Canon Support for Snow Leopard

Canon has posted their support schedule for Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) for their consumer printers.

http://support-au.canon.com.au/contents/AU/EN/8200620400.html

It looks like if your product is a few years old then it is not advisable to purchase 10.6, or be ready to buy a new printer.

As for their business products, such as the imageRUNNER series, none of the current Canon printer drivers work on 10.6. Having been involved with the 10.6 seed testing I found that while the drivers appear to install okay, the creation of a network printer queue fails. This occurred with the following drivers.

CUPS PS v2.11
PS v1.81
UFR2 v1.80
Fax v2.20

So if you feel the need to update, then beware.

If your Canon device supports PostScript, then you can use either the Generic PostScript included with 10.6 or install the Canon PPDs so that you get some finishing options.

If your Canon device only supports a Canon proprietary protocol, such as UFR2, CAPT or GARO, then there is currently no solution for them with Mac OS X 10.6.

Hi PAHU, Thx for your reply,

I've done what you told me, but still the same.

I cannot add the printer neither usb or wireless connection.

When I try to add the printer via usb connection I got an error message.

Something like: an error has happened when trying to add the selected printer. Connection refused.

I dont know what to do.

Thanks

Hello Adam,

With the v2.05 driver, you do not add the printer via More Printers. As you have seen when using this method, only IPv6 devices such as the iR3245 series is available.

So for IPv4 devices like your iR2016i, you will need to add the printer queue by selecting IP > Line Printer Daemon-LPD for the protocol. You can then enter the IP address of the copier and a queue name of LP. In the Print Using menu, you can select "Canon iR Series UFR II (US)" for the model.

Hello Adam,

It is unusual that the UFR2 driver would fail under 10.5.8. However, the previous v1.80 is still supported by 10.5.8, so I suggest you trash the UFR2 folder on the 10.5.8 Mac and run the v1.80 installer.

The UFR2 folder is located in HD > Library > Printers > Canon. Before trashing this folder, remove the current print queue you have for the printer in Print & Fax. Then you can trash the UFR2 folder and then empty the trash. With the v2.05 driver removed you can then run the v1.80 installer.

If the UFR2 v1.80 driver fails to print, then I suggest you try another printer language as a test. The iR2016 also supports PCL5e printing language. So, try creating another print queue, this time selecting 'Generic PCL Laser Printer' for the Print Using model. If this also fails, then I suspect there is something else about your machines setup that we have not thought of yet.

thank you for the prompt reply. the 1.80 driver had worked like a champ under 10.5.x so that was never an issue. when i couldn't get the 2.05 driver working under OSX 10.6, i figured i'd give 2.05 a try on my 10.5.8 rig to see if 10.6.2 was the sole problem.

so the bottom line is i am still out of luck for printing to an IR 2016i under 10.6.2

Hi, I recently got a Macbook Pro 5.3 to replace my Macbook from 2 years ago. Our Canon C3380 does not have PS and I have had the Apple tech and Canon tech on the line trying to figure how to print. Your comment about the UFR II 2.05 driver sounds like trying, but I get an error message "incorrect ID or password". Our printer does have job accounting but my previous Mac/Driver prompted me for an ID and Password, this Mac/Driver does not. What am I missing?
