HP Device FAQ

OK, it looks like I need to get this started if nothing else to head off questions. So that being said without further ado here goes. And I will try to keep this thread updated over the coming days.

=====

Question: Where can I find the latest print/scan/fax drivers for my HP device?

Answer: All of the latest drivers as of this point in time are included on the Mac OS X 10.6 DVD. As of right now you will not find anything newer on HP.com. There are three ways to get the drivers, all relatively simple.

1) Install the OS with your device connected - if the installer sees you have an HP printer it will install drivers for your HP printer.

2) Plug your device in and print - if the drivers are not installed, the simple act will prompt Software Update to ask if you'd like to install the drivers.

3) Download the driver package from the Apple download page here. There is really no reason to need this last step unless you run an Installer or Uninstaller from the CD that came with your device or HP.com and things no longer work.

=====

Question: What devices are HP supporting with the In-OS drivers?

Answer: A full list of supported devices can be found here. This list will also tell you if your multi-function device includes drivers for scan and fax (if your device has fax capabilities) or simply print drivers.

=====

Question: My device isn't listed on the list, does that mean my device is not supported?

Answer: No. HP is working on updating the list of unsupported devices so you can tell if you're device won't be supported. For devices that are not on the support on unsupported list, that doesn't mean they will be supported, it means HP is currently investigating if they can support them. As always HP.com is the best place for you to check. And as I know more, I'll post the updates here.

=====

Question: You have lots of answers, are you here officially supporting HP?

Answer: No. I am here helping out because I know OS transitions can be difficult for some people. Hopefully with the In-OS support for printing, scanning, and faxing this transition will be smoother then past ones. That being said, I have a full time job at HP and I am doing this on my own in addition to that job. And as always, any viewpoints expressed are purely my own and in no way should be considered official statements from HP.

Hello Andrew

I'm afraid I am dipping into the conversation rather late, and you can feel free to direct me to a solution already posted. I just got a new Mac with 10.6.4. I could immediately print fine with my Color Laserjet 2820. But not scan. So I attempted to reinstall all the HP software from the original disk that came with the all-in-one, which I now see from posts was a mistake.
I suspect I need some clues on how to
* uninstall old HP software
* find and install whatever is now needed (if anything) (from where, precisely?)

Specifically, now whenever I log into any account two bad things happen:
* alert window pops up with "Insecure startup item disabled: /Library/Startupitems/HP USB EWS Gateway does not have proper security settings".
* Mysteriously Textedit launches itself and opens a blank document called /Library/Printers/hp/HP Communication

So naturally I want to eliminate these two bad behaviors.

Thanks for any clues. Phil Nelson nelson@physics.upenn.edu

[Continuing previous post about HP 2820 Color Laserjet. I should have been more explicit. I copy the original post below in case they get separated.]

When I say "cannot scan", I mean:
* I plug printer to mac via USB, not over the wireless network.
* Pressing "scan to PC" button makes the printer say "no PC".
* Image Capture finds the HP2820 in its list, but gets stuck with "trying to open scanner session". It's not hung (I can quit it), but he round-and-round please-wait icon just stays on forever.
* The application "HP Scan", which I suppose got installed by the original installer disk, doesn't find the scanner.
* [I didn't try scanning from Preview yet]

Also I should have noted that my HP Color Laserjet 2820 is as it came out of the box, i.e. I did not install any firmware updates on it.

About uninstalling: I could not find any Uninstall option on the original software disks that came with the printer. So I need to know how to uninstall it.

Finally I should say this is a great piece of hardware, has been terrific up until I graduated from MacOSX10.4 last week.

Thanks Phil N

I am not sure if this topic has been discussed because I am trying to print in a hurry and unfortunately don't have the chance right now to go through all 83 pages of replies.

That being said, I own an HP PSC 1315v all-in-one printer and just purchased my MacBook pro in hopes that I could still use my printer. I installed the printer with the CD that came with the product and it acts as if everything installs properly and I am able to print the test pages but when I go to print any other document (word, adobe, internet file, etc) I get an error message that states the printer cannot be found, even though it is plugged in and recognized on the computer. I have uninstalled and reinstalled a number of times which has not solved the problem. I have also gone to HP and downloaded the necessary drivers but nothing seems to happen then either.

Any quick fix solutions? I appreciate any help.

This seems to be the quasi-official thread for hp scan issues. I slogged through the entire thread and followed any applicable instructions that I found, without success.

I have a psc 2510 connected via USB. I uninstalled all hp software, installed the v2.4.1 drivers, and Preferences gives me Scanner Not Selected. I downloaded the v9.7 installer and installed the utilities. HP scan pro starts the scanner working, but then aborts with an error.

Uninstalled all hp software again. Emptied trash. Rebooted. Connected psc 2510. Printer was found and works, but scanner not working. Just for fun reinstalled v2.4.1 drivers. No change.

What did I miss?

Hi there,

Have been following this thread and just wondered if anyone can help.

I have a HP 2550L Laserjet, when I print (using the HP drivers the computer found) it is so slow, 3 - 10 minutes to send to printer depending on the size of the file... It makes no difference if I am connected via USB or wirelessly to it. I read online that switching to using the Generic PCL Driver in the printer set up which fixes the slowness but will only print in black and white, even though the settings say colour...

Any ideas please?

Thanks

Mark

Hoping this thread is still alive...

My C6180 runs wireless and we print from both PC's and Mac. Occasionally, the Mac (10.6.3 iMac) loses its connection to the C6180. The only solution I've found is to use the C6180 control panel to turn the wireless radio off, then on again. Then the Mac connects and prints (and scans) fine. This doesn't happen from the PC.

This started happening after my SL upgrade last year. The printer is at a fixed IP address, as I used to think this was due to IP reassignment after reboots or power outages. That didn't help.

Has anyone else seen this, and any ideas how to figure it out?

Thanks.
