Canon Support for Snow Leopard

Canon has posted their support schedule for Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) for their consumer printers.

http://support-au.canon.com.au/contents/AU/EN/8200620400.html

It looks like if your product is a few years old then it is not advisable to purchase 10.6, or be ready to buy a new printer.

As for their business products, such as the imageRUNNER series, none of the current Canon printer drivers work on 10.6. Having been involved with the 10.6 seed testing I found that while the drivers appear to install okay, the creation of a network printer queue fails. This occurred with the following drivers.

CUPS PS v2.11
PS v1.81
UFR2 v1.80
Fax v2.20

So if you feel the need to update, then beware.

If your Canon device supports PostScript, then you can use either the Generic PostScript included with 10.6 or install the Canon PPDs so that you get some finishing options.

If your Canon device only supports a Canon proprietary protocol, such as UFR2, CAPT or GARO, then there is currently no solution for them with Mac OS X 10.6.

Hello Realtor Tommy and welcome to Apple Discussions.

Normally you would need to enable the Job Accounting setting in the driver. To do so, you have to select to print something with the Canon UFR2 queue selected, and then select the Special Features menu. Here you can press the Printer Info button (located under the image of the copier) which forces the driver to communicate with the printer and update the driver settings. The new pane that appears after pressing Printer Info shows what features are enabled in the copier. Click the OK button and now you should see the Job Accounting button in this Special Features pane.

Now, the above is the process for most models of Canon imageRUNNER. But, the iRC3380 is not listed as a supported model with the UFR2 v2.05 so you therefore have to select the generic "Canon iR C Series UFR II (US)". In doing so, this stops the above procedure from being available.

So, the only thing you can do is change the Dept ID Management setting in the iRC3380 to 'Allow Unknown IDs'. This will let you print from the Snow Leopard Mac but of course will not provide the administrators any way to control your usage or for you to enter a job code (depending on what you are using Dept ID Management/Job Accounting for).

Thanks PAHU, Is there any hope the UFR driver will be updated to support the C3380 and SL? Or PCL driver? I have worked with computers for over 30 years and do not understand why they still have so much trouble communicating. Very frustrating.

How's the weather? The local newspaper used to include pictures of people laying on the beach in Australia about this time of year.

I don't know. It does look like Canon has drawn a line in the sand and stopped supporting models that are only a few years old. This is the case with the UFR2 and the PS driver, although I hear they are making another PS driver that will support the 'legacy' models, which is of no help to you. And they have never made a PCL driver for Mac.

It certainly doesn't look good when they release drivers for a multitude of consumer inkjets, some which are over 5 years old, and yet they cannot produce a driver for an expensive office product.

It's been hot. We had 42 the other weekend (107 F) 😟 . Beaches were certainly crowded that day...

Hi Pahu,

I have a Canon C4080 with an Imagepass H1 PS Ver2.0 controller. I installed CWS 5.1 and installed the Fiery OSX 10.6 update.

I have the unable to access "full properties" issue. My workaround is to send the job to the queue and open it up CWS if needed. This is mainly a problem when printing saddle-stitched booklets.

Is the best I can get at this point? What's the current status of Snow Leopard support?

Thanks,

Drew

Hi, I could use some help. I can add the printer and print to it via USB, but if I disconnect the USB and try to add it via the wireless, the printer never shows up.

This is using the Canon MF4600 Series (UFRII LT) driver.

Also, if I try Printer Setup > Utility > Open Printer Utility, it says: "Cannot monitor this printer with the current connection."

Any ideas? Thanks!

Hello Robert,

You cannot use the UFRII LT driver when the printer is connected to the USB port of an Airport device. This is a limitation of the UFRII driver.

If your model has an Ethernet port as well as USB, then you can connect this Ethernet port of the MF to the Ethernet port of the Airport. This will require setting an IP address into the MF, which may occur automatically, and once this has happened you can then create a printer queue to the printer using IP > LPD.

Maybe I wasn't clear. Here's the config:

Canon MF-3480dn printer connected both via USB and ethernet directly to my Macbook. Why both connections? ETH to print through my network and USB to use the scanner (since there's no a network card for the scanner), no Airport device and or USB hub, just a direct connection, but no way to scan. Previously when I had Leopard the scanner worked correctly.

Yep, you certainly were not clear about your setup and what you have is different to the other posts. In fact, you should really be starting a new thread. This would make it easier for others with the same setup and problem as you...

So, to your problem. AFAIK there is no MF3480dn. I assume you mean a MF4380dn? Now, with this model, there is an MF ScanGear v1.15 available. This can be used with the device connected via USB or networked with Image Capture. I would assume this is what you were using on Leopard, albeit an earlier version, since this is the only way you would have been able to scan with this device.

Here is a link to an updated version of the software.

Note that the network card in the machine supports both the printer and scanner. There is no separate network card needed just for the scanner.

Canon has released a v2.06 driver for your model. But this version has added no new function over the previous v2.05 driver. The v2.05 was able to print from all cassettes and the stack bypass. It was also able to print two-sided, staple and make booklets.

Do you get the option to select the stack bypass but it does not print from this tray. Or can you not select the stack bypass in the print menu's?

Is there a schedule for ImageClass Color Laser Printers (all-in-one)? I an't tell you how annoyed I am to find that this printer, which has "Mac compatible" symbols all over it, doesn't have a driver for 10.6.2. we are encouraged continually to update software to stay on top of the wave. Why do it? Neither Apple nor Canon seem to hold up their end. Now I have to re-pack this beast up and return it. What a pain.
