HP PhotoSmart C4480 In Snow Leopard

My HP all in one PhotoSmart C4480 prints perfectly fine in Snow Leopard but when I try to scan from the printer it says "Scan Error. Try from computer or see documentation". Then when I try to scan from the computer the app fails to open. I've reinstalled the drivers from the HP website and from the included CD in the printer box but it still does the same thing. My scanner worked perfectly fine in Leopard but not in Snow Leopard. I can usually fix this stuff but I think the drivers are not compatible with Snow Leopard. Also when I try to scan from the system preferences menu it ends up saying no scanner selected. Please tell me if you are having the same problem with your HP all in one and if you found a solution. Thanks.

Bryan,

That's what we all have been trying to tell you here.

The drivers directly from your old software or directly from HP are no longer working like you finally found out.

You needed the drivers from the Snow Leopard disk or download the new ones from Apple like you finally did. The drivers you downloaded are the same ones on the Snow Leopard disk as stated on the page you linked to.

About HP Printer Drivers for Mac OS X v10.6
This download includes HP printing software that shipped with Mac OS X v10.6 (Snow Leopard).

Glad you finally got it working.

I hate to involve myself in such a heated topic...

But I am having the same issues as Bryan. I did the steps that were posted by Andrew and still no luck. I've downloaded the HP print drivers and everything... No matter how I go about scanning I always get an error of some kind.

Hoping that someone has an answer or some sort of software in which I can scan to.

Thanks!

Bryan W.: thanks! I hope you get an answer... My camera is a Nikon S220 and it only works when I open Image Capture which is tedious because it loads all my photos first, not just the new ones. If I plug in my camera iPhoto no longer automatically opens and uploads my newest photos. It never shows up, only occasionally when I also engage Image Capture. That's the weird part.
Everyone I know with a Mac and a SL upgrade has encountered problems (mainly printer/scanner and/or camera related, but also other problems I don't have). I can't believe Apple let this happen! They have been so reliable and now I feel almost like I'm using a PC with Windows.... sigh.
Can't wait to hear back from you! Good luck with your inquiry!

Just read that you got your printer/scanner working, great! Unfortunately, I haven't been able to resolve my scanning issues, although I did follow Andrew's advice above. When i try and scan from Preview, only certain parts of the page are actually scanned, not the whole page. Very strange. But at least my scanner does seem to be recognized somewhere in the system... Not so with Image Capture or any other route to get the scanner going. At this point, I'm just going to wait for the update and hope for the best. :-/

Thanks Andrew! Once I read thru a couple of threads re this issue with other printers, I disconnected my wirelessly connected C7280 and connected it to my iMac via USB (although I have no more ports to give and would rather have it connected via wireless router). Now the scanner shows up occasionally ⚠ under the printer queue and I can see it in Preview and Image Capture as well. Scanning properly on the other hand, is a different case... What used to be a very simple task has become arduous as only bits and pieces of a page are scanned and it takes a while to figure out how to drag the dotted lines to get the whole page scanned (and that only works half the time, too).
I hope you guys have this figured out soon. I was so happy with the way things functioned printer and scanner-wise before SL... but I trust HP will catch up--sooner or later.

Thank you, Bryan. Alas, nothing seems to work. Preview, Image Capture, and the Print&Fax Preferences all recognize my HP PSC 2355 but all produce the same message:

Failed to open a session on the device.

I am very disappointed and will probably resort to re-building my machine with Mac OS 10.5 if this problem is not solved quickly.

I also have AppleCare - So far, no one seems to be able to help. This needs immediate attention. Thank you.

Before installing Snow Leopard, printing & scanning on my HP c4480 was flawless. After installing Snow Leopard my problems began. Every time I try to scan I get a message "An error occurred". Apple and I tried every trouble shooting method imaginable with no results. The secret word here is....."INCOMPATIBILITY". I contacted HP and it seems they're working on it....I think. Apple's hands are tied and we're both at the mercy of HP. I suppose patience is key here. But...if anyone has solved this problem, PLEASE post.

OK, as has been pointed out the software that came on the CD with your device does not work under Snow Leopard and is not supported under Snow Leopard. Snow Leopard does include Print and Scan drivers for you device in the OS, and if you need functionality provided by HP Scan, there is a full Snow Leopard installer for all of the software components available from [hp.com|http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=o j-74785-1&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&os=219&product=3418705].

So if you are having troubles with Scanning from Image Capture, Preview, or your Printer browser we can help. Likewise if you are having trouble with the full download that contains HP Scan we can help. As for HP Scan Pro, it is not supported. But really I need more information about what you are trying to do other then an error occurred while scanning.

Just trying to help.

Andrew
