

To check the error, go to the copier touch panel and press the System Monitor button in the bottom left corner. When the copier picture appears and its current state, press the Printer button on the bottom row and in the new screen press the Log button. Highlight the job that has failed from your Mac and press Details. The top of the screen will show the error code. Please reply with what this is.

We have the fiery based 3220 and I just got it to work under 10.6

1) I reinstalled the drivers from the disk (canon download also seemed ok)
2) Basic printing established by adding the LPD printer at the IP address and the print queue set to "print"
3) terminal command sudo chown root /usr/libexec/cups/filter/fierycupsfilter and password entered
4) Changed to PS print driver "Canon iR C3220-C1 PS Ver2.1" and set the finisher for our N2 saddle finisher

Now I can use all the printer features

I'm beginning to think of removing Snow Leopard because I seem to have lost more than I gained, with photostitch among the things gone!

Anybody know whether Canon intends to update this???

In case that hasn't been posted yet. I'm trying to use these drivers with a 10.5 machine and can't get them to work though.

I'm getting this:

*Canon UFR II Printer Driver*

The printer is not supported, or the printer information is not acquired correctly. If the printer is supported, check the printer connection, delete the printer, add it again, and acquire the printer informtaion on the Print dialog box.: 10322

The General Postscript Printer driver works fine though for printing. I just need the special features.

I will indeed confirm that 2.0 driver is not functioning for ImageClass MF4100 series mine's MF4122 SEAsia model, I can replicate the problem with multipage printing only printing the first page followed by a page full of black streak alternating with the same first page for the number of pages that I ordered to print,
I managed to get around with printing one page at a time, and with time I think I can concoct a script to get around that, but why should I?

I know not to put production machine with untested new software, but having seen that Canon managed to produce Windows 7 driver, the whole experience is beginning to sour, Having been a Canon camera user for over 20 years, I'd chosen Canon printers out of sentimentality more than anything else, I'm seriously considering giving up my Canon camera gear and boycotting Canon altogether

Having been a Mac user for a long time, suffering like a second-class user with thing not working or supported, although increasingly rare, is expected but in this day and age! Apple had given most developers ample time to adjust,

I just don't know what to think about company that seem indifferent to users' need.

Exactly. So much effort from so many well-intentioned people on workarounds deserves praise.

Unfortunately the fact is that Canon still do not support business users on Snow Leopard.

This is quite simply disgraceful. Shameful.

The sad part is that Canon themselves aren't ashamed of that fact. On my first two tech support calls to Canon Canada about my MF4270 and Snow Leopard, I was told point blank that most Canon ImageClass users are Windows users so I shouldn't expect full support for Mac with this product. All I kept thinking after that was why doesn't Canon just do us all a favour and completely drop Mac support instead of giving us half-@ss drivers and support.

Hello everybody, I've spent a few hours reading lots of topics about issue with Canon & HP printer on SL.

I'haven't seen anybody with the same issue I've met by a customer:

1) Install a new brand MacBook Pro with MacOS X 10.6.1
2) install UFR II Printer driver for use with a Canon LBP 5360 connected directly with USB.
3) test printing : OK !

But things goes wrong when :

1) unplugging and plugging back USB OR restarting the computer create SYSTEMATICALLY a new printer in the "Print & Fax" PrefPanes…

That means after 20 reboot I have 20 times the same Printer… LBP5360-1, LBP5360-2 etc…

I've of course, remove and re-install the driver 2.0 US; try with the UFR II 2.0 Fr(french), try with 1.8 (doesn't work at all!)

Has anybody any Idea ?
