Multiple Copies of Emails

I installed Snow Leopard yesterday. When I came down this morning I discovered that all of my rogers.com email boxes had 4 copies of each email in each in box. The me.com mailbox did not have this issue. I put them all off-line when it appeared that copy number 5 was starting to download. The box to delete files on the server had ben reinstated for one of the rogers accounts, which had not been set in Leopard. I have used this computer since late May using Leopard without this problem. Any suggestions? I haven't yet called Apple or Rogers.

I am experiencing a similar issue. Two copies of each message addressed to my company Exchange account. After I open and read one copy, the extra one disappears when I attempt to open it. I have not yet found a work around. I am reluctant to trash my mail prefs file because that action requires that I reenter all my account information for six accounts. Deleting the mail caches and rebuilding them did not remedy the problem.

Ernie Stamper,

Please help!

I am new to this community. I have similar problem but it happens with the e mail I compose, not what is in the inbox.

In my trash I see several copies of my email that I composed. Could this be because while I am typing, Mail saves everything automatically every few minutes ? How can I stop this ? How do all these end up inTrash ?

I am using Mt Lion

My symptoms are as Zeaman. It seems that if I REPLY to an email a copy gets created every minute until I complete the mail. I started to reply to a mail but got interupted . In the end the reply took about 22 mins to create by which time I had 22 copies made somehow.

I note reports of this problem going back to 2009. How can something like this persist for 5 years without being fixed?

I was having the same problem with multiple emails being generated to two separate POP accounts. After cheking with our ISP to confirm that the problem was not at their end, I tried Ernie's solution below and so far it appears to have worked. I did copy the old MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded3 file to a backup location before deleting it. Let's hope that this has solved the problem!

I've a number of Macs - this problem is only on MacBook Pro 2011 running El Capitan and Mail v.9.2. Mail is constantly telling me it is downloading tens of thousands or even more than a hundred thousand messages - Activity says Downloading Messages - 'new messages' and just below that Downloading Messages.

They don't seem to be going anywhere - if I quit Mail and reopen - the downloading message starts again.

Mail is set to IMAP - I have one other iMac 10.6.8 set to IMAP - much older one - and it's not happening there. Another more recent iMac running El Capitan and Mail v.9.2 is still set to POP - I need to change that but I'd like to sort this first. My iPhone is on IMAP and that's working fine.

Your problem, hardware or software, may not be exactly the same as that of the original poster of this older thread, and it can be very confusing for everybody if we try to answer more than one question in each thread, which can also result in you applying the wrong advice to your particular problem.

In order for us to give your problem our proper attention to try to solve it, would you kindly start your own thread, describing the trouble you are having in the fullest detail, including completing your details to show what Mac or iDevice you are using, what operating system, and what version of the application in question. Please remember to post in the forum relevant to your hardware or version of OS X. A full list of all the support forums is here:
