Itunes and 64bit Windows 7 RTM

Hi there,

I have recently upgraded my laptop to Windows 7 64bit RTM. I have installed the latest version of iTunes using the x64 installer. I am now not able to sync my ipod shuffle or ipod classic. Essentially the initial erase and sync works ok when connecting to itunes for the first time, however any subsequent synchronisation does not work at all. Itunes detects the presence of the IPOD, it also attempts to sync, but just freezes for a period of time. The IPOD shuffle doesn't generate any errors in itunes, but the IPOD classic generates "The IPOD <name> cannot be synced. The required disk cannot be found".

I have another computer with Windows 7 32bit RTM and I can sync both ipods without a hassle. I suspect the issue is itunes and x64.

I am using itunes 8.2.1.6, and neither computer is running any A/V software.

I have read a number of articles about itunes and 64bit windows, but no article has provided a resolution.

Any help is much appreciated!!

Thanks.

I bought a computer a year ago, came with windows vista home premium. Since then I have been syncing 2-ipods and 1-iphone to it.

I upgraded to Windows 7 64bit, and haven't been able to sync any of them since. When I connect it, it says that the files are unaccessable. I've tried rebooting the ipod, no go... done a clean reformat... still no go... used same chords that i did on vista.. so should work...

Conclusion, itunes and windows need to get their crap together. Having a Legit collection of 40k songs would cost about $40,000 ... and not being able to sync to it...
Priceless

Hi guys,

I am having (among other things) exactly the same trouble. It says (translate from German) "The iPod [name] cannot be synchronized. The required file was not found".

After trying out many suggestions from the web, I still keep receiving Apple-like error messages that do anything but give a clue to what's really the problem. This really ****** me off since it would be quite easy to just copy the files I need from the iPod to the PC and use an XP 32bit machine to sync - but as we know, Apple made this impossible...

However there is one thing that helped a few other people:

on fast PCs with 64bit systems and much RAM, MS Windowses USB drivers do not slow down communication for some reason. This is a known bug and raises problems with many other USB devices as well.

There is a workaround as follows, which might help you:

1. Go to Start -> Programs -> Accessoires.

2. Right-click "Command Prompt" and select "Run as administrator".

3. The command box should open now.

4. Type the following command:

+bcdedit /set truncatememory 0x80000000+

5. Reboot your PC.

6. When going to Control Panel -> System it should display that your system has a maximum of 2GB of RAM.

7. Reset your iPod to factory defaults.

8. Launch iTunes and sync, for many people it did now.

9. Run command prompt as an administrator again.

10. Type the following command:

+bcdedit /deletevalue truncatememory+

11. Reboot your PC again.

12. Everything is back to normal.

I know this is a rather nasty workaround and it did not solve my problems either, but until the USB driver problem is fixed, nothing else will help.

Here's the workaround that worked for us:

1) Change iTunes to run in Windows XP (service pack 3) compatibility mode
a) Right click the iTunes shortcut
b) Click the "Compatibility Tab"
c) And check "Run this program in compatibility......" and select Windows XP (SP3)

2) Run iTunes (accept the warnings about compatibility mode and running as admin), if necessary, reset the phone to factory settings.

While not perfect this does seem to work and our iPhone now syncs and is recognised reliably when plugged in.

Tim.

This fixed it for me. Run in vista compatability mode. there are a few steps here you may not need but I was trying a bunch of stuff and that how it worked. My Ipod shuffle wouldn't respond when I pluged it in after the upgrade to windows 7.

1. ctrl altdelete end process on ituneshelper.exe - I don't think this is nessary
2. right mouse click Itunes - Properties
3. compatability tab - check run in compatabilty mode - I used vista
4. plug in you Ipod - drivers should load
5. restart computer - may not be nessary
6. launch Itunes if it says something about compatibility mode just click OK
7. at this point it should work, close Itunes
8. turn off compatibility mode in the same fashion you turned it on

Hope this works for you it did for me.
