HP Laserjet 4 M plus

I have the laserjet 4m plus plugged into the time capsule via a CAT5 cord and it worked fine in 10.5. Now I do not see the printer when I go to set it up. Does anyone know how to retrieve the IP address from the printer? Also which driver should I use? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

i Mac, Mac OS X (10.6)

I wish I could find a user guide on-line. But you'll have to find out the network address range that your router is set for (like 192.168.1.x) and netmask (like 255.255.255.0). Then you'll have to configure the printer with their dopey menu under the MIO Settings to set a static IP address in that range (use the high-end of the range), netmask, etc. I wish I could tell you more, but that would take a book. Maybe I can find a web site that describes how to do it.

OK, here is what you do (this suggestion based on how I got my HP 6MP printer, which was also an appletalk printer, going, hope it works for you!)
Got to System Preferences> Print & Fax
At the bottom of the Printers window, click the + sign to add the printer
When the add printer window comes up the Protocol should be Line Printer Daemon - LPD
Enter your IP address in the address box
Give the printer a name
On the print using drop down menu at the bottom click on Select Printer Software
In the window that opens, find your printer (I see the HP 4 printer in the list)
Click OK and then click add
Should be there (I hope).
Hope this works for you!
Good luck!

Hi - I have an HP 5M printer, but it sounds very similar to the problems I was having when I first upgraded to Snow Leopard last week, so I'll tell you what worked for me.

My HP 5M was originally connected in OS 10.5 using AppleTalk. Now that that is gone, you need to enable TCP/IP on your printer instead of AppleTalk for network printing.

On your Mac, go to system preferences, network settings, and get the I.P. for that machine. It is probably 192.168.1.xxx.

Pick a number between 2 and 254 and use that for the last number in the I.P.

I used picked the number 20, so for my example above, I would use 192.168.1.20.

On the front of your printer panel somewhere there is a menu you can scroll through. (HP MI0 Menu)

My settings are as follows:

Novell: OFF
DLC/LLC: OFF
TCP/IP: ON (this is the important one)
ETALK: ON

Then it will ask you if you want to configure TCP/IP, which you do want to do. Settings for that:

BOOTP: NO
IP BYTE: 1=192
IP BYTE: 2=168
IP BYTE: 3=0
IP BYTE: 4=20

(As you can see from the numbers in the 4 IP BYTE listings, they correspond to the IP address numbers of whatever your router is, with the last digit being the "new" number you picked to access your printer).

There are other menu settings on your printer in that same setting location (SM BYTE, etc), all which are 0 and you don't need to alter them at all.

Then go to your System Preferences, Print & Fax, click the + to add printer, click IP, Protocol: HP Jetdirect, then type in the IP address that you specified on your printer (192.168.1.20) and click Add. You may have to specify your printer in the "Print Using" space if it doesn't automatically assign you as Laserjet 4M Plus.

Let me know how you make out. It can be frustrating if you've never had to do it before, I know it was for me.

Thanks mate - that was just the info I needed to fix the same problem with my old LaserJet 4M.

It's a tedious process, but it works. I don't know whether it's important, but I did a cold reset first (start up while holding down the On Line button), to be sure of starting with default settings, before getting to work on the control panel. In my case, the relevant driver to set in prefs seems to be LaserJet Plus (at any rate, it seems to work).

Cheers -

I have spent numerous hours on trying to get my old trusty HP LAserjet 4MP to print with 10.6.1. My printer is attached via Ethernet to my Linksys router. I've tried locating the IP address as was described in a post...got the printer to spit out a self test page. But it came up with an IP address of 192.0.0.192. This appears to be wrong. I cannot ping it using this address in my browser. Can someone please help me??? I've stumped two Apple techs, who were nice enough to spend a few hours on the phone with me, and HP wants nothing to do with supporting this printer on the phone. They just refer you to their useless website.

Theresa,

Given your 4MP obviously has a JetDirect card in it for you to even get an IP address out of it, what you need to do is a cold reset. It was a bit hard finding any documentation on this given the age of your printer, but I think all you have to do is turn the power off, hold down the GO or Online button, and turn the printer back on while holding the button.

Then you should check the IP address again. With any luck it will grab a new IP address from the DHCP server and off you go. If not, its going to get a whole lot trickier.

Just trying to help.

I tried the cold reset, and it generated the same IP address as before. I had an IT person help me with it over the phone, and it is working now. In a nutshell, you have to go into the printer's settings on the printer control panel and manually set the IP address. I will describe the process, best I can, below. But remember that everyone's IP address will be different. If nothing else, this may help people in getting into the printer settings, which is impossible to find on the HP site:
1-Take printer offline
2-Hit MENU button until you get to "MIO Menu"
3-Hit CONTINUE, scroll to CFG TCP/IP= YES (hit +/- key to change from NO to YES), hit ENTER button
4-Hit CONTINUE, scroll to IP Byte; Change to 1=192, 2=168, 3=1, 4=10 (you need to press +/- button to get to these numbers)
5-Hit CONTINUE, scroll to SM Byte; Change to 1-255, 2=255, 3=255, 4=0
6-Hit CONTINUE, scroll to LG Byte; Leave all at 1=0,2=0,3=0,4=0
7-Hit CONTINUE, scroll to GW Byte; Change to 1=192, 2=168, 3=1, 4=1
8-Hold Shift button down & hit continue

And that should do it. You can verify it by printing a new test menu.

You then, of course, need to go to your Sys Prefs > Print & Fax > Add a printer > Line Printer Daemon: Address 192.168.1.10 > Change the name to HP Laserjet 4MP (or whatever you like) > print using find the HP driver, which is in the list

And that is it! I hope this helps someone out there, and that it saves someone the time effort and money I spent on a tech call! Good luck.
