Apple Remote Play/Pause button

Since installing Snow Leopard I've noticed that the Play/Pause button opens iTunes automatically, this is annoying, I don't use iTunes I prefer to use an app called Ecoute, it's less of a memory-hog, but tis app is pointless if I open itUnes very time I want to pause a song!! Does anybody know how to disable this feature?

P.s: I've found that the Play/Pause button on my keyboard (F8) does the same thing grr! this is annoying!

It's the same for me. Very annoying! I usally use Apple Remote to control EyeTV, but every time I press the play/pause button, iTunes opens in the backgound and I hear EyeTV and iTunes at the same time. I would be glad to hear a solution.

There are several other users in various forums reporting similar issues related to apple remote and SL: it looks like apple removed the "exclusive mode" for the IR remote and all apps receive at the same time IR commands. I hope this is a bug, otherwise apple remote becomes pretty useless.
I'm quite surprised a bug like this made its way down to the golden master release...

Is there anyway that copying files (.kexts/.strings) from 10.5 could remedy this...I've been googling this problem and it appears the Remote is contolled via the HID Interface drivers...

I am having this issue also. Hopefully they will get it fixed soon.

I was trying to watch a video with VLC and soon as I hit the pause then play button there was music playing in the background with the video.

I sent feedback for OS X and also iTunes (not sure which one is at fault) , hopefully apple is paying attention. 🙂

Same problem for me!
I use Elgato EyeTV, when pressing play/pause it pause the tv program AND starts Itunes, when pressing Up an Down it change the volume for both system and EyeTV.
Menu button opens EyeTV menu AND Front Row.

I bought Apple Remote for EyeTV and it is impossible to use with it...

Just noticed this while playing Hulu Desktop App and using the Apple Remote. Starts Playing iTunes library after hitting one of the keys on remote. Would be nice if the System Preferences had settings for Apple Remote like Keyboard and Mouse.

Updated to 10.6.1 and iTunes 9 and while Front Row is ok it still appears that the Apple Remote opens iTunes even when another app using it is in the foreground.

Same problem and its really VERY ANNOYING. I use Logic 8 to record my songs with. Being a solo artist the remote was a godsend as I could go to the microphone a start recording with logic using the remote without rushing backwards and forwards from the mic to the desk.... Now I CANT. PLEASE FIX THIS!!!

I'm having the same problem with this SL bug. If for some reason this Apple remote play/pause for iTunes has been added as some sort of feature, a way to disable it should be provided. Please fix this soon.
