Unbelievable - New Mail sound still not working in Snow Leopard
The bug was in 10.5.x but it is still not fixed in Snow Leopard. When there is a new mail on an IMAP account there is no mail sound. Sound for incoming mails is selected (I can even hear it when I select it in the menu) and the volume of my Mac is on - but no sound.

Hey Ernie-
I was using tiger. But now I really like the push effect of USE IDLE COMMAND. But you are right, disabling does bring back sounds. Is this a bug that will be fixed or a third party plug in? Why do only some people experience the lack of new mail sound.
Thanks Ernie.
Not all IMAP servers support Push mail, so with those that don't and those where people are not using IDLE Command, it works. I cannot say whether some servers return any messages during the check for new mail despite use of IDLE or not, but if so, that might trigger the alert.
Thanks for the suggestion Ernie. I just tried it but it doesn't appear to work. Anybody else found another way to work? (This sounds like a question that's been asked wayyyy back..)
Does Mail remain open after launching? The New Mail alert has not been working for most of us on the initial check for new mail, but then does on subsequent cycles of checking if left running in the background.
More info, please, including whether you have other than IMAP accounts?
i have 2 imap accounts (one is gmail, and the other is my university account). i disabled "use IDLE command if server supports it" for both. then i used my gmail account in mail to send a mail to my university account. waited a few seconds, and the usual number 1 in a red circle appeared. but no sound! i set my sound to glass and i turned up my volume so i would most definitely hear it.
do you recommend i send another mail again after a while?
to your first question, yep my mail was open, because i sent a mail from one account to the other using mail itself. is the sound not supposed to occur if the window is open?
Ernie- I have aol, gmail, macmail all running- did exactly what you suggested and it works on BOTH of my computers. I disabled the IDLE command. But I really hope APPLE fixes this annoying bug so we can have both-- PUSH like mail on IMAP and SOUND.
I was actually having the same issue with no alert sounds from Mail after upgrading to 10.6. I did some poking around system preferences and discovered that my Alert Sounds had been turned all the way down. It is possible that the setting reset during Snow Leopard installation. I would suggest double checking your alert volume. After I turned the volume up, it worked!
System Prefs > Sound > Sound Effects > Alert Volume
I encountered this problem for the first time today. I spent a half hour trying to figure out why I couldn't get sounds. I was able to get sound working again after I performed the following actions:
Mouse over to the left of the mail window where your mailboxes are located.
Right Click and select "Get Account Info".
From here I just started clicking around, didn't change any settings though.
Once I closed out of that window my sounds were back.
It was the strangest thing, I'm not certain whether or not this was just a coincidence, because there is certainly nothing technical about my remedy, but it's the only thing that seemed to work for me tonight, so I thought I'd post it.
Does anyone know how to make it so the little number disappears next to the folder marked "All Mail" and "Spam", as I only check messages in the folder labeled "Inbox". I swear before today the number only showed up next to "Inbox" and not the other gmail folders.
As I said earlier, I am not at all sure it can be fixed, since the new email alert comes at the completion of the check for New Mail. With Push mail that is not taking place at the same time. Would take something wholly separate from the alert for New Mail to accomplish, I think.
