Canon Support for Snow Leopard

Canon has posted their support schedule for Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) for their consumer printers.

http://support-au.canon.com.au/contents/AU/EN/8200620400.html

It looks like if your product is a few years old then it is not advisable to purchase 10.6, or be ready to buy a new printer.

As for their business products, such as the imageRUNNER series, none of the current Canon printer drivers work on 10.6. Having been involved with the 10.6 seed testing I found that while the drivers appear to install okay, the creation of a network printer queue fails. This occurred with the following drivers.

CUPS PS v2.11
PS v1.81
UFR2 v1.80
Fax v2.20

So if you feel the need to update, then beware.

If your Canon device supports PostScript, then you can use either the Generic PostScript included with 10.6 or install the Canon PPDs so that you get some finishing options.

If your Canon device only supports a Canon proprietary protocol, such as UFR2, CAPT or GARO, then there is currently no solution for them with Mac OS X 10.6.

Hi r_dizzle,
No, I keep hoping Canon will fix PhotoStitch, but it's not sounding very likely. We've also got an HP printer, and it comes with a stitching software that I've been using. It will only do a single line of photos, and there is no possible tweaking, but it's working okay. The other alternative is to run Autostitch trial in Bootcamp. I've tried Hugin repeatedly, but it crashes every time.

The US site has posted the driver under some of the MF consumer models. This <a href'http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&tabact=Downl oadDetailTabAct&fcategoryid=335&modelid=17405>link is to the MF4370dn. If you change the Drivers menu to OS X you will see the link to the UFR2 v2.05 driver.

Hello Dr. Wishbone.

In reply;

1. This message will appear if you have the printer connected via USB to the Time Capsule. I am not sure what you mean by the original Canon cable, my new MF didn't get shipped with a cable so maybe this is a local value-add. But if it is a USB cable, then this is one cause of the error you are getting.

Since your model also has an Ethernet network port, then I suggest you connect it to the Time Capsule via Ethernet. This will let you add the printer as a networked device (use LPD for the protocol and a queue name of LP). This connection method will avoid the error you are currently getting and allow you to print.

2. Canon have made a scanning driver available for the MF4300 series that will work on OS X. You can download the driver via this link. However I believe the utility is designed for direct USB connection. I don't think it works across a network and it certainly cannot be used when you have the Mac connected to the USB port of the Time Capsule.

I have been running a MF4250d for several months without issue on a 24" iMac, direct USB connection and Leopard (10.5) using all functions. Then I updated to Snow Leopard (10.6) and had some difficulties at first, but finally got it working fully again. Then a few weeks ago, I started getting the same error that others have mentioned here regarding the printer is not compatible... The only thing that I can figure was when I updated Snow Leopard to 10.6.2. I didn't catch it right away so I couldn't time machine back to confirm it. I have been pulling my hair out uninstalling and reinstalling many different ways to no avail. Then I saw Canon post the UFRII 2.0.5 driver this week and thought finally they fixed it. No dice! It still gives the same error and I removed ALL old Canon drivers rebooted etc. with no help. If I double click on the printer and go to the Utility page it opens a dialogue and says initializing but then hangs and comes back with a window saying printer is not responding. However, if I unplug it then the printer disappears from the list so I know the connection is being made. The driver is absolutely at fault because I can print from Windows 7 under Parallels no problem with all functions available. Apple and Canon really should tackle this problem quickly since they have been unofficial partners for a long time. The printer is a great product, but switching to Windows so I can print is beyond ridiculous. If anyone else has luck with the new UFRII 2.0.5 driver please share how you did it. Meantime we should all continue to contact Canon for a fix. Mac customers should be an important and growing part of their business especially with the current economic issues around the world.

Good luck,
Asenna

Must be something about your setup. I have an MF4270 at home and printing from 10.6.2 with the UFR2 v2.00 driver. I'm not getting anything like the message you have. I understand you thinking Canon should fix this but if they also are not getting the error then it is pretty difficult for them to fix. Your best option would be to take a grab of the error, get a copy of the cups error log and a copy of your system profile and send it to your local Canon consumer support so they can escalate to Canon INC.

I am not sure what it could be in my set up PAHU. I have not changed anything hardware or software wise except the OS X updates. It was working fine one day and then not the next. I can print to my Samsung laser and Epson inkjet no problems. All are hooked up directly with USB. I even swapped the USB cable between the Samsung and MF4350D with no help. I have been a mac owner and power user since 1984 so I am very familiar with my computers and OS X. Also, please don't discount the fact that it prints fine from the same set up with Windows/Parallels so I know all the hardware is fine. It comes down to the driver. Having uninstalled EVERY piece of Canon printing software and going back with their new 2.0.5 driver with no fix it seems like they still have some work to do. I have seen several posts on here that have the same issue as me and outside forums as well. Their is absolutely something wrong with the Canon driver combined with Snow Leopard. I booted from an external with 10.5 installed and it worked. Still need a solution.

Thanks,
Asenna

I understand what you are saying. But I'm just trying to put some perspective to the post. If the driver was solely responsible, then surely everyone with a Canon device that uses this UFR2 driver would be having issues. I have another MF at work (4380) and several models of imageRUNNER devices that all support the UFR2 driver. All Mac's (there's over a dozen in the office) that were printing fine with 10.6.1 are still printing fine after the 10.6.2 update. And this is with the v2.00 driver.

Anyway, none of this resolves your issue. Something must have changed with the 10.6.2 update for your Mac that is impacting the operation of the driver. The UFR2 is a nasty piece of work at the best of times. Its reliance on communicating with the printer to determine a suitable driver has rendered it incompatible with some many 3rd party print servers - even Airport. These types of connections cause the same message you see, an inability to determine the model and use of the Printmonitor. Maybe the .2 update has impaired that bidirectional communication that is needed and hence the same error message. But then I ask why has it only impacted a select few?

So, as I said, the more information you can provide Canon the easier it will be for them to investigate and hopefully resolve your issue.

Hi Rory,

If you have the PostScript option with the iR6570, then you can use the Canon PPDs to print from 10.6. If you want to check that you have PostScript in the 6570, go to the copier and press the Additional Functions button. Then on the touch panel, press the Printer Settings button. Scroll through the menus. If you see an entry of PS, then you have PostScript.

Hi,
I'm facing the same problem on my Canon CLC-1110... your solution seems to have been effective at your end. May I please request you explain me how to go about implementing it. Where do I key in all these codes?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Using the 'lpstat' command:
~ $ lpstat -t

Yielded this result:
Filter "/usr/libexec/cups/filter/fierycupsfilter" for printer "ColorPass" not owned by root

:~ root# chown -R root:wheel /usr/libexec/cups/filter/

Open up the Terminal application then type the following (you can copy and paste the following text)

sudo chown -R root:wheel /usr/libexec/cups/filter/

Now press the Enter key.

This will prompt you for your admin account password. If you only have one account on the Mac then it is your normal password.

Type in the password and press Enter.

Now you can exit out of Terminal and try printing again.
