HP Device FAQ

OK, it looks like I need to get this started if nothing else to head off questions. So that being said without further ado here goes. And I will try to keep this thread updated over the coming days.

=====

Question: Where can I find the latest print/scan/fax drivers for my HP device?

Answer: All of the latest drivers as of this point in time are included on the Mac OS X 10.6 DVD. As of right now you will not find anything newer on HP.com. There are three ways to get the drivers, all relatively simple.

1) Install the OS with your device connected - if the installer sees you have an HP printer it will install drivers for your HP printer.

2) Plug your device in and print - if the drivers are not installed, the simple act will prompt Software Update to ask if you'd like to install the drivers.

3) Download the driver package from the Apple download page here. There is really no reason to need this last step unless you run an Installer or Uninstaller from the CD that came with your device or HP.com and things no longer work.

=====

Question: What devices are HP supporting with the In-OS drivers?

Answer: A full list of supported devices can be found here. This list will also tell you if your multi-function device includes drivers for scan and fax (if your device has fax capabilities) or simply print drivers.

=====

Question: My device isn't listed on the list, does that mean my device is not supported?

Answer: No. HP is working on updating the list of unsupported devices so you can tell if you're device won't be supported. For devices that are not on the support on unsupported list, that doesn't mean they will be supported, it means HP is currently investigating if they can support them. As always HP.com is the best place for you to check. And as I know more, I'll post the updates here.

=====

Question: You have lots of answers, are you here officially supporting HP?

Answer: No. I am here helping out because I know OS transitions can be difficult for some people. Hopefully with the In-OS support for printing, scanning, and faxing this transition will be smoother then past ones. That being said, I have a full time job at HP and I am doing this on my own in addition to that job. And as always, any viewpoints expressed are purely my own and in no way should be considered official statements from HP.

Andrew,

That is good news. I own an HP Laserjet M1005 MFP and there has never been a true Mac OS X 10.5 driver for the printer. The driver that was released for Leopard allows printing but only in standard quality. Quality settings can't be changed (i.e., no draft printing to save ink) and a duplex printing option is non-existent in Mac OS X 10.5.

I was lucky to have the printer before upgrading to Mac OS X 10.5 and I found a way to work around the problem. Before upgrading to Leopard, I saved all of the settings I thought that I might need for the printer in Mac OS X 10.4 and then installed Leopard over my Tiger install. Of course, I've never been able to change any of the settings in Leopard, but at least I have the benefits of draft printing as well as duplex printing.

Please post a note here when (and if) HP develops a full driver for the M1005 printer (and the others on the list). Right now, I can't update to Snow Leopard without HP developing a driver for that printer.

Claire

PS - Where are the settings for the printer saved? Is there any way to transfer the settings from a Tiger installation to a Leopard installation? I have a second, older computer with both Tiger and Leopard partitions, but I, unfortunately, did not do an upgrade for the Leopard install and now I can't use the printer effectively on that computer unless I boot into the Tiger partition. It would be nice if I could somehow copy my Tiger settings to my Leopard partition. Thanks.

Hi,

I have successfully installed the HP drivers on SL for my HP printer/scanner (HP Photosmart C3180). Whenever I scan through a 3rd party app, like Yep or VueScan, it seems the HPScanner app (which appears to be part of the HP scanner driver) crashes. It generates a crash report - which I would like to send to HP and/or Apple. Anyone else seeing this, or know where to send such a report or if there's a fix/solution?

I can scan fine through Preview or ImageCapture - but for some reason there is no multi-page PDF option for the C3180 (Why?) - hence the desire to use Yep or VueScan. BTW, VueScan is the latest release that states SL/10.6 compatibility - so I think it's an actual HP driver problem rather than a generic VueScan/Yep issue.

Hey everyone. I hope anyone that is having trouble with their device checks out my findings over at this thread:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2133501&tstart=0

I struggled for an hour or so before I did what I outlined in my guide, so save some time and try this first! Especially because the HP site itself even says that their current software does NOT support Snow Leopard!

Good luck,

As I've stated in other threads (and even in this one) HP Scan Pro does not work with Snow Leopard. For Snow Leopard we have included scan drivers with the OS. You can scan through the Print queue, the Print & Fax system preference, Preview, and Image Capture. There are even some third party apps that now support scanning with our In-OS drivers.

Now that being said, the In-OS scan drivers at the moment are only for the Ink based multifunction devices (Deskjet, Officejet, Photosmart, PSC, etc). We are working on a replacement for HP Scan Pro as well that will support these devices if you want a stand-alone scan application.

Under Snow Leopard you do not need to use Device Manager, and Device Manager will NOT be included in the full software download that we make available for Snow Leopard.

As for laser based devices, most likely the 10.5 scan solution works under 10.6. We are working on updated installers for these devices, but they are not ready today. We are also looking at adding In-OS scanning support for at least some of these devices, but again its not ready today.

Finally for stand alone scanners (Scanjets's) we will hopefully have something to say next week on schedule and supported devices.

Just trying to help.

Andrew

Question: I don't see my device on that list, does it mean it will never have In-OS scan capabilities?

Answer: No, we are always monitoring this forum and add devices based on user requests. We already have several planned additions to this list.

=====

Question: I see my device on that list, but my device is not listed as having Snow Leopard compatible software, what's up?

Answer: Unfortunately for some devices Scan drivers made it onto the Snow Leopard DVD while print drivers did not. For these devices print drivers will be provided through an Apple Software Update at some point in the future.

Question: You've mentioned a few devices as no longer being supported, do you have a list of these devices?

Answer: Yes. And I've finally been given the OK to post the whole list. So without further ado here is the document that will be posted next week:

HP Products - HP Product Is Not Supported in Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard

Introduction

We are sorry to inform you that there will be no Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) support available for your HP product. Therefore your product will not work with Mac OS X 10.6.

A small set of HP Inkjet printers beyond 5 years old are not supported with Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.

If you are using the Mac OS X 10.6 operating system on your computer, please consider upgrading to a newer HP product that is supported on Mac OS X 10.6. The majority of HP peripherals on the market are supported with Mac OS X 10.6.

There may be conflicts created by installing older pre-Snow Leopard drivers in new Mac OS X 10.6.
Included in Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard are 3rd party Gutenprint drivers that may provide basic print functionality. Gutenprint is a collection of open source printer software, including PostScript Printer Description files (PPDs), that is part of Mac OS X. It was formerly known as Gimp-Print.
When Mac OS X sets up a printer, it tries to locate the printers PPD file. If it can’t find the PPD file, you can use the Gutenprint PPD file.

Please note that Gutenprint drivers are not supported by HP or Apple but may still provide basic print functionality.

For more information about printers supported with Gutenprint drivers, please reference

I just mistakenly installed the 10.5 driver for my laserjet p1505. Trying to add the printer in preferences gives me an error 9672. Now I see in this thread that a driver for this printer will be forthcoming. Is it okay for me to leave the incompatible driver installed and then later overwrite it with the 10.6 driver, or should I try to delete the files, and if I should delete them, which ones are they?

Thanks

I don't think I'm using HP Scan Pro... I'm theoretically using the in-OS drivers (via ImageCapture) with these 3rd party apps, but it's crashing. The crash report is for:
