The application Finder.app can't be opened.

I upgraded to Snow Leopard yesterday, and I'm having a lot of troubles, Finde, Time Machine and Disk Utility being the most annoying of them. I don't really know which one of them is making the others unstable / crash but well that's starting to be very irritating, now when I try to start the Finder I get this :

*The application Finder.app can't be opened.*
-10810

Restarting the Computer ( Mac Book Pro Uni ) usually fix that, but it's the second time that it's crashing a 220 go files package copy. I ended up doing it with rsync, the copy is still going on ( it will take a long time ) but I'm left with a Zombie Computer where I can't open a finder, and every Application that use it to open some file is crashing itself.

Is there a way to manually relaunch it ( I don't want to reboot, my computer is stuck backing up a lot of files ) ? I tried Sudo Launch the Finder from /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/MacOS with no luck, any help would be appreciated.

I am having the same problem. I am trying to copy large files from external hard drive. It seems like when I get over about 150 MB is when I have the problem. Like everyone else, this is frustrating because I have to restart so much. In addition, while I surmise the issue is with files over a certain size, I do not really know.

1st, I am having this issue
2nd, happens most often after I am _waking from sleep_
3rd, Finder will hang when doing some process : copying a file, transferring a file, itunes accessing my files - *all on my external drive* (WD Passport 500gb)
4th, I "Force Quit" and relaunch the finder.... it does nothing... it just hangs there, desktop disappears etc
5th, I try clicking on the Finder icon to Relaunch, and get the +"finder can't be opened -10810"+ message
6th, after some time... I just decided to UNPLUG MY USB DRIVE ... and instantly, the Finder desktop reappeared

I only read the first 3 pages and pages 11 and 12 ... it seems like there is a common trend of having this issue in association +with some external drive+... +can others confirm this?+

can anyone offer suggestions as how to approach this? thanks

Macbook Air 2.13, SSD (rev c)
Connected to LED Apple Cinema Display
External WD Passport 500gb attached
CLEAN Snow Leopard Install (with only Adobe Photoshop CS4 and MSoft Office 2008 installed)
Connection via Ethernet cable direct to Time Capsule (No Airport WiFi)
Time Macine NOT being used

Mine is a Western Digital, alleged 750 GB (GUID Partition Table, WD My Book Media, FireWire 800)

Under Leopard, I used to observe time machine hanging indefinitely a couple times a week, until I unplugged the drive. Never saw Finder problems.

Anyone know of anything useful at the Western Digital site? +(I admit that I read only a subset of this thread, apologies if that's already answered.)+

Glad that worked for you, I am just realizing that this problem is a little more widespread, I am surprised I had not encountered it on Leopard. I do believe this is a fundamental finder *disk management issue* and affects BOTH External _as wells as_ Internal Hard Drives etc

I have not tested this long enough to comment, hopefully this will be of some help to someone

*+PS: I DID NOT INSTALL the "Performance Update" because it caused havoc with my finder operations and freezing etc...so I did a CLEAN INSTALL OF SNOW LEOPARD..... can anyone comment whether or not they installed the "Performance Update" ?+*

I had the same error "10810" when clicking Finder BUT:

1. I didn't have attached any external drive, cd's, dvd's, pendrives or anything else. The only close thing would be the BOOTCAMP partition, but i wasn't even using this when it crashed.

2. It happened a few minutes after back from sleep

3. I had to force restart the computer and when started again, i look into the console and I found coreservicesd crashed. It seem that was the origin of the problem in my case. A full log of the crash and another person that apparently had the exact same problem is on this other topic: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10180126

The solution of "detaching the device" doesn't apply in this case because, as i said, i didn't have any device attached, besides the bootcamp partition...

The application Finder.app can't be opened.
