Canon Support for Snow Leopard

Canon has posted their support schedule for Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) for their consumer printers.

http://support-au.canon.com.au/contents/AU/EN/8200620400.html

It looks like if your product is a few years old then it is not advisable to purchase 10.6, or be ready to buy a new printer.

As for their business products, such as the imageRUNNER series, none of the current Canon printer drivers work on 10.6. Having been involved with the 10.6 seed testing I found that while the drivers appear to install okay, the creation of a network printer queue fails. This occurred with the following drivers.

CUPS PS v2.11
PS v1.81
UFR2 v1.80
Fax v2.20

So if you feel the need to update, then beware.

If your Canon device supports PostScript, then you can use either the Generic PostScript included with 10.6 or install the Canon PPDs so that you get some finishing options.

If your Canon device only supports a Canon proprietary protocol, such as UFR2, CAPT or GARO, then there is currently no solution for them with Mac OS X 10.6.

well looks like I am out of luck. At least for the mf4350
Dear Brian:

Thank you for writing to us. We value you as a Canon customer and
appreciate the opportunity to assist you.

Unfortunately we don't support printing via the airport extreme the port
is not recognized, you most directly connect to usb onboard computer.

Please let us know if we can be of any further assistance with your
Canon Product.

Thank you for choosing Canon.

I got both my iR5185 and iR3035 working thank goodness.
Downloaded the following file for my 5185
http://downloads.canon.com/cpr/software/imagerunner/UFRIIv2.00MacOSX.zip

First I deleted all of my existing Canon iR devices from my printer list.

then Opened the UFR II installer app

I chose Uninstall, and watched as my /Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/en.lproj directory was depleted of Canon cruft.

After receiving the uninstall was successful message (may need to close finder view of en.lproj to get uninstall successful only instead of ...some files blah... msg)

Then I choose simple install.

After the UFR install completion (no restart unlike previous UFR Installers) I first added the iR 5185 which this driver said was compatible. In Print Fax chose IP-->LPD-->ipAddress-->Gave it a recognizable name, and choose the Select software then down to "iR 5185 UFR II (US)" -- Prints!

Now the iR 3035, which was not on its compatible list, followed the same as above, but chose the stock reading "iR Series UFR II (US)" --Prints!

To recap, the "More Printers" option of UFR II installers before no longer works, unless perhaps you have an IPv6 network (Dunno didn't test) but the IP-->LPD-->Printers IP address does the job. There are generic iR selections for both the color and the black and white machines, if yours doesn't appear under the select software option.

Best of Luck.

Hello PAHU

In reply:

On the cable connection:
My MF4320d only has one port, namely one fitting the smaller end on a cable like this. So I do not understand what you mean, when you say that it's using an USB-cable that causes problems? This has left me somewhat bewildered indeed - actually to a degree where I visited to my cable dealer and asked for a cable from a printer port to a net port on Time Capsule. "No such thing exists," was the answer. I think I misunderstood something, and cannot get on with solving this particular part of the problem...which leads me to the other issue:

On the USB vs. Ethernet/LPD/LP
I do not understand this. Usually I do not need an IP adress or Ethernet just to connect my printers - at least not that I know of (here exposing my lack of knowledge in this area - I surpose). I guess it's straight foreward once you've seen it done - but I do not know how to do this. I can get the printer to show up in the Printer area in Preferences - but that's all. Where do I find my printers IP-address? Where is the LPD and LP functions - and what do they mean?

On scanning
I do know, however, that it's not possible to scan via a multifunctional machine connected via Airport. When I have to scan I have to plug in directly to MacBooks USB - but I can live with that.

As long as I get my long missed printer opportunity back.

PS. There is no fax/phone on this machine.

Hello Dr Wishbone.

Yes, there is definitely some misunderstanding here so lets see if can make things clearer.

First of all, thanks for letting me know you are using a USB cable. Some models of MF also have support for Ethernet so I wasn't sure which cable you were referring to to - especially when you said it was the original Canon cable - they don't supply cables with their machines here in Australia.

So, since you have the printer connected via USB cable to the Time Capsule you will not be able to use the Canon UFR2 driver. It will give you the error you are getting now. This is due to a limitation of the UFR2 driver and the Airport USB port. As far as I know, no solution exists for this. You simply cannot use this printer (any MF series for that matter) when it is connected to the USB port of the Airport.

With regards to the LPD comment, I apologise for misleading you. I thought I read that your MF4320 had an Ethernet port. But on checking the link you provided I can see now that this is not the case. Therefore please disregard my Ethernet workaround.

Hello PAHU,

OK, thanks a lot for clearing that up. My own fault that I bought a machine, that doesn't connect via Airport - though I must say, my confidence in Canon products exists no more. A company, that sells a machine claiming it works under OS X conditions, and it then shows up it doesn't work at all with the for years wellknown OS X wireless network Airport, is in my opinion an untrustworthy company. Other producers of printers do actually deliver this obvious software quality. Also the behaviour of Canon on this matter described earlier in this thread is....well, not satisfying to say the least. Exit Canon.

And enough of that - I will go on and connect the printer directly - have an idea, that might make it work after all:

I just bought an iMac i5 (to be delivered December 16). I'll connect the Canon Multifunctional directly to the iMac i5, and the i5 wireless to Time Capsule. I'm wondering if I will be able to print wireless from my MacBook via TimeCapsule/iMac/Canon.

I doubt it's possible 😉 - but of cause it will be tested once I have the wonderfull i5.

Thank you again.

Thanks Pahu... im just shooting in the dark i suppose... If you find out that anything has developed that makes the C3170U work please let me know.

IDK if it supports PPD or otherwise, i've tried creating post script/ppd printer queues but the printer just beeps and says Error PC Load Letter (jk- it does beep and say error tho)

My runnign theory is that it only suports UFRII. I'm about to purchase a bunch of computers that now have to run 10.5 bc canon dosent update their drivers ugh.

Anyway, thanks for your help. I'll be monitoring this thread and the canon website, just to test my sanity.

Hoping someone might have some ideas. Upgraded the MacBook Pro to SL and now can't find any printer drivers for my MP140.

Before it was working fine via an AE but the AE has gone now and any attempt to direct connect using USB is a massive FAIL.

I've stripped out the old printer drivers, installed MP140 Series 101 package and nothing. Deleted those and installed the MP140 Series 102600 and nothing. Deleted those and installed the CanonPrinterDrivers.dmg and still nothing.

The CIJAutoSetup tool crashes on launch and nothing appears in either network or USB when I select Canon iJ Printer Utility.

MP Navigator also can't communicate with the scanner.

I've also installed Rosetta (just in case) and run System update.

Anyone have any ideas pleas? Not much English speaking tech support available here in Thailand.

Here for information is the reply I received from a Canon UK support engineer after enquiring about SL ImageRunner support:

------
Official Snow Leopard support for English language drivers I think is
sometime this month, otherwise Jan 2010..

If it is very urgent I might be able to get the .ppd but there will not
be any official support for it until launch...
------

So maybe not much longer to wait.
