Canon Support for Snow Leopard

Canon has posted their support schedule for Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) for their consumer printers.

http://support-au.canon.com.au/contents/AU/EN/8200620400.html

It looks like if your product is a few years old then it is not advisable to purchase 10.6, or be ready to buy a new printer.

As for their business products, such as the imageRUNNER series, none of the current Canon printer drivers work on 10.6. Having been involved with the 10.6 seed testing I found that while the drivers appear to install okay, the creation of a network printer queue fails. This occurred with the following drivers.

CUPS PS v2.11
PS v1.81
UFR2 v1.80
Fax v2.20

So if you feel the need to update, then beware.

If your Canon device supports PostScript, then you can use either the Generic PostScript included with 10.6 or install the Canon PPDs so that you get some finishing options.

If your Canon device only supports a Canon proprietary protocol, such as UFR2, CAPT or GARO, then there is currently no solution for them with Mac OS X 10.6.

Here in Japan my wife and I have three Canon printers between us, and she just saw Canon's official announcement that NONE of them will be supported in either Leopard or Snow Leopard !!! That's a tremendous investment down the drain. It's really disgraceful, because physically they all still work just fine. We purposely waited for a long time to upgrade to Leopard, because Canon has been notoriously slow to update their drivers all these decades, but finding out now that they refuse to update them at all -- it's infuriating.

It's small comfort but fortunately for me, I installed Leopard on a separate disk partition, thinking that I would migrate from Tiger gradually. Little did I know that I would end up not migrating after all.

Bye-bye Canon.

Would be helpful in case others read this to know what models you have.

It is unusual to read that all three are unsupported as Canon has made drivers for a reasonable number of printers, and there is also an additional number of printers supported by Gutenprint. I would guess they are using some form of Canon proprietary language, like LIPS or CaPSL, which was/is only sold in the Japanese market.

In case you missed ATC7's other post, he has been provided a workaround from Canon Canada that will get duplex printing working.

What you need to do is set the paper size to LTR (Print Area-Large) or A4 (Print Area-Large) depending on the paper size loaded in the printer. This will print the document correctly on both sides.

I tested it to my wife's MF4270 with 10.6.1 and now with 10.6.2 and it worked perfectly.

Thanks to ATC7 for his perseverance and to Canon Canada for letting me keep the MF4270 in the house...

Hello csj0045 and welcome to Apple Discussions.

Looking through the readme for the UFR2 v2.00 driver, there is no listing for the iR2830. But I have the UK English version of the driver. If you check the readme with your US English version of the same driver, you will see if the iR2830 is listed as a supported model. If it is not listed, then you may not have any success in getting this driver to work with your copier.

So, some options you may have...

1. If your model supports PostScript, then you can install the Canon PPDs (v2.80 is available on the Canon USA web site). This will get you printing and will support just about all of the finishing functions. The only issue is if you are using Department ID management. The PPD does not support this feature on the copier and therefore cannot be used if it is enabled and set to block unknown ID's.
2. If your model does not support PostScript, then you can select Generic PCL Laser Printer in the Print Using menu. This will get you printing but does not support all paper sizes or any finishing function. Still, it will save you having to revert back to Leopard while we wait for Canon to release updated drivers.

Ok, since I was one of the ones bashing Canon on this, it is only fair that I post how I was finally able to get our Canon iR C3380i printer to work under SL. Obviously YMMV, but hopefully this may be of some help to those with this or similar models that can't get it to print:
1. Download both the URF1.8 and URFIIv2 updates from Canon (sorry I don't have a link, but it has been posted several times in this thread).
2. UNINSTALL both the 1.8 and v2 updates rather than installing. I don't know if you need to uninstall both, but I did and it seemed to work. This should clear out any old drivers you have from pre-SL and start from a clean slate, so to speak.
3. Install 1.8, and it will ask for a reboot, let it do so. Then install URFII v2.0 driver, then the latest Canon PPD.
4. Add the printer as Pahu has recommended several times - go to the Printer pref pane, hit the + button to add a printer, click the IP button, enter your printer's IP address, "LP" for queue (not sure if this is important). Then name and location as you want. For Print Using, select to install from your own software. Then type IR, URF, or some combination of letters to help filter the list down. Then select Canon iR C Series URF II (US) as the driver. Choose the options you have installed (it may not list all of them, this is just the generic driver), then save.

You should be able to print, albeit without all the printers options. In my case Quality doesn't have nearly as many choices as before, but it has the most important ones (b/w, color, two sided printing, etc).

Hope this helps any of you with a 3380i get going again until Canon updates the driver properly.

I am having an issue with a Canon iR5065. The queue is hosted on a Windows 2003R2 server. I've got some new SL systems that I need to be able to print to it.

All Clients are running 10.6.2.
All Clients have the UFRII (US) drivers installed and printer options configured.
Under Job Accounting I am not able to verify the ID and Password. When printing I see a job touch the queue on the server but its a Remote Downlevel Document which is 20bytes in size. There are no errors logged on the server and the user authenticates for access to the queue fine. The client system get's the following message:

"Canon UFR II Printer Driver
An error occurred.: -50"

I've tried reinstalling the drivers, rebooting, removing and re-adding the printer and I always get the same results. Am I stuck waiting for updated drivers or have I missed something in the 17 pages of posts?

Hello and welcome to Apple Discussions.

You haven't missed anything - your setup hasn't been covered in this thread.

The Job Accounting function of the Canon UFR2 OS X driver cannot be used when connecting via a Windows queue.

In order for the Windows clients to use Job Accounting (aka Dept ID management) a service needs to be installed and running on the print server known as Canon DIAS. This permits the bidirectional communication between the client and the imageRUNNER for the purpose of verifying the ID and pwd. The DIAS service does not support the Mac UFR2 or PS driver, or maybe its the other way around. In any case, you will not be able to verify the ID/pwd on the Mac driver.

Actually I am surprised that the setting is visible. Normally for it to make the Job Accounting button appear in the Special Features menu the driver has to communicate with the copier. Just enabling the setting in the Driver menu of the Options & Supplies pane does not make the option appear. The driver has to talk to the copier and with a Windows server sitting between the Mac and the printer this would not occur.

So, if support for Dept ID is required, then your only option is to have the Mac printing directly to the iR. And when you create the network print queue on the Mac, ensure you select LPD for the protocol. If you select HP Jetdirect-Socket you will get the -50 error also.

Greetings from Copenhagen, Denmark. First of all thank you all in this thread for giving support on this issue.

Now, I've been reading the whole thread - 'cause just like xyxy123xy (on page 8, same problem I have) and others I own a MF4320n - and it's impossible to get to work under SL. I've tried all the good advices in this thread, but nothing seems to work. The other day Apple released new drivers, but that didn't help either <sigh>

So this is just a (last?) desperate cry: how do I get a Canon MF4320n to work under SL?

Hello Dr. Wishbone.

I have an MF4380dn and it is working fine with the Canon UFR2 v2.00 driver. What problem are you having exactly?

Note that Canon USA has just released an updated UFR2 driver, v2.05. Those that were reporting problems with the v2.00 driver have reported that the v2.05 has resolved those problems. Hopefully it will not be too much longer before a UK English version of the driver will be available soon.

Greetings from Nara, Japan

Thanks to all the fabulously savvy folks here and appreciation for all your help and advice.

Much less Snow Leopard, I'm still trying to find a workaround for abandoned Canon support on Leopard!

I have a Canon LBP-2410 that won't print from my G5 tower since I upgraded it from Tiger to Leopard. The Canon merely shoots out unprinted paper. Luckily, I put Leopard on a separate partition and retained Tiger on the tower, so it's not like I'm totally shut out, but I'd like to be able to move on and use Leopard one of these days.

Hello PAHU,

Thank you kindly for responding. The MF4320n do show up in Preferences/Print & Fax, but the problems are:

1. When I try to do a simple print, this message pops up:

Canon UFR II Printer Driver
The printer is not supported, or the printer information is not aquired correctly. If the printer is supported, check the printer connection, delete the printer, add it again, and aquire the printer information in the Print dialog box.: 10322

The MF4320n is connected via the original Canon cable to my Time Capsule and from there the printer connects by Airport to the MacBook Pro.

2. MF4320n is a multifunctional machine - but I cannot find out how to get access to any kind of interface for scanning etc. - ???

I'm really rather frustrated, as this just bought machine seems to be a real beauty - duplex printing and all. Hope it can be fixed somehow.
