huawei e160 not working in 10.6

I have installed snow leopard and my huawei e160 modem has stopped working. I have been using the vendor software to reinstall. Would it be better to reinstall the driver and setup manually? I need internet access on the go for work.

Disabling the PIN isn't the solution, I am afraid (at least not in every case).
I have a Huawei E169 3G USB modem, which refuses to work since I installed S.L.
No way to have it work with the phone carrier software (Tre Italia, in my case).
I shall try your suggestions about directly configuring the connection via "preferences" ASAP, and let you know if it works for me, too.

My parents just bought a MacBook running 10.6 in the UK. They have an E169 modem from '3' (Tre) in Italy (where they live). The installer on the modem stick fails immediately with an unexpected error every time you run it. However, they also had an E160 stick from the UK. The installer on that worked OK, and by:
- running the 3 Connect software from that E160 stick,
- but with the Italian E169 modem plugged in,
- and by putting in an APN of "tre.it" with a phone no of *99# and leaving the username and password blank it nearly works.

It finds a mobile signal OK and starts to connect but then fails with a PPP authentication error. Added complication is that they are not very tech literate and they are back in Italy now!

I've told them to try putting in a username and password of "null" (as advised here http://www.mactalk.com.au/2009/09/03/thursday-how-to-huawei-mobile-broadband-sno w-leopard/).

Anyone else managed to get the E169 working with tre.it and 10.6 please tell me how you did it! Thanks.
