Snow Leopard Doesn't Recognize Canon PowerShot G10

Anyone else have a Canon PowerShot G10 camera? Under Leopard (and Windows any-version) it plugging the USB cable in and putting the camera in view mode initiated an auto-sync. Snow Leopard, however, ignores it entirely.

Others with the same problem?

Macbook Pro 2.8 GHz / 4 GB, Mac OS X (10.6)

I had the same problem. Disconnect the camera from the computer. Open up iPhoto preferences and in the general tab go to connecting camera opens and chose Image Capture as your default. Close down iPhoto. Attach the camera set it on display and turn it on. Image Capture should pop up with a list of all the photos on the memory card.

Canon will update their sofware for Snow Leopard one of these days.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I spent the good part of today trying to figure out what was wrong with either my husband's new camera or his usb ports! All of it worked on a macbook pro that still does not have Snow Leopard. It took me a while then to realize it was a Snow Leopard issue. It took getting to your answer to get it to work, and work it does.

One addition: reboot the whole computer after changing the settings; that is, it still won't see the camera/photos till the computer is rebooted

Problem solved. I installed the Canon CD utilities that came with the camera, downloaded latest updater, and restarted. The canon apps surprisingly do not work with 10.6.2, but somehow enabled Image Capture to download the SND files. Go figure, but happy for the way it ended up.

Hmm, so I installed Snow Leopard over the weekend and found this thread when I discovered that my SD990IS was broken. I installed the most recent drivers (ImageBrowser 6.4.1 Updater) and had the same problem, I get the error "failed to initialize program."

I called Canon's technical support and they acknowledge that their software is not Snow Leopard compatible and they don't know when an update will be released. I asked what was the best way to find out when that happens, and she said to just keep checking back on the website. Great.

She said for now the workaround is to just use iPhoto to download images. Have not tried that yet, I just used my PC for this batch of images.

Well for the second time this week this Board answered a question before I had thought to ask it. Snow Leopard would not connect my Canon PowerShot A 710 by opening a "Camera Window" screen. I could manually open it but it used to open automatically upon connection. Thanks to the reminder in this thread, I remembered it had to be set in iPhoto General Prefs which I had done before. Now the only problem is that iPhoto only recognizes itself as software to use or nothing as the software to use when the camera is connected. My MacBook will list Camera Window as an app to use on camera connection but my iMac doesn't give me an option other than iPhoto. Any ideas?

I have a Canon PowerShot SX100 IS. I contacted Canon about the issue of Snow not detecting my camera. Here is the reply I got from them.

"We are still working on updates for our software for Snow Leopard.
Unfortunately, you will not be able to download pictures using our
software. The software will install, however, CameraWindow will not
detect your camera. When the updates are released CameraWindow will
detect the camera, and the updates can be downloaded from
www.powershot.com .

Until the updates are available you should be able download pictures
using iPhoto."

Hi All

I have a Canon Powershot G9 and have also experienced the same 'communication' problem with my camera after upgrading to OS X (10.6.2). I have been searching for months for a solution and found it here ...

http://www.macintouch.com/readerreports/snowleopard/

The new Canon software is a complete rewrite PLUS some enhancements.

Like everyone else I reverted to using iPhoto following the upgrade but now CameraWindow DC takes control whenever I attach my camera, just as it used to. The new ImageBrowser works fine too.

Regards

Phil
