Multiple Copies of Emails

I have read through (almost) all of the posts and tried everything I can to sort out the problem. I started to receive multiple copies of email - 40,000+ in one day!!! As using for 8 email accounts.

Immediately assumed it was a server problem as would never have dreamed that Apple in their most basic built in app would allow such a bug to escalate to this level and for so long. Spoke to our server guys and IT people, nothing left on servers and webmail no problem so isolated to the mail app. Searched on google and 1000's of people having same problems.

There was no pattern, used the MacBook Air for weeks no problem, then out of nowhere suddenly a problem that is so time consuming. No mention anywhere of even an admission that there is a problem or a date for a likely fix!!! Had to turn off all emails and collect important accounts on Blackberry, thank god I don't have an iphone!

As sc boy says "we don't buy premium computers for this bs" I totally agree the Air cost 4 times other notebooks and I really did not mind at all, until this issue, it's like buying a RR, BMW, Merc etc and having to spend hours under the hood.

It appears that after 12 years of using Macs (still using Desktop G5, 17" Powerbook), recently purchased a MacBook Air for travels I will have to ditch the mail app and go back to using Entourage as I did until 4 years ago, +but once that is set up I will not be re-importing all settings, rules, sigs back to .mail,+

If anyone has any other suggestions I would be eternally grateful as I am not relishing the thought of migrating everything to Entourage, but cannot spend my next few days/weeks/months (or even years?) deleting copies of emails.

I really don't think Apple are as consumer friendly as they once were, usual story, priorities change, I will definitely will buy Macs for myself but not recommend them after this past 10 days 3 die-hard pc user colleagues bought macs in past year as a direct result of my owning macs, referral business is always the best but Apple are past caring I reckon. I know it won't affect Apple global sales but I will feel better at least.

I don't have time to read all these billions of posts through... Maybe a friendly person would tell me if any possible solutions been posted yet?
I have had this problem also after upgrading/reinstalling to snow leopard.

You could go
Mail>Preferences>Accounts>Advanced>Remove copy from server after retrieving a message.

That's not a valid solution for me. I use IMAP accounts. And want the copy to stay on the server.
The weird thing is that it only happens with certain senders..... :-o

Go to Mail>Preferences>Rules and see what kind of rules are set up.

I have setup some rules to move mails from inbox to a subfolder.. That's it.

But it doesn't only happen to the ones under those rules

This thing is driving me crazy!! Any solution yet?

I just signed up for MobileMe and was getting duplicates of all the emails sent to it in Mail. I was not getting duplicates on the me.com web client.

In an attempt to fix it, I tried deleting the account in Mail and was going to remake it, but then I noticed all those emails (to the new account) suddenly showed up in my other/old MobileMe account's inbox. I checked the login settings for the old account and it had the NEW account username in the settings! I deleted the old account and remade the new account and now I'm not getting duplicates.

So my theory is that it can only handle one MobileMe account at a time and if any of you have more than one MobileMe account setup in Mail, try deleting the others and see if it stops the duplicates in your new one. Fixed it for me anyway. Not sure what to do if you need multiple accounts working though. Maybe just forward those emails to another account so you only have to have one MobileMe account in Mail at a time?

Doesn't work...sorry. Tried this but got the same result... duplicated everywhere, swarming around, drowning and suffocating me slowly!!!

I had that same problem with my yahoo pop mail... surprisingly when I log on on to my yahoo mail in safari, the password notification window in the mail app disappears, but only on occasions which is weird.

Here is how I fixed the problem. I ditched Mail and switched to Thunderbird. Since Apple couldn't do the job, I went with someone else who could. I've never had any problems since I made the switch.

OK, I have a business email account setup on my Mac Mini running Snow leopard 10.6.latest.

The Mail account is IMAP, hosted by Rackspace.com, and is NOT an Exchange server, and on the Mac I use the Mail application.

I am also getting the duplicates issue. I came downstairs to my Mac to find 100+ messages, but on my laptop (Thunderbird running on Linux 2.6.31) only had 20-ish.

The extra messages were duplicates of the others, 5 strong.

I do not wish to stop using the Mail application -- I'd like to learn to use Mac applications, as I want to become a Mac / iPhone developer. This post is going on page 25 (or 26) of a thread that has gone on for way too long. I don't expect anyone to find this post, but I expect Apple to realize that this is a major problem that span multiple email-server platforms, hosting environments, account types, and the one common denominator is their Mail application.

This is a problem ! We're not holding it wrong, we're not holding it too tightly -- attend to this!
We want to use Apple applications, but unaddressed bugs will force us to leave them and use something else ! If it happens with one app, it will surely happen with another, and then another, etc -- until we're all back to our previous OS ! For me that's Linux, and I'm warm and snuggly there, but for other that will be Windows. Do you really want to drive people back to Windows ?

Or maybe with the iPad and iOS, you consider OSX already a legacy operating system and just will quietly not support it anymore. Please bear in mind your silence is very loud !

Having the same trouble here. It just started today and it's just the one message from my Mom. I am afraid of what I'll find tomorrow morning! I don't want a workaround or another client. I want a fix! Never had this problem before and I've been using the Mail app since they invented .Mac.

This started yesterday for me. Looking closely at the headers I saw that the duplicates were coming from another email account that I have. Looking through all my settings I eventually logged onto mobleme directly and ***; somehow I had forwarding to that email address turned on!

I had done this myself years ago for a business trip but of course had turned it off when no longer needed. Somehow it got turned on again....
