HP PhotoSmart C4480 In Snow Leopard

My HP all in one PhotoSmart C4480 prints perfectly fine in Snow Leopard but when I try to scan from the printer it says "Scan Error. Try from computer or see documentation". Then when I try to scan from the computer the app fails to open. I've reinstalled the drivers from the HP website and from the included CD in the printer box but it still does the same thing. My scanner worked perfectly fine in Leopard but not in Snow Leopard. I can usually fix this stuff but I think the drivers are not compatible with Snow Leopard. Also when I try to scan from the system preferences menu it ends up saying no scanner selected. Please tell me if you are having the same problem with your HP all in one and if you found a solution. Thanks.

My HP Photosmart C4680 was doing something similar. The old drivers don't work in SL. If you were using the HP Device Manager, that no longer works. You scan now from the application Image Capture. The problem I had was when I would open Image Capture it told me there wasn't a scanner or camera connected and no device was listed on the left side. I inserted my SL disk. Opened up the Optional Install. Went through the license etc. then selected to install Printer Support. Eject Disk. Restart computer. Open Image Capture. Device was there.

The problem I now have is about every 12-24 hours the device goes missing again.

Obviously not a permanent fix, but at least a temporary work around.

Hello Bryan

Welcome to Apple discussions.

HP drivers are being updated frequently.

However, I suggest you uninstall all of the HP drivers that you have added. Then delete the printer, restart the computer, and then add it back in. I had a weird problem with my DeskJet 6940 and that fixed it. What happened was that OS X found the latest driver after i deleted the printer.

Brain,

HP's documentation clearly says to NOT install any of the old software.
Use only the drivers that came with Snow Leopard.

Remove all of your HP software as mentioned and use the newer drivers with SL.
Your printer is listed as functional for Printing, Scanning, and Faxing...

Joseph Kriz,

I listened to you and did what you told me to which was "Remove all of your HP software".
I did that with the HP uninstaller and when I try to add the printer through System Preferences it says "Some of the software for this printer is missing." and now I cant even print to it. I will reinstall the HP software until I can figure this out some other way.

Bryan,

At the point where it said some software is missing, did you check try to see if Software Update had any HP printer updates available?

The software that came with your printer is out of date and should not be used and should be deleted.
If anything is missing, then Software Update or installing the HP drivers from the Snow Leopard disk should make your printer work again.

My printer prints but is not supported at this time for scanning or faxing until new drivers are released.
Your printer says it is supported for printing, scanning and faxing.

And just for the record, that is an HP document that I followed which works for most people.

I have the same problem with the HP Photosmart C7280. It prints, but no scanning. Image Capture doesn't recognize the scanner either. This is clearly an issue which needs to be addressed by Apple or HP (whoever comes first), but will take time. So for the time being, I'm resigned to not being able to use my scanner... sigh.
Not to mention the trouble I have getting my camera to show up in iPhoto. I wish Apple had thought of these issues before releasing 10.6 (but to be fair, I'm not sure if that's at all possible).

Specifically, HP Scan Pro and Device Manager that came with your All-in-One are not supported in Snow Leopard. Also not supported at the moment is button support, but that will be very shortly (I expect less then a week, but it could be a little bit more).

That being said, you should be able to Scan from the Printer browser (the thing that shows up in the dock), the Print & Fax System Preference, Preview, and Image Capture. Support for all of these applications (and several third party ones) are include with Snow Leopard.

As for importing images into iPhoto, you'll notice from my FAQ entry that if you are trying to import from a card slot on a network device, iPhoto/Image Capture/etc. under Snow Leopard do not support this. The work around is to mount the memory card on your desktop and use the "Import to Library..." option under the file menu. Other apps should have a similar option.

Just trying to help.

Andrew
