Itunes and 64bit Windows 7 RTM

Hi there,

I have recently upgraded my laptop to Windows 7 64bit RTM. I have installed the latest version of iTunes using the x64 installer. I am now not able to sync my ipod shuffle or ipod classic. Essentially the initial erase and sync works ok when connecting to itunes for the first time, however any subsequent synchronisation does not work at all. Itunes detects the presence of the IPOD, it also attempts to sync, but just freezes for a period of time. The IPOD shuffle doesn't generate any errors in itunes, but the IPOD classic generates "The IPOD <name> cannot be synced. The required disk cannot be found".

I have another computer with Windows 7 32bit RTM and I can sync both ipods without a hassle. I suspect the issue is itunes and x64.

I am using itunes 8.2.1.6, and neither computer is running any A/V software.

I have read a number of articles about itunes and 64bit windows, but no article has provided a resolution.

Any help is much appreciated!!

Thanks.

I am experiencing exactly the same problem. I have no troubles with the 32bit version of Windows 7 and iTunes v8.2.1.6 but using Windows 7 64bit and iTunes 64Bit is a completely different story when it comes to syncing.

As you say, the initial sync works, but subsequent syncs fail. Unfortunately since iTunes disconnects the iPod after the initial sync, I can't make any changes to prevent it from disconnecting as it requires a sync to save the new settings.

Hopefully Apple will fix this soon.

Having the same problem with 64-bit Vista. There was a problem with using the Windows hardware manager that was fixed in SP2, but I think that only applied to 32-bit Vista. I applied a MS hotfix for this problem, but my iTouch is stuck in recovery mode and get an "error 6" when trying to restore. At this point cannot recover using other computers either.

Everything was working fine with the device until the last sync, then got the 'cannot read device error'.

Any info appreciated.

I am having the same problem with Windows 7 64bit and my iPod 4th generation. I am able to connect to my iPod and it restores it then when it tries to sync I get the required disc is not available. I am running Itunes 8.2.1.6 My Iphone 3gs works perfectly but now I basically have a paper weight of an iPod and am hoping that someone out there can help. My iPod does show up in Windows 7 as being there. I am a IT Specialist so I am not inept and could pull up technical information if needed to assist. Any help out there would be greatly appreciated!

OK, made some progress. First, appears there's definitely some issue with Vista USB handling and the iPod. Apparently was fixed in Vista SP2. For some reason, my updater didn't install it, so I had to download from ms technet. Then (after a couple of failed restore attemps) I deleted the Apple *.ispw file from (user name)=>AppData=>Roaming=>Apple Computer=>iTunes=>iPod Software Updates folder. These are hidden folders, of course, so you have to 'view hidden folders' to see them.

Once this was done, I was able to restore the iPod. Hooray! Then I even was able to start syncing...for about 3 minutes before it craps out with 'cannot read or write to disk' and it craps out.

At least some of the music did come over and I've got a $400 mp3 player that holds 500MB of music. It may offer some hope if someone can figure out what function is causing this 'cannot read/write' error to get thrown when the device clearly works.

Not that it helps but I have had the exact same experience. Have a little 1gig shuffle and it saw it fine and wiped it for the new install. Now it just freezes when I try to put anything on it. I uninstalled iTunes and I can use it still as a mem stick, copies data fine over usb. Thing is I ran Vista 64 for sometime and never had this problem.

This may sound overly simplistic but before you spend a large amount of time troubleshooting this try a different cable. Here is why I'm suggesting such a simple solution in particular for Windows 7. Prior to updating to my primary laptop Windows 7 RC, I was able to successfully sync over 10gb of music to my Iphone. After upgrading I was able to backup, load software and sync with outlook but UNABLE to sync more than 2 songs without getting a disk timeout error. After trouble shooting Windows 7 64bit for over a week with multiple versions of ITunes across 2 different Dell laptops I got frustrated and out of desperation decided to replaced my Apple usb cable with a Griffin USB cable. Guess what, the new cable worked like a champ on both laptops with Windows7. I am a bit baffled but ultimately rule 25 says "never argue with success". Keep in mind the "bad" cable works like a champ on XP but refused to work with Windows 7 64bit. I’m NOT suggesting this is particular to Apple USB cable as any cable can ultimately go bad but before you spend lots of time chasing this try going the simple route by trying another cable.

Has anyone else found a solution?

I've got an 80 gig IPOD classic and just installed Windows 7 64-bit. After a few gigs of "syncing" I receive the (-64) error. If I keep hitting the sync button, I get a little bit more data transfer, then eventually get the "...Cannot write to disc error..."

I will a new cabe as Helo Head mentioned above. Some other searching has revealed some well-known USB issues with Windows 7, so this sounds like it may be a possibility, but not a "real" fix.

Anyobdy else?

I just upgraded to windows 7 and uninstalled itunes before the upgrade. When I reinstalled itunes it did not recognize my library. So I did a complete uninstall and left my library files where they were. Then I used the windows 64 bit installer from here:

http://support.apple.com/kb/DL925

If you're like me you installed in your admin account. When it asks if you want to start itunes after install say ok. I first had a problem with it not recognizing my library but after a reinstalled I had no problems.

Good luck

I had the same problem with Vista on my new computer and now Win 7 32 bit which I finally got the upgrade disk for. Last time I tried and tried and failed, so restored and got the itouch working on my old PC running XP. Last night was the first time I tried to sync using the new computer (Win 7 32 bit) and it does the same as Vista did, won't recognise it, then can't restore either. It's infuriating as I have new music on the PC and the latest itouch software but I can't get it onto the itouch! I could copy it over to the old computer but I'm loath to do that as ultimately I want to run the itouch from the new computer (the old is a backup / for the kids computer).

About to try restoring the itouch on my work laptop running XP now - hope it works as it's as dead as a dodo right now!

What else can I do?
